There's been very little cause for PlayStation Vita owners to celebrate of late, but Sony's diminutive device has just hit a major milestone in Japan, crossing the 4,000,000 unit threshold. This number takes into account both handheld and PlayStation TV sales, but seeing as they're both built upon the same hardware, we reckon that that's fair game.
Of course, without meaning to rain on the portable's parade, it's perhaps worth noting that the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 18 million units to date, so we doubt that Sony's system will be catching up any time soon. Even more worryingly, the PSP crossed 20 million units domestically, so the Vita's really struggled to capture its predecessor's glory.
Nevertheless, well done, old chap – we still love you.

I've come to accept that the Vita is a legacy device, and have grown to love it for what it is. It's the only handheld that lets me play games from my childhood on the go, as well as loads of fun, cheap, and quality indie games.
@darkhairwarrior Doesn't really bother me either, to be honest. I still play my Vita a lot and prefer playing a lot of the smaller downloadable games on it. It could have been so much more, but I don't think what it is is particularly bad.
Recently I bought freedom wars form the store on sale and I love it i don't see why everybody complains about it. I also bought soul sacrifice delta in sale its downloading now
@get2sammyb I only become slightly bothered when I look at my PSP collection and see how many amazing games it had, GTA, MGS, GT, FF: Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts and so much more. Vita was on track and had some great game KZ: Mercenary, Gravity Rush and Tearaway but it will never match its predecessor in my eyes which is a shame as I think it is the better console out of the two.
Well, the vita might not be doing as well as the 3ds or psp, it isn't doing too bad.
Vg charts estimated the world wide sales of the system in fall 2014 at 9.14 million, while Nintendo's Wii U console is around 9.5 million. Considering the vita is doing ok in Japan, it should be at least on par with Wii U sales at least, so over all Sony is doing pretty well, but obviously the portable market is there weak spot.
I hope Sony takes another chance at the portable market, and learns from their mistakes on the system. Personally, I think the vita is better then the 3ds, too bad that Nintendo has that market thanks to easy to pick up and play series, like pokemon and Mario:-P
It's a lovely little system, and I'm thankful that it's still getting Japanese support. And because Sony doesn't region-lock things, I can piece together an even bigger library by importing. Hooray!
The Vita passed the lifetime sales of both the Genesis/MD and Gamecube in Japan.
@get2sammyb
"small CONSOLation"
I see what ya did there.
I have only had my Vita for about a week but don't regret the purchase one bit... I just finished Uncharted GA and was pleasantly surprised with how good it was.
As a console guy at heart I wasn't sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it.
@Jazzer94 the psp library is on the vita - its just a little blurry at times. Ive bought loads of ps1 and psp games - wish they had trophy support though.
Made up with the vita but the memory card issue ruins my enjoyment. Only holding 5 or 6 games at a time is frustrating and has stopped me buying more games.
@themcnoisy Some of the PSP library is available to play on Vita not even close to all of it. To be honest that doesn't even change my point, to me a consoles greatness isn't measured by the amount of old game it can play that I've already experienced it is the new games that make the difference and the PSP absolutely beats the Vita out in this regard.
@Jazzer94 Sorry man I was advising you in case you didn't know. But yup I agree to an extent.
It should become a big time legacy system with EVERY Ps one, megadrive, master system, Amiga, commodore, psp, Atari jaguar and other defunct legacy consoles games on it. That would be killer usp. But there's no denying the psp had more successful during its time.
Just got danganronpa 2. So my vita will be getting 30 hours off love over then next month or so.
Pity, what a pity, damn Sony.
