Destiny: The Taken King is out and fans of Bungie's shooter have probably spent their last weekend grinding themselves into dust. If internet reactions are anything to go by, then the game's third and biggest expansion has been met with a reasonably positive reception. Veteran players seem to like the changes, and lapsed Guardians are telling tales of how they fell in love with the loot all over again.
Yesterday, we published our review of the release, which you can read through here. The short version is that we reckon Destiny is currently the best that it's ever been, and that's a promising sign for the property. However, just because we really like The Taken King doesn't mean that you have to - that's why we've slapped this poll together to find out what you lot think.
So, has The Taken King got you back into Destiny, or is it still not enough? Cast your vote, and then tell us your reasoning in the comments section below.

its a mess still to buy anything good you can only use legendary money and for most people that means 15 points a day because there light is not high enough except for the rift game and thats only once a day . Also the story is a joke are they kidding indie tablet games have better story's it ends in what 2 missions it feels like and what 1 cut scene at the start and and lame one at the end . Also rare weapons and Armour that are dropping are miles ahead of any legendary junk now its a joke . Also they lied again saying they fixed the reward system LOL BS in 3 days i went 8 games straight on the first day with no reward on the second day 5 games and 8 again on the 3rd (crucible). These devs are truly slow and horrible at doing there job because the game is a bloody mess and with all there lies from there videos before the original launch and now here with taken king its insane that people let this garbae slide and act like its a good game .
Gotta give it a 9/10 for me, never really stopped playing. As I said before, not sure I could recommend it to everybody though as it's clearly pretty polarising - if you got a few spare bank notes and are at a loss give it a go, you might end up loving it!
Also what type of wannabe gamer would give this game that is bugged and lied to us and ripped us off at every turn a 9/10 . If your one of those people stop gaming your going to destroy gaming for us real gamers by supporting junk like this and calling it a 9. WAIT unless you clowns meant 9/100 then thats perfect score
@godslayer1975 Why'd you wanna buy the legendary stuff without having higher light? The greens and blues will do you just fine until your character is at the right level. If you mean its a mess because you can't log on and have access to all the great stuff day one you may be missing the point! In terms of the blues and greens being higher than the legendary stuff, you are meant to use this stuff to infuse the year two legendary/exotic gear, since it has better perks. I think you're not really getting the changes.
I feel the game is vastly improved. It is how it should have been at launch last year. I enjoy the increase vault space and more to do. However I hope they will offer more areas to explore on each planet, more planet's (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) and moon (Titan), reef large asteroids to explore. Also allow us to have our own personal space to decorate and customize like Phantasy Star Universe or PS Home.
Cheers!
I would never pay £40 for 3 hours of content :/
No, it's made me abandon it actually. I can't download a 20 GB patch AFTER buying the disc
@benrawr I have played 3 hrs per day (some days more) since Sep 15th, and I am nowhere near being done with new content on my first character.
PS, I don't want to say you were trolling when you posted this, but clearly we knew how divisive the reaction would be
Too little too late.
I think that The Taken King is an awesome game.
The story is good, and I laughed at so many lines this time around. Grimoire provides an interesting way to dig deeper. Would they have put very long dialogues or cutscene in the missions, this would get old very quickly when you play and replay the missions. Instead, they opted for short dialogues that actually changes from time to time (I love "from from above" and "I live in your backpack" in the Rasputin strike).
The new quest system makes The Taken King closer to what many think (quests + grind + take on harder and harder challenges) when they think of a MMO.
If you take Destiny as a single-player FPS, you are missing out and you are going against the current here. Destiny was advertised as a MMO FPS, and is truly is. I play with my clan, and we use voice all the time. This is the one of the best kind of gaming I know. It is so close to playing with buddies in the living room and yelling "Watch out, there ANOTHER champion captain".
I love these intense, no, insane moments when the room is full of enemies, where the floor in on fire, where the walls are shooting rockets at you, when bosses are chasing you around and due to teamwork (and after a few wipes), you make it alive.
Honestly, I stopped playing it right when the huge update for the taken king came out. It's a good game, but I think it's stupid they just changed the voice of ghost to North, really took me right out of the game, that it was one day one voice, then the next when I had to redo the quest, it was some annoying voice. I'll get back into it, but I rather play other games right now.
@godslayer1975 I spend roughly 200 quid a month on games, I've been playing for over 30 years.
This type of "wannabe" gamer is playing the hell put of Destiny and loving it.
Take your misguided generalisations elsewhere.
@godslayer1975 Listen, a lot of people like this game. My clan mates and I are having a blast, so is pretty much every other player. If you don't like the game, that's up to you and we respect that. However, relax a bit and talk like an adult because right now you sure look like an idiot.
@hYdeks My first impressions of the new ghost were mixed. But I'm sold after TTK. Also, it does make sense to redo all the voicework, otherwise whenever you go back to playing the older story missions you'll hear a different voice. Seems Nolan is more readily available to record future voicework too so hopefully it'll give the sequels consistency. Hope you enjoy it if/when you try the expansion.
On a more positive note, the update has made it so a lot of rhe endgame content is entirely optional.
For example, I don't play crucible. It's a large part of the game, but does not detract from my experience at all.
If you're worried about not being able to afford legendary gear from vendors, then don't. The new cryptarch system means that any engram drops will usually be better than your current gear, meaning incremental progress and rewards are almost guaranteed.
Yes, the price point seems steep for the occasional player, but for many like myself the hundreds of hours of play we'll get from it is worth the cash.
@Johnnycide Yeah I agree with @godslayer1975, I'm not a real gamer. I mean I have in the last week played Destiny, MGS5, Tearaway, FFX, Virtues Last Reward, Bravely Default, Towerfall and, er...Frozen (not proud of that one) - but I'm not a real REAL gamer. I can dream though, right..?
Nah, I'm probably done with Destiny for good. The vanilla version left an awful taste in my mouth and the first two 'expansions' did nothing to change that.
@kyleforrester87 woah, easy there Captain Casual! Us wannabes can't keep up with the hardcore challenges posed by those mainstream and all too ubiquitous games. VLR especially!
/sarcasm.
Very much a marmite game. Really tried to get into it but couldn't.. even with the DLC. Tried the update and I can see why the new found love to be fair, but for me the ship has sailed.
Probably just as well, what with MGSV, Witcher 3, Batman and now PES 2016 on the go... Am blessed with the free time I have (as a Carer for missus and sports writer from home) but I don't think i can fit any more in!!
Anyhoo. To those that are cracking on with the new look Destiny.. enjoy...
I had such high hopes for this game last year. I really tried to get into it but I just found the game way too repititous and average for such a high profile release. I ended up trading it in after countless hours of trying to force myself to enjoy it. So at this point, nothing will get me back into it, especially not paid DLC.
@dellyrascal I can understand you. Destiny, is a good game, but is not the holy grail nor will it be fun for everyone.
I was an hardcore WoW player back then and I liked the raids. You know, getting 20 (or, ouch, 40) people together to defeat an insanely hard boss. Yeah, that was my thrill. And I get a bit of that back in Destiny.
Now, Destiny doesn't have a designated "tank" class or a "healer". Nonetheless, my friends and I play differently. I'm a Titan defender and often save the day by staying alive and bubble-reviving someone when I'm the last guardian standing. That feels awesome. Some of my friend are more DPS-oriented. Run about with shotguns or whatever they have in their hands. High-risk / high-reward play style.
But that's not for everyone. Not everyone likes to wipe three or four times on a heroic boss and finally killing it (or not, sometimes you have to call it a day).
And I understand those players. I'm not mad at all when someone says that Destiny is not for them and they'll switch to MGS or something else. To each their own, yeah?
£40 did seem a bit much at first but I personally will often spend more than that on a night out. So far I've played between 1-3 hours a night on destiny since TTK dropped and am loving all the new loot, just gotta get my light up so I can join my friends on the new raid
I am a professional Nerd and proud of it. I get paid well for it too
9/10 for me, I stopped playing just before the House of Wolves as I couldn't stand the grind. I could spend 10 to 15 hours and not even bother to pick up one of the very few engrams that dropped, whilst also realising that all the best loot was locked away behind the raids and as none of my friends played I still have little experience of. Now though there are plenty of drops and bosses finally have rewards for beating them. Also with the new upgrade system I find myself chasing after the blue engrams to see if I can use them to upgrade the few legandarys I've collected so far.
Not sure where this 3 hour content nonsense has come from, I've probably played it for 15 hours and not yet finished the story and then I believe many new quests open up. The price is a bit high considering how much day one players have spent so far but I can't say that I regret it and new players are getting a bargain.
Im really enjoying it as ive always enjoyed destiny...40quid is probably a bit steep but i shared it to my kids ps4 so...i dont smoke so paying 40 quid for a "game" is easily justifiable
It's good and all, but I currently can't be pulled away from MGS5 yet to get myself to finish the Taken King story missions so I can start earning legendary marks and getting the new gear so I can have enough light to raid eventually, and do the new Strike playlist.
It's redundant to keep saying that Destiny is the best it's ever been. Of course it is because they keep working on it and bringing out new expansions, so it accumulates more and more things to do and refinements of it's gameplay. It's the same when you read a review that says FIFA or Madden is the best it's ever been. Well, that's a surprise! Seeing as though there's hundreds of people working on iterating those title from one release to the next.
@Wesker oddly with FIFA etc it's my understanding that they don't neccesaarily get better every year!
Plus with Destiny the loot system for example has been reworked to replace the old one, not run in conjunction with, so it's a fair enough comment to say it's currently the best loot system. Of course I see your point when it comes to story missions etc as new ones have been added to compliment the old.
I like the changes, but it isn't enough to want me to buy this dlc at this time. But I do like how the game feels now, compared to before.
Aside from the debate, anyone fancy playing later tonigt? I'll be on around 11pm-2am BST. Love these late shifts!
@Johnnycide I can't hack past mid-night on a school night! Good finishing up the raid with you the other week though, if you remember. You seemed pretty battered.
@TheMightyPunram lol
@kyleforrester87 It's at least fairly redundant. I guess in they theory they could have released an expansion that made Destiny the worse it's ever been, but I would say the likelihood of that is very low. And in the main, sports franchises do get better, year in, year out. It's a fair comparison.
@kyleforrester87 yeah I was hammered. I'd gone on to throw some stuff in the tower and got the invite, but I'd been at a friends house for 10 hours with way too much merriment. Hilarity ensued. Embarrassment took over the next day. Got some decent loot tho!
To put it shortly, I think Destiny is definitely better with TTK and that Year 2 patch. More side quests provide more incentive to play and actually give some of the NPCs more character. The fact that leveling up now is influenced by all of your equipment and actions is more rewarding and fun (albeit easier). The cutscenes, dialogue, levels, and enemies in the TTK missions are much better than the vanilla content. And then there are all these other little things that help improve and streamline the experience, too. Yeah, overall Destiny (in it's current state) is an 8/10 for me. At launch? Probably a 6/10. But Bungie has made a lot of great improvements since then and if someone hasn't touched the game yet, you'd DEFINITELY get your money's worth with the Legendary Edition. Totally worth it.
I vowed i was done with destiny, even though my friends and i felt like ttk was going to give us more of what we imagined destiny would be. Then the day before launch a friend broke down and bought it, which in turn caused me to buy it, and a 3rd, and 4th, and before you knew it, our fledgling 20 man clan had all bought it after the majority had sworn it off. I must say its been phenominal, averaging 4-6hrs a night, ive only got one character through it, and did not finish the raid last night. First time i havent finished a raid launch week in destiny.
Well,i like how the music can be turned of now apparently -another thing that rarely gets a mention -no blood or gore? i'm still umming and arrhing a bit but not really convinced..I guess i'd have more fun if i wasn't so pedantic, but then theres a lot on my menu right now, need to get through some of that before Fallout 4 runs my life.Destiny TK is a legitimate game from what i've heard though.
Only Destiny could attract 43% of people to answer a poll on a game they've never played (as of midnight Weds 23rd September anyway)
Anyway, having played the original game and the new content, it's a 9/10 for me.
@special_donkey there's no gore purely because the weapons in the game either disinterate or burn enemies. You see the odd skeleton and some parts are quite creepy, but it's nothing you couldn't see on Doctor Who.
a 9 lol?? this game should've been like this for months. The last 2 DLC packs are still bloody ripoffs.
Taken King is only good new for new players.
No, and it never will.
And my reason isnt the game itself, which is fun and Im sure TTK added a few nice additions.
My reason, is Bungie/Activisions attitude towards it.
For example: "If you saw the emotes youd throw money at the screen", interesting, as I saw them and didnt buy, go figure.
The pricing system is an absolute joke, in comparison to similar games and what you revieve for said cost.
Destiny as a whole is THE most over-rated game ever made ever.
I honestly would not download the legendary edition even if it was free.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya That quote really has to be taken in context, and to know what kind of person the guy who said that is. He's actually pretty funny and sarcastic but comes across as genuine to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FmaU0D1TUg
TTK has made some improvements to the overall experience but its still essentially the same as before - not saying that as a negative. Its still difficult to assess exactly how much content this has offered as I haven't yet got to the end of all the quests. The Raid is bigger and certainly more complex, team orientated and certainly requires a lot of communication The new area (the dreadnought) is interesting, the new sub-classes are fun but the overall premise is still very much the same.
Personally I really enjoy the game play and think that the overall changes have improved upon the experience and expanded on the original premise rather than changed it.
@kyleforrester87 In context?
He made a public apology regarding it.
He may be as funny and sarcastic as ever, but to make such a bold statement in a public arena is a very bad idea.
That said, to me this applies to anyonenot just that Smith guy.
Between that and a terribly overpriced, in terms of content, buisness model Im out personally.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Yeah, in the context of who he is. I appreciate what you're saying and no doubt having Activision tied up in proceedings will make for some arguably unethical business practises but to be held to account over one statement seems a bit rough. I guess he's a game designer first, PR guy second.
@kyleforrester87 that was just an example. To be honest the whole Activision thing has always made me dubious anyway, and its likely more that than anything.
For me I quit playing when they blocked content because I did not want to buy the over priced DLC. However though if I get it now, I can get the full version (Base game + DLC + Taken King) for £40 I think (will have to check) but me being cheap I may wait for it to drop in price. From what I have read the Y2 update has fixed all the issues I had with it before. I understand that it is a MMO and grinding is key but what they wanted in the original game was just plain silly
@ZeD i don't think destiny is big enough to be an MMO IMO!
@TheMightyPunram maybe before the Taken King half the user base played while hating it, but that is probably not the case anymore.
The way drops and levelling work now is pleasing to most from the feedback I can gather. It is for some a bit confusing at first, because some people don't realize that the drops are based on your current light level. Once you understand that, and how infuse works, pretty much everyone is happy.
Let me explain. Before, pretty much everyone had the same 3-4 "builds". You wouldn't see anyone with that gun or that armor because it was deemed useless based on the light level it provided. It was kinda fixed with when they introduced the ability to raise a piece of armor to the max defense level.
Now, you can hold to any rare, legendary or exotic you like because of its properties. New drops will be based on your light level (some under, some above) and if you want to hold on a specific piece of armor or gun, you can.
If someone gets a pulse rifle he loves (for its abilities or aesthetic), he can feed to that pulse rifle new drops that are higher level but that he doesn't want (say, a hand cannon). By doing so, you can level from 190 light all the way to 300 with the same holding to the gear you like the most, scrapping newer (and higher) drop you don't like in order to improve your current gear.
In short, this means that you don't have to farm The 4th Horseman 20 times until it drops exactly with the properties and level you want/need. Once you have something and you like it, it will follow you for good. You continue the grind, but in order to improve your loved weapon, not in the vain hope of getting exactly what you want.
http://kotaku.com/destinys-leveling-system-is-finally-fixed-1732382345
10/10 for me. It's my fav game. So much to do to keep me busy.
@godslayer1975
Your comment makes me think you didn't finish the Taken King story and that you haven't done any of the quests. There is 4 hours of solid game play and about an hour of cutscenes for the story part alone. Factor in quests and it's more like 12 hours of new content. If you do the quests for Petra and Variks you'll get an exotic scout rifle. You just seen too impatient to work for the rewards and too eager to bash the game.
@TheMightyPunram Alot if it boils down to the way its priced.
I do not honestlt believe the content warrents the cost, considering for only a tenner more you can get a game like The Witcher 3, which has a hell of a lot more content.
If you enjoy it though, more power to you, at least theyre finally listening!
@shafedog247 All I would say is thats not alot of new gameplay for the price they are asking, considering all the prerequisites to even play TTK.
Its the same reason I personally dont buy into certain franchises, lack of content for the price.
That being said I havent played TTK, and have no desire to do so, and this is not a reflection of the game itself, but of the, in my own opinion, poor practice by the publisher regarding what value for money you get in comparison to other similar games.
Again, this is my own view and opinion, and is the reason I wont be returning.
