You'll have to wait a little longer for Insomniac Games' lovable Lombax and snide sidekick to appear on the PlayStation 4, as Ratchet & Clank's hotly anticipated new-gen reboot has been pushed into Spring 2016. The news follows confirmation of the movie's release date, which is set to premiere in US theatres from 29th April, 2016. The flick's distribution is being handled by Focus Features, which has also worked on major releases like The Box Trolls.
The most bizarre thing about all of this is that, despite it being officially announced over a year ago, we still haven't seen the Burbank-based developer's latest in action. This, according to the studio, will change in due time – with the title likely to get some airtime during the platform holder's E3 press conference next month. It promises that, in the meantime, it's applying a hearty helping of polish to the final product – we suspect that it's going to look good.
"While you might have to wait a bit longer than expected, rest assured that we're using the time wisely to further polish the game to a spit-shine level, with dazzling shader response, awe-inspiring effects, velvety smooth animations, and spectacular new gameplay segments," chief brand officer Ryan Schneider wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "Really, we can't wait to show it to you."
It makes sense to hold the game back, of course, as it sounds like Sony's betting big on the movie. In case you missed the casting news earlier today, the likes of Sly Stallone, Rosario Dawson, and Paul Giamatti will be lending their larynxes to the flick's extended cast. Franchise fans needn't worry, though, as all of the series' usual actors will be returning to voice the animated adaptation's core characters. This all means that the film could actually end up being good.
Just let that last sentence sink in for a second.

Disappointing delay, but I'm weirdly positive about this whole initiative. I think the movie has massive potential, and if it takes off, well, a great video game "tie-in" would be good business, too.
There's a lot of potential here.
So Sony literally has f*ck all now for the holidays for the third year in a row. I don't care what anybody says, that's plain ridiculous.
You want first and second party exclusives, best buy a Wii U or Xbox One at this point........
Sony better have something for E3, otherwise it's going to be akin to Tearaway: Unfolded VS Halo 5, Forza 6, and Tomb Raider.
To be honest, that's a bit dramatic for sure, but reguardless I bought a PS4 so I could get all of those great exclusives that Sony showcased last gen. I'm somewhat underwhelmed so far.
As far as Sony going all out in making movie spin off's of it's video game IP's,........I'm not exactly overwhelmed with optimism when it comes to shoe horning a game into a seperate media type, nor do I really care.....at all, to watch any of these.
So glad the game was delayed. I mean, I would have preferred if the movie and game could launch correctly and on time, but if it was on time then it sure as hell wouldn't be done correctly so far.
That said, I still have No Man's Sky (considering it doesn't get delayed), Doom 4, Tearaway, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 and maybe Battlefront to occupy 2015 for me. Hopefully Sony announces some exclusives for this holiday at E3, because Until Dawn just isn't gonna cut it.
@sub12
Yup, I don't have a Wii U, but I'm excited for Xbox One's holiday lineup of exclusives.
Ugh......Until Dawn......it may be a semi-port, but Tearaway: Unfolded is much more exciting to me.
@Gamer83
Yup, the PS4 is still my prefered console, but right now I'm having more fun with Forza Horizon 2 on the XB1 than any PS4 exclusive that wasn't a last-gen port (hint).
@get2sammyb Same here mate. I'd rather have the game delayed and be awesome, then rushed and have bugs/glitches etc.
@darkhairwarrior I'm looking forward to these upcoming PS4 games myself, despite not planning on owning a PS4 until Fall 2016.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Batman: Arkham Knight
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition
LEGO Jurassic World
God of War III: Remastered
Mad Max
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
@sub12
A lot of people are saying Until Dawn has a 'so bad it's good' vibe. To me it just looks bad. I didn't play Tearaway on Vita so I'm semi hyped for it but I really wish Gravity Rush was the Vita to PS4 port they'd be push. I thought GR was an excellent game and would love to see it get new life on a system people actually like.
To be honest there are so many 3rd party games I want for my PS4 this really does not bother me. I would rather they took the extra time to deliver a finished product and it is better for me as I cannot afford to get every game I want as it is, so it is just one less on the market for me to choose from right now.
@ToddlerNaruto
Nice selection, they are pretty much all of the games I am wanting for my PS4 too!
@Mrskinner I have more PS4 games on my wish list, but they don't have exact release dates yet (MM/DD/YYYY), so I didn't include them.
TBA:
Final Fantasy XV
Hellblade
Just Cause 3
Kingdom Hearts III
LEGO Marvel's Avengers
Mass Effect 4
Persona 5
Ratchet & Clank (2016 reboot)
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness
Tom Clancy's The Division
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Until Dawn
@ToddlerNaruto Loads of great games there. For me its MGS, FF 15 and Persona 5. I understand the complaints but since owning the PS4 I have never been short of things to play. That said I dont have much free time. @Mrskinner same here its hard to keep up, Ive missed Bloodbourne and gonna miss the witcher so I can catch up with my backlog and get ready for MGS.
No big deal, Sammy explained less then a month ago why Sony not having a big exclusive in the fall was not that important but some people just want that "killer app" regardless whether the game is ready or not.
You guys are posting like the game's been cancelled! It's still coming out - just three or four months later than we expected.
@get2sammyb always will be negative reactions to delays. I actually am happy for it if it improves the end experience.
@ToddlerNaruto whilst your lists do have some great games to look forward to, it also highlights the lack of 'exclusive' titles. In the first list, only God of War 3 is an exclusive and also a remaster.
Hellblade and Until Dawn are expected in 2015 but with Uncharted and now Ratchet and Clank slipping to 2016 - both understandable reasons, it does make 2015 look light on exclusive games at the moment - maybe E3 will give us some surprises.
I know we have the 3rd Party multi-platform great games to play but I had hoped that PS4 would also have some great 'exclusives' to add to that list.
I don't think people are disappointed in the fact that these games are delayed as such but that there isn't anything to replace them or look forward to this year from an exclusive point of view -at least nothing announced yet.
Still can't wait for this and Uncharted 4...some good games still coming out in 2015 and who knows, Sony has had a year to work on games, so I see them announcing many good titles at E3...plus, there was rumor about a new Hot Shots Golf game being made, maybe that will come out soon and with God Of War 3 remastered being released, maybe a new God Of War title, or Gran Turismo or even Twisted Metal. Don't put sony down by stating Xone is getting a bunch of exclusives...they could still delay some of their titles.
I already own PS4 so I don't really care about exclusives. What I care about is if the game is good and that's it..
Greatness Awaits as they say.
@get2sammyb
From Early 2015 to Spring 2016, isn't that more than a few months?
@Punished_Boss_84 Touche. I just mean, we knew it was likely going to be holiday seeing as it never showed up in Early 2015.
Shame as the game is probably almost ready to go yet we have to wait for the film to release...
It's sad the film's getting delayed. But hey, at least we know they're not rushing it to release. (That's something!)
@BLPs To be fair, Ratchet & Clank's always been a looker, so I'm not surprised they're discussing that. He does say right in that quote, though, "spectacular new gameplay segments".
All of the Ratchet games have been fun IMO - I doubt this one will be any different.
@Gamer83 Sad part is unless its a remaster I doubt Sony has anything else aside from GoW 3, tearaway unfolded, and until dawn for the rest of the year. They really need to step it up.
Well after just finishing the HD trilogy last night and just re-starting (from a botched attempt to play it back in 2009) Tools of Destruction, this gives me plenty of time to get through the rest of the games before the Re-imagining comes out.
@get2sammyb Not gonna lie Sam Sony better show some good stuff at E3.
Not sure why anyone is personally bothered whether Sony have a first party title out at Christmas.
I choose my games based on whether they look good, not based on whether it's an exclusive. I've never played Ratchet and Clank before so will be looking forward to the game when it comes out
@WebHead I'd temper expectations on that one, after the expected "new uncharted 4 footage" and maybe collection, the show is bound to be taken by up 3rd party stuff. Star Wars Battlefront will be this year's Destiny to Sony, so they will be showing a lot of that. Street Fighter 5 should be there too and maybe CoD too. Sony know better then anyone that making big 3rd party titles seem like exclusives can pay dividends.
"Ready to kick some asteroid."
Kill me now.
@BAMozzy @themcnoisy I will never understand why most people think a console or handheld needs to have alot of great exclusives to be worth buying/using .
To me it doesn't matter if a game is available on another console/handheld (multi-plat) or isn't made by Sony themselves or a close partner (3rd party).
As long as I can enjoy the game , that's all that matters, period lol .
@ToddlerNaruto I don't think that at all but as someone who has both a PS4 and Xbox, its the exclusives that set each apart. It doesn't matter which console you own for those 3rd Party multi-plat games as I can play them on either console.
As an owner of both, I look at 'exclusives' as something specific to that console to look forward to. It doesn't mean that I am not looking forward to playing the 3rd party multi-platform releases in the interim and no doubt will buy some of these on PS4 too. I guess I look at games as general (multi-plat), PS4 and XB1. I can be quite indecisive over multi-plat games as to which console I will buy them on and often look forward to their release as a game rather than associating them to a console. With exclusives, they are obviously console specific and I look forward to those with a console in mind. So for example the next PS4 game I definitely want is Uncharted 4 but that doesn't mean to say its going to be the next game I get on PS4 - if that makes sense.
I think for many, exclusives are what define a console even if they have many more multi-platform games. When you think of Playstation, games like Infamous, Uncharted, Killzone, God of War etc immediately spring to mind, you don't necessarily think of multi-platform games - its the same with Xbox (Halo, Forza, Gears of War) and Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, Metroid). Maybe for some, exclusives justify their console choice - for example picking a PS4 to play those specifically as an XB1 would still have allowed them to play the 3rd Party games.
@WebHead
That's the way it seems right now. I'm pretty sure a remastered Uncharted Collection will be announced at E3, which is great for people who haven't played those games but does nothing for me. I would, however, be excited if the Gravity Rush rumors are true because that game deserves a second chance on a relevant system.
@BAMozzy I only plan on playing XB1 exclusives on a XB1. If a game is available on PS4 I'll play it on PS4, even if the XB1 version is superior somehow.
Thanks for being more clear though, sorry if I was being a bit defensive/over-reactive earlier.
@ToddlerNaruto Certainly didn't think you over reacted or got defensive at all. It explained your situation well so I tried to explain mine. If you only plan on playing exclusives on the XB1, then technically aren't you only interested in knowing about these? If it didn't have great Exclusives, then you wouldn't buy or use it. Do you look ahead at games like Forza, Halo, Gears of War as significant points for the XB1? I know I do and do the same for my PS4 with its exclusives even though I don't tend to play games exclusively on one system or the other. By having both it enables me to pick which console I want to play specific games on. This is often determined more by 3rd party deals but if there isn't these in place, I look at other factors, things like MP (my son has an XB1) or even which of my consoles has the fewest games.
@BAMozzy I'm honestly only interested in playing these XB1 exclusives.
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die
Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition
Ryse: Legendary Edition
Sunset Overdrive
State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition
Crackdown
Fable Legends
Quantum Break
Scalebound
There might be more, I haven't tried keeping track in many many months.
