Social media erupted last night during a Distant Worlds concert featuring Final Fantasy XII composer Hitoshi Sakimoto. Speaking during the event introductions, conductor Arnie Roth said that a "remake" of the aforementioned PlayStation 2 favourite is on the way – although it's likely that he meant to say "remaster".
Indeed, this is something that publisher Square Enix has been hinting at for a while. "Actually, not limited to just Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, we're currently thinking of setting [a way] to have other past Final Fantasy titles playable on the PS4," producer Shinji Hashimoto said late last year. "However, this does not mean that we can simply transfer [these titles] to the PS4, so, as content holders, we must prepare a way to steadily have them available to play on the PS4."
We're not entirely sure how privy Roth would be to the Japanese company's private plans, but a Final Fantasy XII remaster does make a lot of sense. We'll try to chase up some kind of comment from Square Enix, but if this is real, you should probably expect some kind of announcement at the Tokyo Game Show later in the year.

Any great PS2 game upscaled is fine by me.
FF12 was a great Monster Hunter type game, spent over 100 hours doing missions, and the 3D rendered world was nice, but I really can't tell you much about the story. Is that the game w/ the blue furry big guy w/ the broken horn?
Though to be fair, after Wakka and the story in 10 it had no where to go but down. Also why I'm not looking forward to the story in Xenoblade Chronicles X that much as I just finished XC and it was awesome. No where to go but down. It's still my most wanted game this holiday for the world exploration, graphics and mechs, just not expecting any memorable story or characters as good as Reyn and Rikki.
So I might get an FF12 remake for the graphics and MH misdions, on sale for $20, but probably I'd just skip it. I would encourage my kids to play it though.
This is how much I know about Final Fantasy XII:
Never could get into FF12, think I played it for 20-30 hours. Would be up for giving it another go though. Cant think of a single memorable song in it, mind you.
Not my favourite title in the series but I would also want to give it a try again.
Yes! Please! It's my favorite FF!
@rjejr Respect for your avatar R.I.P.
@rjejr No your thinking about Kimhari from Final Fantasy 10. 12 had Vaan, Panelo, Balthier and co. It was good but will look terrible compared to better games since - mass effect etc. Oh god ive got visions of type o hitting me in the head - worst graphics this gen.
I was 100 hours into the game and tried to finish up some side quests right before beating the game, and my ps2 and memory card was stolen. It wasn't my favorite ff but I tried to replay it anyway and just couldn't.
In many ways it was a drastic departure from the norm of the main series in terms of gameplay, but I loved it. Gabranth is still one of my favourite Final Fantasy antagonists.
I really enjoyed ff12. Felt new and different when it released. Would love to play it again
Didn't really like FF12....I finished it, but the story and characters were just weak and bland...just never really grabbed me, at any point.
I wouldn't mind it. I've only seen it in a game store once while accompanying someone and I didn't have my wallet on me. Now I can't find it anywhere. So a PS4 port would be a nice way to try it.
Loved Final Fantasy 12 storyline wasn't the best ever! Vaan was abit annoying, but the game play felt so innovative and loved experimenting with the Gambit system! And let's not forget it has one of the best supporting characters in a final fantasy game; Balthier! Now that guy deserved a spin off!! Have fond memories of this game, and would love to replay it with updated graphics!
Hated 12 when i first played it. Absolutely hated it. Played again a year later, scratching my head as to why i hated it. 2nd playthrough was an absolute blast, would be highly up for this ons ps4. Replayed it last year on my ps2 aha.
Final Fantasy 12 without a shadow of a doubt has the best use of ye olde English in a final fantasy game ever.
Final Fantasy 12 is easily my favourite of the Final Fantasy games (Final Fantasies?) on the PS2; and I'd happily purchase it yet again, especially with the level of work and care Square-Enix generally puts into its HD Remasters. While we're on that note, the oft-rumoured Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 PS4 releases would be pretty nice, too, I'd double-dip on those just so I didn't have to dust off a dualshock 3 to play them.
*#&+ing YES. GIVE IT TO ME RIGHT +£@%ING NOW! Gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme
Yes Please!!!!
@themcnoisy Well then I really don't remember anything about 12. There was a good cut scene in the middle, girl falling off a tower on her wedding day, and going up and down a mountainside, and some oil tanks in a desert. Besides that it's all monster hunter.
I would prefer it on Vita, but if its only on PS4(and Xbox One), I'll just buy it for PS4.
Lets just hope its not gonna another two years before its released
Loved FF XII on PS2, though I actually never finished it.
Spent too much time hunting monsters and not finishing quests.
Only thing I hated about it was that characters did not feel distinct in battle.
Using the grid you could make everyone the same and do something silly like have everyone run the best gun currently available.
I just hope if they do a remaster that they use the Japanese International Edition with the Zodiac Job System, where each character has to pick a class.
It does seem a bit limiting, but more interesting over all.
They should also put more emphasis on the summons or "espers" and make sure you know when and how to unlock them.
That and quickenings, which actually took a long time to discover if you didn't know how to get them.
I really hope this is more than just rumours, FFXII is my favourite Final Fantasy game. The voice acting is superb and it has the best combat system in the entire series in my opinion.
The whole game feels like one big adventure for Vaan (and the player) and that's probably why I love it so much.
I would love to see that, as FFXII is one of my favorites on the whole series. The gambit system is a work of genius, but I would like to see minor tweaks on it if this ever comes to life, such as autodisabling steal when your opponent has nothing to steal anymore; that was specially annoying since so much of the game depends on loot.
I distinctly remember them saying this would happen if the X/X-2 collection was successful, so this is good, albeit unsurprising news. Will only get it if it puts an appearance in on Vita though tbh.
And @rjejr the mountain and that wedding cutscene are also both from X haha.
They've announced FFXII: Remake not so long ago, both FFXV and KH3 are still not yet done and now Square Enix's planning for another remaster/remake?
@SteveButler2210 - "the mountain and that wedding cutscene are also both from X"
Seriously? Maybe I didn't play 12 after all? No, I distinctly remember hunting monsters for hours on end. I remember constantly joking w/ my wife they shoudln't have called it FF12, they should have called it FF:Monster Hunter, dropped the entire main story lien and just made it a spin-off, only so much better than FF10-2, the 2nd worst FF I ever played. FF:CC:TCB on Wii is the worst. It really shouldn' teven count as an FF game, it wasn't even really a JRPG, too western.
This has already been confirmed to be false. The man misspoke apparently. I believe he was referring to a remake of the music maybe. Either way he himself has already came out and stated that it is not happening.
Sorry to deflate any hopes.
@SonyInfinity You didn't deflate my hopes, you outright burst them.
I am right there with you man.
Fantastic game! I played it for years on my backwards comopatible PS3 until that croaked. I would love to play it again. The side missions were so much fun that it got to the point where I didn't bother with the story. It never got old for me. I'm beyond excited for any news of it coming to the PS4.
