People, we can talk about the Final Fantasy VII Remake like it's a real thing – because it is. The game was announced during Sony's big E3 2015 press conference as a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 4 – and the reveal blew pretty much everyone at Push Square Towers' mind. Associate editor Robert Ramsey is still hyperventilating.
But, much like Shenmue III, the time for surprise and celebration is over – we want to learn a little more about the game. Speaking with Dengeki Online, director Tetsuya Nomura has admitted that the developer's return to Midgar will be more than just pretty graphics. "We can't talk about any further details, but it won't be a simple remake," he said.
He continued: "We haven't put out any screenshots yet, but we're making considerable progress, so please look forward to it. This time we are formally introducing [Kazushige] Nojima as the scenario writer. That being the case, he will be influencing the setup as far as the story, so you'll have that to look forward to as well."
And when will we learn more about the title? Sadly, it'll be a little while yet. "Sometime during the winter, we're planning to have a follow-up report," he explained. "I believe that we're going to announce the official title, at least, but as for other details, we're in the process of determining what we're going to put out."
Nomura seems committed to the idea that Final Fantasy VII Remake won't just be a simple re-telling of the original game. He told Famitsu that the title needs to be "made with a different approach that matches the times". To be fair, there are parts of the original that wouldn't hold up today, so it's going to be interesting to see how it decides to tweak things.

It's to be expected, I just hope they don't change too much.
Was VII the one with the terrible card game as the minigame? If so I hope they change THAT...
Who reckons and SPOILERS for FFVII
that Aerith lives this time?
I don't think it should be. I'm positive some things need reworking given how old the game is.
@adf86 I'm pretty sure her death is common knowledge at this point. I've never played it but I know that since it's brought up often.
@Mega-Gazz no, that's FFVIII, and Triple Triad is awesome.
@adf86 no way she lives. That would ruin so much of the game. They should totally make people believe there's a way to revive her at some point though...
Never played it. When is it out in Europe?
@Mega-Gazz No the game your thinking of is uno on the xbox. That is truly terrible.
I'm intrigued as to what needs changing? Blocky graphics - yup, Load times moving areas - yup, that's probably about it. They best not ruin the story. Its brilliant. The first 4)5 hours I spent with ff7 are the most eye opening and iconic I have played. On par with half-life, Mario 64 and GTA 3.
The thing that would concern me if I was a fan of FF VII and looking forward to buying this game is what does SquareEnix actually consider 'considerable progress.' 10 percent done and on track for 2019? I mean, we're still waiting for FF VS XIII, which was announced about 7 years ago and underwent a name change. Time does need to be taken with this project though, can't screw up badly with a remake of a game revered like this one.
I want to play it because I want to understand the hype. The trailer looked kind of boring imo, but I never played the original so maybe that's why I felt that way.
The music was pretty nice though.
I almost don't mind any gameplay updates or tweaks they make (FF15 style summons, hell yes!!), as long as they keep the story identical! In effect, if this is a completely new game with the storyline of FF7, that's fine by me!
In terms of gameplay though, I hope they keep the ATB system. And save points rather than checkpoints to heighten the terror when you're low on potions in a high levelled area XD.
I'm so damn hyped for this...I feel that I can only be disappointed...
I was so excited for this that I rewatched Advent Children on Saturday night. FF7 is probably my favorite game of all time.
