PlayStation 4 Hardware Sales

At this point, we can probably all accept that the PlayStation 3 had problems. It was ultimately a great console, don't get us wrong – but Sony really misfired with the architecture and price, prompting it to lose ground against a very aggressive Xbox 360. With the PlayStation 4, however, the Japanese giant's got back to its industry leading best – and almost half of the new-gen system's owners are converts.

Game Informer reports that around 40 per cent of the PS4's install base consists of newcomers or people who didn't previously own a PS3. That amounts to about 8.08 million people if we take into account the most recent official sales figures from the manufacturer, equating to over 20.2 million units sold. And for people like Shuhei Yoshida, the president of the Japanese giant's Worldwide Studios network, it's why remasters make sense.

"The Last of Us Remastered that we released last year was hugely popular," he said. "When we look at the number of people who did not own a PS3 but do own a PS4, those are people who have never tried these games that were very, very popular on the PS3. Lots of people were asking for the Uncharted Collection. I'm confident that lots of people will have the chance to play Uncharted for the first time in a higher resolution, with better textures and animations."

Yoshida continued that he's not overly concerned about the people complaining about these re-releases online. "I'm not bothered by people who complain when we talk about remasters," he concluded. "There are always those people on the Internet." And to be fair, he's got a point. You don't have to buy these collections if you don't want them, and there's certainly no evidence that Sony's cancelling new games in favour of re-releasing old ones.
