At this point, we can probably all accept that the PlayStation 3 had problems. It was ultimately a great console, don't get us wrong β but Sony really misfired with the architecture and price, prompting it to lose ground against a very aggressive Xbox 360. With the PlayStation 4, however, the Japanese giant's got back to its industry leading best β and almost half of the new-gen system's owners are converts.
Game Informer reports that around 40 per cent of the PS4's install base consists of newcomers or people who didn't previously own a PS3. That amounts to about 8.08 million people if we take into account the most recent official sales figures from the manufacturer, equating to over 20.2 million units sold. And for people like Shuhei Yoshida, the president of the Japanese giant's Worldwide Studios network, it's why remasters make sense.
"The Last of Us Remastered that we released last year was hugely popular," he said. "When we look at the number of people who did not own a PS3 but do own a PS4, those are people who have never tried these games that were very, very popular on the PS3. Lots of people were asking for the Uncharted Collection. I'm confident that lots of people will have the chance to play Uncharted for the first time in a higher resolution, with better textures and animations."
Yoshida continued that he's not overly concerned about the people complaining about these re-releases online. "I'm not bothered by people who complain when we talk about remasters," he concluded. "There are always those people on the Internet." And to be fair, he's got a point. You don't have to buy these collections if you don't want them, and there's certainly no evidence that Sony's cancelling new games in favour of re-releasing old ones.

That's an incredible statistic. No wonder Microsoft's trying everything to keep 360 owners in the ecosystem.
Huh interesting.
I plan on getting a ps4 in august. Have a 360 and a couple games, but mostly a nintendo guy. Very happy that journey is being re-relessed, cause ill finally get to play it. Would love to see more re-released sets (like, why re-release god of war 3 without the first two?).
I don't mind remastering "some" games, but not a lot, especially at the expense of resources that can be used for creating "new ip's" or popular established games.
It's a good way for them to please the new converts, but at the expense of possibly turning faithful fans away, "if" they over do it.
I never owned a PS3. Last gen I was with Wii and PC. But my pc got obsolete, so now it's Wii U and Ps4, and no regrets!
@Sanasalin The first two were remastered from the PS2 versions and released as a collection on PS3. Not convinced a remastering of a remaster would be hugely in demand. Still the first 2 were awesome games.
If anything they should have thrown in a remastered GOW Ascension with the GOW3 remaster.
I had one for almost its entire history but I barely played it, that was more down to the games than anything.
I started off with a 360 when it broke I got a PS3 after about a week I had to swap it for another 360 I just hated it
What's wrong with you people. You've missed a whole generation of good games. lol
I am one of the convert too, vita was the one which convince me to Sony platform btw, so kinda sad for some reason.
Guess If I do not own ps4 I will be very distress
Backwards compatibility would work well in that scenario, right? I'd love it actually, not having had PS3 (jumped on the Wii train for a moment) I could play some games. Remasters will help with that but they won't remaster everything I wanted to play, PS Now may be part of the answer but we'll wait and see what they do with it. And no, I'm not going to buy PS3 just for that.
I have always had a Playstation in the house from the very first one. However the first one I bought for myself was a PS3 - the original 'phat' model as my son (who owned the Playstations) was moving out and the backwards compatibility meant I could play my PS2 games. Unfortunately due to YLOD, PSN issues - the hacking scandal and owning an XB360, it was a while before I replaced my old PS3 with a new Slim and set up the new account - the one I currently have.
The reason I bought an XB1 first was a matter of finances and games owned on XB360. As I had a Season Pass and my MP profile would transfer to the XB1, XBL Gold for a year, Titanfall due out and I found a bargain (console with 4 games), It was cheaper to upgrade that first - the equivalent on PS4 was around Β£200 more. It took me a while to get the funds to join the PS4 nation but I am here now....
I agree. And it definitely makes a lot of sense to make remasters. Welcome new owners. That's cool! I've been playing PlayStation since PSX. So I have no complaints. Just enjoying
About 80% of the PS3 owners still hasn't got a PS4!
Always had PS since 1997. Our lives would have been weird without it. Final Fantasy was our whole life for years.
PS4 is my first Sony console. Have a Wii U and a pretty respectable PC (mostly for blizzard games), and had a Wii at the tail end of it's lifespan. before that my last console was a NES so i have a lot of catching up to do.
Picked Sony over MS because a friend has a 360/xbone and no real reason to duplicate that. I'm happy with purchase so far, but I mainly picked it up to play multiplats that dont come to the Wii U, more for the new Batman game than anything. This is due to my aversion to PC ports, which I have been told arent as bad as they used to be.
I can take or leave the backwardsness for PS4 simply because I dont have the time to keep up with my backlog as it is. With all the remasters I am able to grab good games I missed, though not all.
I doubt(even tho some people say it) that the Xbox ONE has even sold 10 Million yet. I bet Millions are still stacked up high in the USA shops (the Xmas AC Xbox ONE Bundle is still available to buy on Amazon USA?!) + I thought Xbox gamers would have been a loyal bunch but i guess not. Unlike me i am PlayStation'Till'i'Die
Are those figures for America only ? I can't believe that's the case in Europe ,but then again perhaps this shows a huge amount of Americans have jumped shipped which is great news if true.
@Riririn I know I've missed out on a lot. Which is why I'm loving these remasters! Wii U and PS4 this gen for me.
Never owned a PS3, and loved the remaster of TLOU. Having had a PS1 and 2, I stuck with Nintendo for a few years. Since getting the PS4 last September (and joining this site!) I have not looked back. Awesome machine (and awesome site!)
@Riririn Nothing wrong mate, i just hated the Dualshock pre-PS4
On topic: Had a 360, bought a PS4, then bought a Vita in Tokyo when on holiday, and then picked up my neighbours Ps3 fcheap.. have not looked back since. Besides, i'm bored of Forza and Halo and Gears Of War... the monotony was endless..
With the death of the Wii U imminent I can see this trend continuing for the next couple of years. Most Nintendo fans I know would never even consider buying an Xbox.
@Neolit Yeah its quite bizarre how the controllers have changed. I was quite confy with the 360 one, with most of my mates hating it. The XbOne controller just doesn't feel right now after so long with the DS4.
It was my one concern before purchasing. Went to a preview before release with one of my Sony loving friends, and i loved it, felt great and comfortable
I always liked the dualshock controllers. I can't stand anything the Xbox had. But it probably has to do with what you're used to.
Maybe they should get the PS4 to play Xbox 360 games lol
I can say I am one of those people. My main choice of console has been always Nintendo but I am not one of those naive Nintendo fans that think every game out there should be on a Nintendo system, so I usually get another system for games like GTA, Street Fighter, and most other 3rd party games. Last gen I went from PS2 to the Xbox 360 cause as Sammy said, the price also the fact that they took BC out of the newer model PS3s. This gen however I came back to PS brand again due to price (I wasn't going to pay 100 more for a ridiculous paraphernalia that I would never use) and MS b.s. DRM policies at the time. I have to say I am rather enjoying the PS4.
However since MS announced BC on the Xbox One I will be getting one of those soon.
@Tasuki I agree
Its true, I haven't loved a Playstation this much (my PS4) since my PS2 days. Sold my Wii U to get it pre-owned, as I got tired of great games totally skipping my console. With amazing experiences on the horizon, Sony has earned me back. Now if they could just cut this VR crap for a serious handheld that people actually go nuts for. I'm not really a fan of Microsoft and the only thing I like about the One is the controller.
I never owned a ps3 did try to get one a couple of time but my 360 wasn't worth anything at trade in lol
I have owned every Sony gaming device except for the PS4, and I have no desire at the monent to get one.
The Wii U and 3DS just has the games I want to play, and I still have my PS3 and Vita.
Nintendo right now is were it is at, might get a PS4 come Holiday time if an actual good bundle comes out.
Welcome....get yourselves a PS1, 2 & 3 now and become one with Sony:)
@Carl-G A lot of people who bought the 360 had a playstation 2 before that, so there's no loyalty as such.
We are the 20% of gamers who buy 80% of the games.
The PS3 was the only Sony console I didn't own. When it came time to choose between the PS3 and Xbox360 I chose the 360 based solely on the controller. When the time came to upgrade I figured that worked before so I picked up a PS4.
@itshoggie Why?
PS3 was 10x the system 360 could ever be.
I didn't own a PS3 until Christmas 2011, but that's because I didn't have a job and until then it was always too expensive for my mom.
However, I've never owned anything Xbox or Nintendo. Concerning PS4, I plan on buying one during Fall 2016.
It's an old argument and one that people want to dispute but I don't care I'll stick to my guns. I know nobody forces people to buy these remasters and I don't care about their existence. It is a problem though when these are your big 'exclusives' for the holidays. Not trying to come of as a jerk here either. It's just my belief, and always will be, that you need at least one, big AAA exclusive for the holiday season whether it's a totally new IP or a sequel. Hopefully Holiday 2016 will be better for Sony in that department. God of War 4 would fit the bill or maybe Horizon. While it seems to be fairly far along, I can't see Horizon being released before late 2016 at the earliest.
@NaughtyOttsel22
PS3 ended up being better but not 10x better than 360. In fact for much of last gen I thought MS had the advantage. Then it saw Nintendo's success with the Wii, allowed its judgement to get clouded and released that steaming pile of garbage known as Kinect and things went south quickly.
I've got a PS3 but not a PS4. Funny old world.
In 2009 I bought a 360 mainly because console and games were cheaper than PS3. This fall I'll buy a PS4 mainly because of some exclusives. If only it had backward compatibility... but remasters are welcome to me. Any chance of having a Demon Souls one?
I didn't have a ps3 before I got a ps4. But I had a 360 and Xbox One before getting it. I only bought it for tlou, but after wanting to play uncharted, heavy rain and the older killzone games I now have all 4 hooked up and they all get regular usage.
I'm currently on my 4th PS3 because I play them to death. Literally.
Had a 360 because of the PS3 release delay in the UK, but always been a Playstation fan since the first one blew me away. Ended up having both Xbox 360 and PS3 as pre-ordered the PS3 a long time before the delay and forgot about it, but was glad i got it as I ended up playing it far more often.
When I saw the PS4 and Xbox One reveals at E3, I pre-ordered the PS4 the next day and saw no reason to look at the Xbox One. Despite some tempting offers, I've still not really seen a reason to spend out on the One.
Went from 360 and wii to ps4 and U. This is my first sony console in my 26 years of life
I had a PS and PS 2, skipped the 3rd generation - it looks like I missed out on a lot of great games. Now have a PS 4 and a Wii U. More than enough to play
