Ah, remasters: some loathe 'em, some love 'em. Whichever camp you fall into, it doesn't sound like they're going to stop anytime soon – especially when people are campaigning for more to get made. SOCOM 2 is the latest target of fans, as a group of military aficionados rally around the forgotten franchise to get its second instalment ported to the PlayStation 4.
To be fair, this was a very popular game on the PlayStation 2 – almost incredibly so given the rudimentary online functionality incorporated into Sony's classic console. It did get sequels – several across both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable – but none quite captured the spirit of the second game. Zipper Interactive, the series' developer, was eventually closed.
The push appears to be targeting Gio Corsi and his #BuildingTheList campaign, which seems to be a mistake as he primarily deals with external projects. Either way, there's a petition through here which has already amassed almost 1,000 signatures. And if it fails – well, there's always H-Hour: World's Elite on the way which looks exactly the same.

Used to play Socom 2 online but no way does this deserve a remaster, just play one of Ubisofts 50,000 up and coming online team shooters
There doesn't seem to be anything unique about it compared to other similar games today. This is why I can't get into shooters. But for those who do like them, there are already many games out already and more to come probably offering a similar if not better experience. But you know, I guess there's a fanbase for everything.

To these comments here, there has been not a single game that has come close to touching SOCOM 2's gameplay in terms of mechanics n addictiveness. For a ps2 game it was pretty advanced for its time. SOCOM is what created gamebattles and had more online players than all of Xbox live combined. Nothing compares to the game still today. It's servers lasted 10 years and people still play it today through a shared LAN connection from PC. Our fan base is some of the most passionate and hardcore of any community out there. SOCOM 2 was by far the best shooter to exist and still is. I have played it for a decade now and haven't stopped. If Shenmue can get a ks by selling 500k copies and have a ks funded in a day then we can do it in 4 hours. Do not compare SOCOM 3 or Confrontation or SOCOM 4 to SOCOM 2. SOCOM 2 is the gem of the series and will always be king of competitive.
I bet you're not as passionate as the "Mother" fanbase. Those guys are hardcore. I don't think I could ever love something as much as how they love Earthbound.
@Riririn nope pretty sure we beat em out. We campaign all year round and always think of new ways to be heard. Check out Therealsocom.com
We even have 2 mods for counterstrike and insurgency which have been highlighted through their twitter n a twitch stream.
around 6 people trying to remake a socom game. 1 of which was successfully kickstarted and put on steam but fell apart because the vision of the game had taken a hard right turn. Tons of different articles on various media sites. People being banned or blocked from some sony execs because they had tried to push the game for 24 hour + without sleeping. Tons of things like that happening.
@S2celerity Of course you say that. Since you're a fan. Everybody thinks they are the best and biggest. You should stop trolling Sony tho.
@Riririn how are we trolling sony? We are doing a campaign for something we love. You have not experienced what SOCOM was back in the day so you have no right to make judging remarks of our fan base. We have been through a struggle n wasted countless dollars trying push through.
@S2celerity Played a ton of Counter-Strike.. SOCOM 2 for a few months. Just not as much fun. As a CS fan, I'd say that was the best online shooter in terms of gameplay and mechanics
@kyleforrester87 camping in one spot n having to stand completely still just isn't that entertaining for me although socom was very similar to cs it just had more of a spark to it n being a tps gave you far more visual awareness. The movement was far smoother than cs as well. CS is successful today because it's formula never changed if SOCOMS formula didn't change it would still be right where CS is today
@S2celerity Not sure camping in one spot is a fair assessment of how a round of CS plays out, but I won't try to change your mind. You clearly like your Socom, so good luck with your campaign and I hope you get your remake.
My List of Games(old & new) i want to come back to come to PS4 -
TimeSplitters 2 HD (& TS 4)
Crash Bandicoot 4 (by ND)
The Getaway 3 (by RAD. Shame they don't want to be PS Exclusive)
Ape Escape 4
@kyleforrester87 thanks man and that's just how I see competitive in cs. The public rooms just seem more fun definitely but I'm more of a tps guy
@Carl-G Ape Escape 4 needs to happen. I don't know is Sony still cares tho. It's sad that so many IPs disappear.
I played a lot of SOCOM 2, but I have serious doubts on how well a remaster would compare to a modern online shooter. I mean, for console owners, I think it it was as much the novelty of playing online with friends and chatting with them in different places that was so much fun, which is of course the norm nowadays.
However, if there are enough people who want a remake, I of course wouldn't begrudge them of requesting it. But it's always going to be a niche release, not a money maker. I certainly wouldn't buy it, even though I really loved playing the original.
@S2celerity i have to agree, socom 2 was a defining multplayer experience. I must say though, i really enjoyed the campaigns in each game. I would rather see a compilation of all the ps2 socom games in 1 rather then just 2 only because i wantcto play through the campaigns with trophies:)
@S2celerity They tried.. It was a failure.. Hence H-Hour: World's Elite. Which by the way.. is nothing like SOCOM 2.. It is a broken game.. from a developer who decided to play on peoples emotions from SOCOM, and try to use it to their advantage so that they could make money. They originally had David Sears.. Who is critical in capturing the essence of SOCOM, but they quickly eliminated him from the plans, and went a different direction. He had a great idea for the game, and had true passion to get it done too.. It is unfortunate that it became the game it is today.. It had true potential.. The reason SOCOM failed in the first place, was because they tried to cater to the Mainstream FPS fans.. and were trying to steal their fan base away.. IT didn't work and the studio failed miserably.
I would finally buy a ps4 for this alone. Granted I haven't played many games for some years now, but socom 1 and socom 2 were my favorite online games ever.
Zipper interactive by far has been the best developers for shooter games. You need skill to actually play there games. I learned those who never could keep up online didn't like the game. Please remaster zipper please come back
Would love socom remastered I've played Cod and BF series amoungst others Socom is and still is the only shooter requiring team tactics and communication via mic. I can play ANY shooter solo and be successful but try not communicating on any Socom series and your sure to lose that's is only a small % of what this series offers to shooters. besides FPS isn't the same as 3rd person shooters hope this happens I've even considered buying a ps2 just to play it.
No other game has has ever had a community as great as socom. From the servers to the clan setup. We're talking about a game that made MLG. I'm so sick of respawn bs games I could scream. Everybody that played socom got to know eachother. Everybody talked on their headsets. If you died you could watch the players still alive and communicate with the other dead people on you squad. I been playing Metal gear online and it's ok but still not close to being socom. No one talks, no one communicates, there is no clan set up. The servers were superior in socom. To think this game wouldn't compare to modern shooters is ridiculous, we played the modern shooters and they don't stack up to socom 2.
Listen I stopped buying Playstation when they stopped making socom always loved socom I even liked confrontation a whole lot I wouldn't mind them continuing from confrontation and doing some socom 2 maps as extention packs that would be cool I will sell my Xbox one an buy my ps4 when socom comes back out
The Socom 1 & 2 following is REAL.
I've never seen a game asked for SO much and NOT delivered.
I bought a PS4 in hopes that H - Hour: World's Elite was going to be the spiritual successor of Socom 2.
How sad I am that I RARELY use my ps4 because they won't give me MY game.
A Socom 2 remake would take PSN by storm.
Newer, younger gamers do NOT know what they missed.
As many of the other people that actually played Socom 1& 2 have mentioned...
You had to actually be good at this game to get a good K:D ratio.
You couldn't get 3 kills and then go off 15 more free kills from a kill-streak perk.
You had to communicate with your team.
Your position was not given away on a HUD. Stealth actually mattered.
Also, the word "NUBE" was generated by this game. It was actually "Newbie" at the time.
Socom invented many of the modern day gaming things that we still use.
And the clan system and community was the absolute best of all time.
I also had to make an account to leave a comment on this. i was unaware that socom still had such a following. i like apparently many others would love to see a SUCCESSFUL remake that captured what the original socom games where about. (sidenote: the term nube was definitely created by socom players, glad you said that) every now and then i get a ridiculous craving for that game and last year actually bought a ps2 and all of them just to play them again. i would love to be able to play them online. but i also really loved the the single player mode, it required meticulous planning and patience. so did the online. i would pay like 80 dollars just for a remake and i may be part of a small percent of people who would do that but we do exist. i am shocked there has not be a remastered one yet. virtually the only reason i ever click on playstation store is to check for it. the developers screwed up big time when they took it in the direction of that fps crap (and i play fps all the time, hard core destiny player with countless hours on trials) but when you get down to it i like many others had their love for gaming created solely by playing socom. people in some forums compare rainbow six to socom....it is nothing like socom. no game to date is anything like socom. and i can appreciate the following that cs go has some of my buddies play it but it isnt for me. im not sure what sony has against remastering the old ones at a very minimum im certain they would sell, very well, but now that i know that the socom community still exists i will support it. and dont hate on h hour, the idea was cool but to be honest they should have literally just copied the mechanics and gameplay of the old socoms. and to be fair cs go movement, to this day, does not compete with with even socom 2's movement. it was very smooth all the time and to be honest i dont play a lot of games with mechanics as good as that game still today. and i play a ton of games.
woops typo there lol tbh i play a lot of games.
IWOULD ABSOULUTLY LOVE A REMAKE PRO GAMER RIGHT HERE LOL JK I MISS THIS GAME YALL I EVEN KEPT PLAYIN WHEN THEY DROPPED THE SERVERS ORGINAL GAMER DrizZyDrake
All i Have to Play Now is Rainbow Seige
SOCOM IS AND WILL FOREVER BE KING OF GAMES
