In the cold, hard, sobering light of day, let's be honest: Shenmue III doesn't look very good yet. Unlike other Kickstarter campaigns, Yu Suzuki is flogging this project on the branding alone – and it's worked. But with the funding drive already successful – and Sony admitting that it will be putting its hand in its pockets as well – it's time to start thinking about the actual game.
One of the questions that we've been pondering over the past few days is just what is wrong with protagonist Ryo Hazuki's face? Shen Hua looks reasonably okay – although not a patch on her Dreamcast model – and the environments look relatively great, but the star of the show looks all kinds of wrong. That's because these are very, very early pictures.
"The screenshots and images posted are still in the early stages of development, and will continue to be improved," explains an update on the game's Kickstarter page. "Please help spread the word on all of your social networks so that we can deliver a Shenmue 3 that lives up to its legacy." In other words: the more money that the campaign makes, the more that the team will have to spend on polish.
At the time of typing, the project's acquired $3.3 million, but it is starting to slow down now. A new option was added for $3,000 which includes a replica of Ryo's jacket, and that has sparked an upswing in pledges, but we expect this to be a very front-loaded campaign. Naturally, it's going to keep getting donations, but we suspect that it'll top out at just a little above Bloodstained.

Great news. He does not look like Ryo at all. The one character you expect them to nail since day 1.
They need to work on the voice acting as well, it was fine 14 years ago but now it is just terrible.
@Jazzer94 It's going to be a real challenging project for them when all's said and done. They're going to need to evolve the whole thing on a small budget, but still keep it faithful to the originals.
As long as they keep people up to date on the progress by showing everyone were they're in the development process it should keep peoples interest. That way they will hopefully keep getting pledges.
Its a shame they can't re release the original 2 games in HD as they could use some of the money earned through sales to support Shenmue 3.
Ryo looks white there...
But she looks pretty fine. lol At least she looks Asian.
@WARDIE You bet your bottom dollar SEGA is paying attention now. I think it'll happen.
@get2sammyb A HD remaster pack I wouldn't mind paying for. I don't own the original DC versions. They could need a new shiny coat anyway.
Hope we get a physical copy...
@get2sammyb Yeah I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the guys at Sega get together and talk about Shenmue 3 not only being a PlayStation exclusive but also being supported by Sony too.
I was one of the people wishing for someone to help bring Shenmue back and always wondered why Kickstarter wasn't looked at as a viable option of funding. I couldn't believe it when it was announced.
I watched the Sony press briefing with a few friends and much to my surprise none of them had ever played the first two Shenmue games. Some hadn't even heard of the game. Im so happy they will get the chance to finally see what all the fuss is about.
