We all knew it was coming, and now it's been confirmed: Dragon Quest XI is in development for PlayStation 4. During the franchise's live Japanese presentation, we got a look at some gameplay, although it's safe to say that we saw an early build of the game.
Showing off a large, open town and some gorgeous wilderness, it certainly looked like new-gen Dragon Quest title, but there aren't too many details to go on just yet. What we do know, however, is that it's being developed on Unreal Engine 4, and it's being crafted by a team at Square Enix.
The game's also coming to 3DS, which makes the whole situation rather strange, but it seems as though the two different versions are being created separately - there are obviously no ports here.

let's hope we actually get this one
The decision to release on both PS4 and 3DS is brilliant for a game like this.
Yes excellent news cannot wait.
Huge news for PS4 in Japan.
Wellicht give us the game in Europe pas and not that digital crap.
Is this PS4 exclusive ?
@stevie85 No, its also actually the first game announced for the Nintendo NX.
As well as Dragon Quest X.
@MAntonioLimon Gematsu seems to be backing away from the NX announcement. Here's what the press release apparently says: "Additionally, we are also considering launching on Nintendo’s in development NX platform."
I think it's pretty likely it'll be coming to the console, but doesn't appear to be 100% confirmed yet.
Really looking forward to this. Ps Vita lately revived the jRpg fever in me
@get2sammyb even if they are just "intentions" this clearly mean that WiiU is dead and buried.... otherwise they would have announced something for that platform too...
@arnoldlayne83 Yeah, I guess. I think the writing was on the wall at E3, though, to be honest. Pretty crazy to see the system fade away so fast, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the NX is.
@get2sammyb Yes I agree. I really fear that NX will be another gimmicky fest from N. The voices that is barely powerful as PS4 and Xbox is not a good news, imho. If I have to bet some money, I would say it is a sort of Android machine or similar.
Maybe I am too negative, but I fear it will be the Dreamcast of Nintendo...
IS IT MY BIRTHDAY WHY DIDNT I KNOW I WOULD BE GETTING PRESENTS WEEEEE
@arnoldlayne83 I know that people started rumours of the NX running on Android OS but Nintendo has already confirmed at this point that it is not running with android.
s-weeet
I'm pretty sure this will come out for NX too. But I think they haven't mentioned it because they can't talk about it.
What a perfect day in gaming news
And guess what people. When if it doesn't cone out in English, I think it will but still, you can import it for PS4, no region lock unlike the 3DS.
Can't really get excited until localization is announced, if ever.
I hope the alchemy pot makes a return.
This will boost PS4 sales in Japan.
If his hair was light purple, I would've mistaken him for Trunks. Btw, is he a story character or do we get to create our own?
@WanderingBullet I first thought that he was custom created, but I think he's actually the main character, as they showed artwork of him during the presentation.
Great it's coming to ps4, now we need a localization announcement so we get it.
It's really weird that Dragon quest x and xi are coming to NX, already a good start to a console no one knows nothin about. However, no matter what games they announce for the system, I have no faith in Nintendo anymore and won't get it
@hYdeks
Oh I will.
I have 100% faith in them. Been playing tier games for 20+ years and they're still just as fun as they ever were.
They never stopped making fun games, which, as a person who enjoys playing video games, is really the only thing I care about
@ShogunRok Thanks again for the info.
Damn! Woke up at 2:00am out here (curse my damn internal clock for knowing when the announcement was.......), thanks @get2sammyb for the stream! The PS4 version looks drop dead gorgeous, but as a HandheldGuru at heart...the 3DS....I need it...wowza. It looks sooooooooooooooo awesome! A 2D SNES Style RPG on the Touch Screen.....and that little touch with the D-Pad battle screen...wow. That is so cool! Both have a distinct and really pretty art style. I need it. Like now. You win this time though Sammy, we'll get the PS4 version in the west...but no 3DS version. Ugh, why can't Enix and Ninty get there act together bring the west some 3DS DQ goodies...there are like ten DQ's now that we won't get. And I would buy them all!!!! Hm...It might be high time to learn Japanese and import a New 3DS (with some faceplates) and grab box of all the JP DQ's that I need.
But Back to DQXI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hype!!!!!!! It's a good day to be a Nintendo and Sony Fan!!!!! Now lets hope they both come westward!!!
This is the ship I hate about revealing info in advance, they say, home console exclusive so NX and PS4 seems fine, but why 3DS? Makes me angry, now the game will be watered down.
@NomNom No reason to be angry. They will be completely different beasts:
"The game's also coming to 3DS, which makes the whole situation rather strange, but it seems as though the two different versions are being created separately - there are obviously no ports here."
Take a closer read at the news and watch the videos, how one version shapes out will have no effect on the other.
@fchinaski They are always connected. Even if the version is done by a different studio, the general direction will be the same. Meaning, the scope could very likely be equal.
@NomNom Yep, @fchinaski is right. They'll apparently have the same storyline, but the 3DS version runs on a completely different engine, for obvious reasons. I suppose it's a little bit like the Ni No Kuni situation.
@NomNom Though I can definitely see what you're saying. It'll be interesting to see how they develop separately for sure, although I doubt we'll hear anything for a while yet.
@NomNom I think it's fascinating, I will love to play both if/when they come out on the West. And don't worry, DQ games never needed to rely on horsepower to be very deep, engaging and have a broad scope — I sincerely doubt the 3DS version will impact the scope of the PS4 version!
My hype for this right now is way too high, this game shot miles ahead of my excitement even for Final Fantasy XV solely based on this announcement!
This is great news. We might actually get another Dragon Quest worthy of following on from DQVIII now. The 3DS part is a bit worrying since it's another example of this non-committal approach to the current gen. I get that they don't want their game to sink by tying it to current gen exclusively, but they also won't wean Japanese gamers off older machines if they keep putting games on the PS3 and 3DS as well. However, since the 3DS can't even do DQVIII as well as the PS2 did, the 3DS version of XI is going to be so terrible by comparison, or else be pretty much an entirely different game, that it hopefully won't have the effect of keeping Japanese gamers from moving onto the PS4.
@arnoldlayne83 Well technically the Wii U is the Dreamcast of Nintendo since it sold even worse than that console. America has always propped up Nintendo financially, generally 50% of each Nintendo console has sold in North America alone meaning that every other country on Earth combined doesn't like Nintendo as much as just NA. The PS4 has already outsold the NES in Europe.
@FullbringIchigo We definitely will. If I remember correctly, there aren't even 2 million PS4s sold in Japan whereas there are over 21 million sold outside of Japan, at least 8 million in Europe.
Think about it, the only numbered DQ we didn't get in the last 19 years (the years since VI came out in Japan, though we did get it later as a DS remake) was X, the one on the Wii that was an MMO. Those two things alone are reason enough. The MMO market is much more contested and crowded in the West, and much more dominated by WoW. Games that don't have "Mario" in the title and weren't dancing or fitness games also sold like crap on the Wii, especially since it got abandoned by most of its owners after they got bored of Wii Fit.
Meanwhile this is on a very successful console in the West, particularly in the UK where it's the fastest selling console ever. We're getting Star Ocean 5, they obviously think the market is right. DQX was just an awful little blip, the least successful numbered DQ even in Japan and one they had to rush out on Wii U after it failed on the WIi, only to falter again because the Wii U was universally ignored.
@get2sammyb this will send Japanese ps4's flying off the shelf. We'll probably see it in the west around 2017 if we are lucky.
@ShogunRok - "Ni No Kuni situation"
Half the people here probably don't know it was a DS game first, you earn your badge today.
@WanderingBullet - That's funny, as soon as my kids saw it he said Android 17. Must be the cell shaded hair.
Really excited by this. Been wanting a good JRPG lately. Although the last Dragon Quest game I played was IV on NES.
North American release and pre-release demo, please.
The game looks gorgeous in the Unreal engine. I hope it comes West!
@rjejr Haha, nice but he reminded me of Trunks not only because of the hair but also of the sword - Android 17 doesn't carry a sword.
Huzzah, it's about time this game got announced !
Now if only I could get around to beating Dragon Quest VIII PS2.
Some more info 4 u all: "The game's full title is Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time, the producer is Saito Yosuke and Level 5 is involved with development in some capacity. The PS4 version (and presumably NX edition) runs on Unreal Engine 4, which means that the 3DS edition will be running on something else entirely, as Unreal 4 doesn't currently support the system." not sure if this right though
@WanderingBullet - Yeah, but my kids only 12, I had to explain to him what cell shading was, but I thought the DBZ comparison was interesting. And he's only watched thru season 3, so he doesn't really know Trunks. Not even sure how he knew Android 17 maybe the DBZ Sagas game on GameCube that he's played a lot.
@rjejr I see..
