If you ever had any doubt about the importance of PlayStation 4 indie No Man's Sky, SCEUK boss Fergal Gara has told MCV that the organisation will be putting its full weight behind the title. "The game has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios," he said as part of a wide ranging interview.
"We have been working very closely with the developers and bringing it into our release programme as if we had made it," he continued. "We are not going to treat it any differently and we are going to put the full weight of PlayStation behind it. If it all comes together as well as expected, it will be treated like a first-party release; it is not a self-published small indie title on the platform."
Such is the importance of the game that Gara believes that a retail release could happen, but he also entertained the possibility of the platform holder putting together some indie title bundles. "It is entirely possible that we will release some of these games together, digitally and physically, or one after another, but it will be decided on a title-by-title basis," he concluded.
Sony's actually packaged a handful of its digital titles together at retail in the past: the Journey Collector's Edition is one example, but engaged readers may recall the Best of PlayStation Network, Vol. 1, which collated Sound Shapes, When Vikings Attack, Tokyo Jungle, and Fat Princess on one Blu-ray. Bizarrely, there never was a Vol. 2 to the series.

One of my must buy games! I am waiting for this, more than other big games like MGS V.
I love Hello Games - they've always been lovely involving Push Square in their plans and talking to us. I will say, though: there's absolutely no way this can live up to expectations.
I hope I'm proven wrong.
Speaking of Tokyo Jungle....PS4 port pls.
Anyway, I am looking forward to this game but I'm keeping my expectations in check.
@get2sammyb I agree, whatever it ends up being people will claim they were lied to and promised so much more...
To be honest I'm just quietly looking forward to it, Hyper Light Drifter remains my most anticipated indie title!
@BLPs How can there be objectives, if the game is generating itself on the fly it would never be able to guarantee the objectives could be met, unless said objectives were so trivial they were downright dull.
I dunno, it really doesn't seem to have a gameplay hook, does it? I suppose if it's about reaching the centre of the universe or galaxy or whatever it may be a requirement to source items from the planets you visit to get there. I guess then it would be a pre-requisit that the games code generated eahc planet each planet with those items available to find. Argh it hurts my head.
@Get2sammyb
Almost nothing can live up to expectations, people tend to over hype games and when they come out, they bash it becuase they wanted much more, even if the game is great for what it is.
@BLPs
The object is to reach the center of the universe. Sure there is lots of exploration, but it looks more like a survival game.
@BLPs Here's what you do in the game:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/12/what_do_you_actually_do_in_ps4_indie_no_mans_sky
@BLPs
We don't know that yet, but I don't see a problem with it. Not all games need to hold your hand and point you to the end. Also as I said exploration is a part of it, why would they want to point you anywhere ?
@get2sammyb If I get to fly around a universe in a ship, and then find and explore new worlds, some of which have new life? I'm happy. That's really all I want from this title. Anything else is gravy.
@BLPS
Maybe I am wrong here, English are not my native language so I missed the point, but you explained me what is wrong with the game based on what most people want. What I said is that not all games must be the same, not all games need ot hold your hand and point you to an end.
It seems to me that you are overthinking it. Even without a purpose, it looks like a great game that can keep you with other means. What is on the next planet? Can I survive it? Will I get enough fuels for a longer trip or I will need to restock on the planet after this one? How much can I see before I lose?
Honesttly I can explain it very well, but the need to see more and what will amaze me at the end, is a good enough reason to play it.
Even If I get the wrong way and move away from the center it doesn't matters to me, it will be a new experience, something that I want for years.
What you said about Batman is something I agree, I rarelly play open world games because I got bored of them, I prefer the old style with levels. I think only finsihed Saints Row Iv and Sleeping dogs, trying to trade my GTA V copy now
As for the graphics, I completly agree! Tried both The Order and the Last of Us and got bored of them, couldn't even finished them for the story.
Btw you are nothing but a jerk, not a lot of people try to explain their views now days, it's easily to just flame you...
@BLPs
Now that you mentioned it, I can see my mistake there, sorry!
In my defence I did say about my English
As for the game I know very few people that want it, most seem to ignore it.
@BLPs
I want ot be a Wii U owner, it's the first Nintedo console I don't have and it kills me, but my financial are very bad at the moment and they haven't payed me since Dec 2013, stupid bureaucracy, but at least when i finish with it, I'll get all the money they owned me untill then and buy it at last!
@glassmusic Exactly. I don't need to shoot something in the face to have fun. The mystery of everything is the thought that excites me. It takes mankinds deepest desire and gives you the means to explore it
""The game has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios,""
Endless delays guaranteed. No wonder it hasn't come out yet. Does it even have a date yet? How long have we been waiting on this? I know it's not in FFXV or TLG territory yet, but it feels like a long time.
You gotta approach this title as an Isaac-like* indie title but made with a little help by Sony. Making people think of it as a first-party AAA title isn't a smart move, Sony.
*as in small game with potentially endless hours of fun if you get addicted to it.
This game is what will kick start the generation. Not sure how procedural generation will be good? There's a game from the 80s which looked at the gaming crash and procedurally generated into the hall of fame. No publisher would take a chance on it, the said it wouldn't work, it worked alright - in fact it was the best, it was Elite.
@get2sammyb @rjejr @BLPs it's going so suck i guarantee it! Overhyped game that never going to live up to it..
I'm really looking forward to this game. While I'm not expecting it to live up to the hype, (what game ever does?) I am very much excited for a nice-looking space exploration game with funky creatures <3
Why does everyone think it wont live up to the hype? Its gonna be a new experience for everyone whys that such a bad thing? Come on no mans sky prove these doubters wrong.
@BLPs well, no one play Minecraft for any objective too... people just sort of do their own things... And the game somehow become super popular. this is essentially Minecraft in space...
Its obvious that No Man's Sky won't live up to the hype. Hello Games haven't really said that much about No Man's Sky other than the scale of the universe/galaxy and some other little bits and bobs of info.
As soon as you think about being able to explore said space and planets your imagination can get a little carried away thinking about the potential possibilities.
There has never been a game to offer exploration on such a crazily large scale and in that lies the problem.
I too am really looking forward to No Man's Sky but im trying to manage my expectations. This game quite literary promises the sky and everything in it and as such my imagination kind of gets carried away at the potential. How could it not, we're explorers after all, if we weren't we'd still be living in caves on the African continent lol.
My point is, while this game has the potential to be the game all other adventure games are compared to and set a new standard it also has the potential to fail because of the promise No Man's Sky makes, not Helllo Games but the game itself. It also seems that people get way over hyped for games these days which is probably because of the internet and YouTube.
For me I've kind of learnt my lesson after getting so hyped for the potential I thought Destiny was going to have and (for me atleast) became very repetitive. I just hope the same won't be said about No Man's Sky a few weeks/months after release. I also like Helllo Games and wish them all the best for this very interesting new ip.
Some games don't need an objective, they just need you to sit back and enjoy. And this, would be one of those games. Board a ship, and see where it takes you. With that said, I hope it makes it's way onto Project Morpheus, I think it can be even better on VR versus conventional gaming, due to the format it takes.
This, Splatoon, Persona 5 and Arkham Knight are the only games I'm interested in this year. Been such a slow, dull year video-gaming wise.
@Sanquine Over-hyped games are only over hyped if you're stupid enough to let them be. If you sit looking for every bit of info on something as you wait for its release and build it up in your head then it will obviously disappoint. Nine times out of ten a hyped game sucks because of the person playing it, not the game itself being bad. I did it myself with Ocarina Of Time. I'd never wanted anything as much as that game but when it came out it didn't live up to what I imagined over three years previous. Was only about six years later when I went back to it and fell in love with what is still the best world created yet in a video game for me.
well with regards to it getting released, its a procedurally created universe so it may take the life of our Sun to finish it
but saying that it's one of the many games I'm looking forward to
@BLPs Looks like someone has failed their game designer course. To start off with your bad theory is the fact that this game isn't made by random at all. It has a set of rules that it has to follow. That's what procedural generation, nothing to do with randomness. Do you actually know anything about this game? Obviously not since there is way more things to do then what you are thinking there is. You can run from the cops, join groups such as pirates etc. And there is danger around the corner everywhere. You think you need objectives to have fun? Your psychological theory has to many problems, the fact that story based games is a dying breed. The fact that any sandbox game there is people rarely do what the story does tell them to do, usually they have their own fun just my killing civilians etc not even mentioning mine craft which has sold 1 billlion games. Someone failed that class to. Sorry to go off the procedural generation, but once that planet is made it will always be there, not even mentioning this game has a offline mode so this game can last forever especially with the amount of planets etc. So if you're gonna hate on something try to get your facts straight and at least play it first.
I feel Sony could be destroying a potentially great series by hyping a game up so peoples expectations are too high.
@rjejr in defence of Hello Games, a large part of the reason development has taken this long is because around Christmas the other year, the flooding in this area was so bad that their entire studio was effectively underwater, and they lost significant amounts of their resources.
Personally I have a lot of time for these guys. As a small indie development studio it can't be easy to bounce back from such a catastrophic loss, even with the backing of Sony, but they never missed a beat in terms of getting back on with things and driving the project forwards. I think they are a fantastic example of an independent developer striving for something bigger, and I really hope the game turns out well and that things go well for them going forwards.
Also, I have lived in the same area they're based all my life (and now the same town), so I've got to support the local talent!
I'm still waiting to see something from this game that's at all impressive. People cream themselves every time this game gets mentioned but I think it's simply because it's indie so instant win. The game could end up being great, but I haven't seen anything yet to get me hyped about it.
@Jazzer94
That's what Sony is supposed to do. Just like MS hypes up its games. If the game fails to live up to it it's because of one of two things. Either people set their expectations unrealistically high or the developers failed to deliver anything of substance. That isn't on Sony though.
@SteveButler2210 - Well that sucks, didn't know about the flooding. Hopefully they can still manage to get it all together.
Personally can't wait, got a lot of time for the guys making this(bought, played and loved all their games so far). Every time I see it, it keeps reminding me of something I've played before but I can't think what it is, maybe elite on c64(flying and exploring part of it) or another c64 game called hunter(I think) or maybe even buck Rogers on megadrive....i Hope they keep it that the only (main) goal is getting to the centre of the universe..gameplay stripped down and very pure.. Fly, discover, explore...
