EA Games could have restricted the Star Wars Battlefront beta to practicing Jedis only, and it would have resulted in some hurried census updates. But the publisher has resisted temptation, revealing that the online stress test will eventually be available to everyone. This means that you'll be able to hop online for free and put the title through its paces prior to launch – though presumably you'll need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to participate.
There's no specific release date set for the sampler just yet, but we do know that it's due in October. Whenever it arrives, we suspect that Sony will have several fire extinguishers pointed at the PlayStation Network servers just in case.
One thing that we do know is that the test will include two modes and maps: Walker Assault on Hoth and Drop Zone on Sullust. There will be an offline option as well, in the form of a Survival Mission set on Tatooine. You'll be able to play that alone, or in local or online co-op. The question is: will you be downloading the client when it's made available? Feel the force in the comments section below.

No pre-order push? No social network initiative? No mailing list drive? What is this?!
@get2sammyb and EA dropping micro transactions for NFS. Something is going down over there it seems all too good to be true. But I know for sure that I'm looking forward to trying out the Beta! Bring on some STARWARS!
Sweet. I can't wait to play it. I have an idea of the motive though. I think they want to prepare for the server stress of launch day, and this is to help gauge it.
@Jaz007 Yeah, I think you're right. So used to betas being disguised marketing tools, though, it feels weird for one to be used properly!
Yes please, I need to see how it stacks up as a Battlefront title..
@get2sammyb ea is changing back into there old self's witch is good
I don't see myself buying this game, but I may try out the beta if I have time
I was in two minds about buying this game so trying the beta will really help me make up my mind. I hate beta tests tied to preorders so this is a good move.
I'll try it, don't expect to buy it though.
Will be playing that offline Survival Mission set on Tatooine. Its also pretty cool that it has both local and online co-op.
Really hope this beta doesn't come out the same day as MGO.
local co-op too? Well that's a pretty sweet demo.
@SKC_Diamond I wouldn't go that far, it's more likely a simple case of knowing how huge this game is going to be on release, so they quite literally can't afford not to have an open beta. Otherwise we'd more likely than not end up with a Driveclub-esque fiasco, smouldering servers and all!
@thecrazygaijin You know what's happening? EA isn't buying CD Projekt Red, CD Projekt Red is buying EA
There's no way I would buy this without playing it first, so this is a smart move (wait...smart move? EA?!). I really want to love this game but as the old saying goes: "I've got a bad feeling about this."
Already bought it, so I almost want to just wait! But I'll probably dip a toe in the beta
