A revised PlayStation 4 is set to launch later this month in Japan, which seems designed to bring production costs down. In addition to being a little lighter and a teensy bit less power hungry, the device also comes with a few other minor alterations – including mechanical buttons, which means that you'll no longer accidentally turn the device on while you're wiping away dust and finger prints.
You already know about the matte hard drive cover, of course, but did you know that it'll also boast a shorter LED light on the top? This is one tweak that we're not too keen on to be honest – we like that pulsating strip – but if the trimmed bulb does the exact same thing, then we'll cope. The question is: do these changes appeal to you? Make some adjustments in the comments section below.

I'm happy with my launch model thanks but if it ever starts to break then I'll get a newer model
Personally I'd like a couple of usbs at the back of the system with revised thumbsticks on the controller.
Other than power consumption all the changes seem absolutely irrelevant. I agree with Jimlig, how about some more USB slots..
@KratosMD I tend to agree with you. I was surprised they went back to touch buttons, too.
OMG I AM SO GLAD THEY DITCHED THOSE AWFUL TOUCH BUTTONS!!!!
dammit now I'll have to buy one but I just bought 9 new amiibo ><
It's not enough for me to swap out my launch model for one but if mine breaks, I won't be too upset having to upgrade. I do like the shiny hard drive cover though.
@BLPs Fixed.
I WANT MORE USB SLOTS
Can we have nozzles instead of buttons?
It has buttons?!
@Neolit You might want to get that checked as I've never had any issue with noise from mine. The PS4 is quiet as a mouse next to my PS3 slim (both stored horizontally), which makes an absolute racket by comparison.
Yeh, mine can get pretty noisy when it's working hard.
Real buttons will be an improvement, my PS4 regularly gets switched on if I even just wave a duster near it. It is VERY touch sensitive
I hate the touch buttons... I accidentally turn it on all the time. I have more consoles next to it.
I like the matte hard drive cover so much I'd buy one to replace my glossy panel if Sony sell them separately...!
@AyeHaley - "but I just bought 9 new amiibo"
eBay the 9 new amiibo and you'll have enough to pay for the PS4.
I'm glad I never took amiibo too seriously - we have 5, but 2 are still in boxes b/c there doesn't seem to be any reason to take them out - but Lego Dimensions is going to bankrupt us. I let all the relatives buy the kids SKylanders for the holidays and just the game during BF sales.
So w/ these changes, does this become the new model slim or stealthily replace the old one? I bought the phat 80GB PS3 after they dropped the USB ports and BC, but it's still phat, not slim, which came out after.
Launch models just fine...takes a long press to actually turn it on! =P
@DoublezZ01 Not really. Unless you consider a second a long time.
Yea, I'd imagine the touch sensitive buttons are more of a "pro" look. Similar to how they have changed to a matt cover for a more "casual" look.
Personally I'm not a fan of touch buttons on anything so for me it's a welcome change.
@Riririn t g ats whst i mesnt! Long press mot a tap or swipe! I've accidentally turned on the. X1 but never the 4! And there right by each other!
@SteveButler2210 Mines horrible sounding when playing Witcher 3, but quite on all other games
Like others here I can also say I am not a fan of touch buttons.
Funny story, I didn't have a PS3 so when I got my PS4 I didn't know there were touch buttons, I thought you used the controller to turn on the system and eject discs through the menu. I didn't find the buttons till I went to dust off the PS4 a few weeks after I got it. Scared the heck out of me when I did that.
@Tasuki I knew you could turn it on with the controller, but I had to Google were the "buttons" were located. They favoured design over convenience. I really don't mind big buttons sticking out, at least I know where to find them then and I wont accidentally push them.
@Jimlig MORE Ports would be welcomed. and honestly concave thumbstick would be great honestly. But in the mean time they just need to support Xinput/3rd party controllers, I could imagine it's a very simple addition since I'm sure it's probably an option on dev kits -___- cmon sony, hand over the 3rd party accessories already!
Sata 3 connection inside (6tb ssd on the horizon already and ssd prices set to tumble - this addition alone would transform the PS4 completely), USB 3 ports and wireless AC would have been amazing too. PS4 Premium £425 - I'd buy it.
@KratosMD "...the device also comes with a few other minor alterations – including mechanical buttons..." This is a BIG plus to me... No more auto eject when overheat!
@Neolit. Mine is silent even after 1 hour of gta5
You accidently turn it ON?! Why would anybody turn it OFF in the first place? You Guys are so weird...
@thaScotneck @SteveButler2210 You might want to get your PS4s checked. It's only normal for the fans to come on. If they are silent then your PS4s are likely to have a short lifespan with the internals overheating. @Neolit is not the one who should be worrying.
How are we supposed to apply our own stickers to a matte HDD cover? I'm still deciding between a Kojima Fox and an Imperial cog. Might be cool to dremel carvings into and/or paint a matte one tho! Hmm...
What's wrong with launch editions having "real" chrome, smart buttons, or feeder disc drives? Give me my 60gb fatty or give me death.
