Sony's first-party may have been underfire since the launch of the PlayStation 4, but it looks like its network of Worldwide Studios still has the Midas touch among critics – the Japanese giant walked away with no less than four Game Critics Awards at this year's E3, with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End scooping three of those on its own.
In fact, despite some consumers complaining about a lack of games for the new-gen machine, the system gobbled up a total of 12 gongs – almost double that of the Xbox One. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Fallout 4 won the coveted Best of Show award, but Naughty Dog's latest was named Best Console Game, Best Action/Adventure Game, and was also recognised for its graphical accomplishments.
Elsewhere, the excellent Horizon: Zero Dawn – which was also voted by you as Push Square's Game of the Show – took home Best Original Game, while No Man's Sky scooped up Best Independent Game. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Battlefront was voted Best Action Game, while reboot Need for Speed took podium position in the Best Racing Game category.
The one disappointment for Sony will be that Project Morpheus missed out on the Best Hardware award, with the Oculus Touch controller taking that. Still, all in all this will make for pleasant reading for the big wigs at SCE, as the Game Critics Awards are determined by the votes of 38 of the industry's biggest publications. We keep telling the organisers that Push Square should be the 39th outlet, but they've stopped returning our calls.

PS4 has no games.
@get2sammyb yeah
@get2sammyb
That's right no games just all the ones I want. I'm hoping for more no games in the future
All in all, a pretty great E3.
I wouldnt call 5 out of 15 "sweeping" the awards but 1/3rd sure as hell aint bad.
2016 is going to be a great year for Sony games.
Well my Best in Show went to Uncharted 4 and I certainly agree with Horizon: Zero Dawn taking the Best original game.
Between the two of these games, I think they could of taken pretty much all the awards...
Best Racing game - Uncharted 4 after the jeep sequence.
Best sports game - Horizon: Zero Dawn - hunting and archery are sports
Best Family game - Uncharted 4 - its already been shown to families.
etc etc
It's been said, but - best e3 evaaaa
And to think several years ago they were trying to wind the event down, pah!
@get2sammyb
To be fair, Uncharted 4 is a long ways off and Horizon probably even longer. The 'no games' stuff is nonsense because PS4 has third party support but there's still a lack of high quality exclusives that won't be remedied until 2016 when hopefully we get at least 3 out of Uncharted 4, Street Fighter V, Ratchet & Clank, Horizon and God of War.
On topic though, it was a great E3 for Sony and it's good to see Horizon generate some interest. I felt it got unfairly looked over because people couldn't stop creaming themselves over a boring looking re-introduction of a game announced years ago, a kickstarter funded sequel and a remake to one of the most overrated games of all-time.
@BertoFlyingFox Well, 12 of the games are on PS4, too.
@Gamer83 You misery!
@Gamer83
Hear, hear! Couldn't agree more with you about the last part. Although I must admit I am a Shenmue fan, it's hardly anything to get excited for in this state. Horizon, but also Dreams, are mentioned too little and once again hype wins it from actual games.
@get2sammyb
LOL. I'm sorry, I just couldn't get hyped for those games. That said, I'm happy for the people who wanted them and it does show, imo, the strength of what Sony had to offer that it was still a great show eventhough the announcements that got the most hype did nothing for me. It's just too bad the games I want are mostly a ways off but there are some big third party games and a couple X1 exclusives so I'm good for this holiday.
@Boerewors
That's what a lot of this market is about these days. Who can hype its products the best.
Agree with a lot of these choices.
Except Need For Speed. CLEARLY not enough media played Fast Racing Neo
@Gamer83
I'm not ashamed to admit I often times fall for these hypes as well. While watching Sony's e3 conference for example, I was actually cheering during the 3 big announcements waking everyone up. But the next day I started to think more about what they've actually shown me what benefits me as a PS gamer is this year and all hype was gone. I simply summed up what I'll be playing this year, with what controller I'll be playing and what old games I would fall back on and that gave such a huge contrast with what I felt: I'm ordering Halo, Forza, Gears, Rare Replay, I'm gonna play it with my new expensive controller and if I feel nostalgic I pop in one of my old 360 games.
This isn't meant to showcase that MS won or anything, PS still won in my experience because they gave a presentation that stole hearts all over the world. At MS HQ they must be scratching their heads at times when they have a pretty sweet line up and make BC happen, something that is quite the accomplishment, and Sony lets someone announce his kickstarter on their stage and the whole world goes crazy and starts throwing money at their screens.
So hype seems to be stronger than actual gameplay these days and even a gaming veteran like myself falls for it all of the time. I sometimes even realize it and decide to go with it anyway; you can say whatever you want, but the way they build anticipation is incredible and I had several games where I enjoyed the weeks before the launch far better than the actual game... but hype still managed to let me leave with an overall positive feeling.
@Boerewors
I can fall for the hype myself, that's why I don't get on a company when it hypes the hell out of stuff. If you have a product, talk it up. It's why I'm stunned Nintendo sits back and does nothing when it has, arguably, the best lineup of exclusives (I say arguably because while it has Wii U has the most, X1 has more that I've enjoyed).
MS is still good at generating hype as well, but I'll say a lot of its problems with Xbox One stem from one thing... First impressions. I'm sorry but whichever suit thought it was a good idea to try and introduce a $500, online-only console with forced Kinect is a straight-up f**king idiot. Just like it took a long time for Sony to rebound from E3 2006 and giant enemy crabs, massive damage, Riiiidge Raaacer! and five hundred and ninety-nine U.S. dollars, it will take MS a while to make people forget the dreadful Xbox One reveal and its E3 2013, no matter how stellar the game lineup and I'd say MS right now has the best, most well-balanced lineup, but that 'first date' man, it was bad.
When is the next Hot Shots Golf game coming out for PS4? Other than that, I still think that if you only own a PS4, there are a lot of games to look forward to this year. 2016 should look a lot better for them, and as I remembered, it took awhile for all of the great games to come for PS3 and even for PS2.
Look I know MS got a few things wrong at its launch E3 but lets be honest when it did launch, it wasn't that much more than a PS4 and Eye and as for online-only that got cancelled - I wonder if Sony quickly backtracked as a result. When the new UI launches with Win 10,I wonder how many people that bought a Kinect free or sold Kinect will regret that decision? Cortana only works with Kinect. I don't know if its just the first impression though as throughout its also had the whole resolution issue hanging over it. I know it can do 1080p/60fps and some games are identical on both PS4 and XB1 but there are a lot of games that also don't. The last 2 big games for example - the Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight are both 900p (although the Witcher has 'dynamic resolution' and will be 1080p sometimes). Not that resolution actually affects gameplay or the overall experience significantly.
As far as the rest of 2015 goes, As it stands at the moment, the games I am looking to buy are quite evenly split between both consoles - however I do think the games I intend to buy for the PS4 are offering more new experiences. On XB1, I am likely to get Rare Replay (basically a sample of my last 30 years in gaming but I doubt a lot will live up to the nostalgic memories I have), GoW (a remaster), Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4. Fallout 4 is my 4th choice for November so may not get purchased because of funds.
From a PS4 perspective I am likely to buy Mad Max, Uncharted: Nathan Drake (a remaster but has 3 of the best games), CoD:BO3 and SW:BF.
When I look back at E3 2015, for me MS's conference was very good. From the games perspective I think it delivered here - a mix of old (Rare Replay, GoW) and new (Recore, Sea of Thieves, Fable Legends) as well as some fan favourites (Gears 4, Halo 5, Forza 6) and 3rd party games (Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider). But E3 isn't just about games and what it offered for the console and Hardware (Backwards Compatibility, New 'scuf' type controller and the Hololens Demo) was far more interesting than Sony's offerings here in my opinion.
On the PS4 side of things, I can't sat that a game 7+ years late, a remake of an 18yr old game I didn't like and a kickstarter for a Sega game sequel 14 years later impressed me. The new Media Molecule 'game' did nothing for me either. Its 3rd Party alliances looked good but the 2 stand-outs and lasting memories of E3 for me were Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4. Both of these blew me away and I basically have these two videos over-riding everything that came before or after.
I was here on the night of the Sony conference and whilst Sammy nearly lost the plot over the old games,others going mental about them too, all that mattered to me was Horizon and then Uncharted 4 video played! As good as the 2015 line up is, 2016 can't get here soon enough for those 2!
Could Persona 5 have won best RPG if was at E3 2015?
@WanderingBullet I think that award should have gone to Horizon: Zero Dawn...
@BAMozzy Totally forgot that Horizon: Zero Dawn an RPG as well. However, its too early to tell - Guerrilla are good when it comes to creating stunning visuals but this is a new genre for them. Atlus have proven that they can make great RPG games based on their previous Persona installments - Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden.
@WanderingBullet Personally I have no interest in Persona but regardless it wasn't at E3. Guerilla may have no experience of RPG's themselves but they have recruited the lead writer of Fallout: New Vegas and members of CD Projekt Red. The combination looks to have created a very beautiful looking game and the experience of the new recruits deliver on the RPG elements too.
@BAMozzy Good point. Anyways, both UC4 and Horizon were my favorites during E3 so regardless whether it turns out to be a good RPG or not - I'll still buy it day-one simply because of the concept and the gameplay they showed during E3. Would definitely like to see the RPG elements of the game though since they only showed the stealth and action side of the game so far.
@WanderingBullet They were certainly my top 2 favourites of E3 and that includes all the other conferences - not just from Sony's. I already have Uncharted 4 on pre-order and no doubt will buy Horizon on day 1 too.
Even if it wasn't an RPG, the concept and game play had enough elements to grab my interest and the visuals looked incredible and just added to my enthusiasm. I am glad they didn't delve too much into the RPG elements on its debut and just let the game-play, action, visuals do the talking. You don't need to see all the 'menu's', inventory, crafting etc at this stage although I can't wait to find out more.
