While the hype has been almost unbearable since Fallout 4's reveal trailer popped up on the internet yesterday, there's been much debate over how good the game actually looks. And, although we're not going to stick our noses into this particular kerfuffle, we will go ahead and post a load of high resolution screenshots taken directly from the aforementioned video.
In short, it looks like the Boston-based adventure will sport plenty of interesting locations to explore - abandoned or otherwise. How do you think it looks? Is it next-gen enough for you? Are you counting the pixels? Does it need more contrast? Why don't some smaller objects cast shadows? Are there too many jaggies? Will it be downgraded? Attempt to answer all of these super important questions and more in the comments section below.

I think it looks nice enough. I still have so many games to play, though, including new Vegas. Elder scrolls 6 would be day one - but I'll probably wait for a sale on fallout. I did like fallout 3 though.
That ass needs more substance imo.
Anyway...why are people hating on the fact this game is more colorful? And why are the graphics "dated and ugly"? I love the fact this game looks less green/brown and I'd rather have an honest trailer like this than some fake Watch Dogs/The Witcher nonsense.
I am so ready! Fall 2015 plsplspls
All about the gameplay but as someone who still plays the amiga with the family from time to time it looks good to me. We don't know so much about this and what changes will occur or even if it's load screen free. To early to be giving good or bad appraisals
The lighting seems a bit odd, but it is still nice. I hope they developed or fine tuned a better engine, the previous one was extremely glitchy and finicky
As long as I can slow mo a round slap bang into a massive spider using vats - that's good enough for me.
What's strange is I loved both fallout 3 games but other than the initial part as a baby (which was a brilliant way to pick your stats) and beating on some Elvis dudes its pretty much a blur. Maybe in that sense a more colourful world will help with the individuality of areas.
I looked at some screenshots over on Reddit today that didn't have all the YouTube compression, and I must say, I needed some water to help wash down my words that I had to eat. It does look really nice, looking at it how it's intended to be looked at. I still think the animation is wonky, as it is in The Witcher 3, but I know when I've been shown.
As much as Skyrim was fun I'm not about to forget how badly it ran on PS3.. As such I'll remain somewhat apprehensive about this!
@kyleforrester87 I think first things first, we need to find out what engine it runs on. If it's a modified version of the Skyrim engine, we're probably in trouble.
After that, we need to consider that Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim all ran poorly on PS3 partly because of the console's limited memory. With any luck, the PS4 - which is essentially in line with a decent gaming PC - will prove to be much more accommodating, and easier for Bethesda to work with.
But I'm with you - I adore Bethesda's open world games, but I need a lot more info before I start bouncing off the walls. Been burned before!
@ShogunRok As I understand it was always an issue of insufficient memory (which could have probably been solved with better planning and optomisation from the start, but whatever!) so hopefully PS4s increased memory will be enough but I hope they don't approach it with a lazy mindset. I'm not the most entitled gamer but I'd really really like to see that they learnt from the mistakes they made and deliver a solid experience.
I'm personally amped for this game and I happen to think the visuals are great.
yep looks good. but does the vault jump suit need to be so tight lol hope there is more variety in character models. i realize food is hard to come by out in the waste land but surely some people would spend their caps on food rather than survival equipment. i want to see people with random weight and height. in the other fallous EVERYONE looked like a store mannequin. anyway im just so excited, this is going to be great
Fallout has never been about the graphics for me, i love the gameplay. However a few less issues with how the game runs will be a nice bonus
Just like everyone else I want to have my cake and eat it too, but just like everybody else already knows gameplay first graphics second.
It's not the resolution, it looks fine, it's the textures and poly count that makes it look last gen, but by no means even remotely a deal breaker. Otherwise it's a fine looking game that I can't wait to play.
As far as the animation and frame rate goes, I think in the demo trailer it looks fine, from the curtains being gently blown by the wind to the movements of the German Shepherd's slight bending of it's ankles as it's walking, to when it nudges the rocket mobile over the crib, all while it's opening and closing it's mouth and panting with occasional realistic tongue movements at the same time.
I think what throws people off on the animation is the poly count is low on the German Shepherd and it makes the dog a little "chunky" so they think it doesn't look fluid enough and the textures are flat like last gen graphics.
But again to me it's the poly count and the flat painted on textures that say "last gen" game that "maybe" make it a converted next-gen game.
But other than nit picking it, it's beautiful enough, not even remotely hideous visually and I'll definitely be pre-ordering it.
@kyleforrester87 from what I read the developer said it was because the ram in the ps3 was split so half had to be used for graphical effects and the other half for whatever you wanted. Whereas 360 you could use the whole 512 mb for whatever you pleased leaving them no choice than to use the hard drive as makeshift ram, so in essence they didn't really have much choice.
Can't wait for Fallout 4, yes it looks like the old game engine just spruced up but hopefully because of that it'll be silky smooth which is more important for me. With a bit of luck I might finish the Witcher before this comes out 😀
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, personally I couldn't really care how the game looks (relatively speaking) as long as it runs smoothly. All I ask is no bloody crashes or broken quests.
I'm very excited about this game. And maybe my German Shepard will want to play with me as the dog. I think he could relate pretty well
could that be dogmeat?!? could this be a prequel?!?
is it out yet!?!? HURRY UP!
I hope the character creation is decent and we're able to churn out some decent looking female characters that walk and jump properly.
Im starting to truly believe all those "its a hoax guys", and "unofficial" teasers over the years were all advertising!
Bethsoft all but denied it was set in Boston…
Well played I say, am looking forward to it!
