Shadow of the Beast is a beloved brand for many, so there was a mixture of excitement and trepidation when Heavy Spectrum announced that it would be taking the series' reins and rebooting it for the PlayStation 4. This first footage of the new-gen version proves that there was little to worry about, however, as the release is looking pretty darn rad.
As with the originals, the action takes place on a side-scrolling plane, and you'll be mowing through enemies from the left and right. The combat's accessible, but appears to have lots of depth; you'll need to mix up your attacks and use finishers to maximise your score, giving you plenty of incentive to master the systems. The biggest takeaway is just how gory it is, though – there's blood absolutely everywhere.

A side scrolling puzzle platformer with QTE's.
So disappointing......
@Johnnycide I think it looks quite cool. The combat seems pretty fun. I think those QTEs are just finishing moves and let you pick which side you want to attack - don't quote me on it, though.
I really like the look of this. Cool
Much improved from the last demo, not my type of game but it looks great so I might give it a chance
I had a Mega Drive and don't remember this game at all. It's the first time I've heard of this series. I thought at first it might be what Altered Beast was called in America, but no, different series.
never ever paying for a sidescroller....on such an expencive console..
I just stumbled upon my SEGA copy of Shadow of the Beast 2, anxiously awaiting this one.
@get2sammyb I saw a video of them playing it at E3 and it just looks all wrong to me. I'm a big fan of the original (used to have a framed print of the Roger Dean artwork) and still play it now and again. This just looks like a 2.5d god of war clone though. Those prompts onscreen just look so intrusive, especially as the original was so minimal with regards to a hud etc- which was a rarity at the time. I'm still hoping it turns out good but this has knocked my enthusiasm a bit.
@Matroska I remember it from the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, think even the Commodore 64 had a version. Didn't know it was on Megadrive.
@stevejcrow Yeah, and the SNES apparently. It's was ported all over the place. I'll check out some videos of it and see if that rings any bells. Seems odd I'd have missed it, especially since I'm familiar with the developer's other stuff.

I had this on my Amiga 500+. So bloody hard, an early Psygnosis great though, purely just for the art style.
One of my favourite game on my beloved Lynx.... I remember at the time its graphic was stunning.... and such a bloody hard game too....
@get2sammyb @Johnnycide I was also interested in playing this, until I saw it was a side-scroller.
Oh well, there are still PLENTY of other new games to play.
I'm glad they kept to 2D side-scroller for this and didn't go 3D. Also like the parallax scrolling effect on the backgrounds. When the original came out those effects were mind-blowing and had never been seen before!
Overall it looks ok but where's all the trippy enemies that the game is known for like the bouncing eyeballs etc?!
