The battle for soccer supremacy is back on, with PES 2016: Pro Evolution Soccer wowing critics earlier in the month. FIFA 16 will, of course, outpace Konami's classic in the sales department, but can it beat it in the reviews, too? The answer, it would appear, is not quite – but this is an AGUERRRO-esque to-the-wire race. We've included a handful of the better appraisals from around the web for you to peruse below.
Polygon - 9/10
Sports video gaming is at its best when you're fighting your ass off and the miracle comes through. And when it does, no game rolls out the TNT like FIFA 16.
GameSpot - 9/10
FIFA 16 can be stubborn and stifling, but it feels gloriously new, and having to learn fresh strategies and nuances in a game series like this is an almost-forgotten pleasure.
Game Informer - 8.8/10
FIFA 16 isn't going to blow you away with any single feature. Instead, it falls back on its strong gameplay to provide a fresh experience.
Digital Spy - 4/5
FIFA 16 is undoubtedly an impressive beast of a game that's stuffed with official leagues and licenses, game modes and other little touches that add flavour to the match day experience. EA's noble quest for authenticity certainly has its benefits, but there are times when the slower pace and more deliberate build-up play takes the shine off what is, after all, a video game representation of the beautiful game.
IGN - 7.8/10
The complete package is as substantial as ever, and those who've acclimatised to FIFA's play style in recent years will likely consider it good enough. But in the face of much stronger competition, 'good enough' might not actually be good enough. With its biggest rival matching its dynamism and beating it for fluidity and responsiveness, EA Sports has work to do if FIFA is to regain its title as king of the digital sport.
Which footy foray will you be plumping up for this year? Have the stronger PES 2016 reviews convinced you to switch sides, or are the licenses too much to lose? Take a shot in the comments section below.

So true! It's incredible how a game about rocket fueled cars can make you feel the lovely sensation of actually kicking a ball yourself, something FIFA has never been able to. I'm playing PES now btw and PES actually brings that "feeling" back, that universal feeling that when you see a ball, you just wanna kick it. PES is really the real- football equivalent of Rocket League for me at the moment, with intuitive controls and the fun it brings.
That feeling you get in rocket league when you drive into a centered ball and hit it just how you like, that feeling is PES giving players again; you know you're playing a fine soccer game when every time you shoot a ball at goal you mumble "mmhhppfffff", as if you're striking the ball yourself.
If you like Rocket League btw, check out Headmaster, a PSVR game. That game is brilliant and will make you shout from sheer joy as well!
7.8 - Too much water!
The last football game I enjoyed was ISS Pro...not ISS Pro 98. When did Pro come out? 1996/1997? Can't believe it's been 20 years...
Kinda tempted to give pro evo a run for its money these days..
@kyleforrester87 funnily enough Fifa 96 was the last footie game I actually paid for. I always try before I buy both series in my brothers house and none have made me want to buy them since Fifa96. lol Funny that you mentioned that era also lol.
Pro Evo does look worth a nosey although I will try in the bro's first again b4 deciding lol
@TomKongPhooey Get your brother to send it on to me to try afterward!
@kyleforrester87 @TomKongPhooey
Although I must say the final game plays a tad better, there is a demo available on PSN, why not try it there? Just don't buy the PC version, it's really bad apparently.
@Boerewors Football games on a PC feels...oddly unnatural.
@kyleforrester87
That's how Konami must have felt when they decided to give PC players some sort of polished turd instead of the actual game. I wonder what went wrong there seeing the Fox Engine seems to scale so well. Maybe the piracy, which always is huge with football titles, made them believe it's better to give PC players some sort of a "legacy" version.
I remember playing FIFA 98 Road to the WC on my PC: we had a crappy keyboard so shooting with the space bar actually felt really good because I had to hit it real hard. That "feeling" I described earlier, that I also experienced during the PS2 era with PES, is totally back in this year's PES; when you line up for a shot and you hit the woodwork after a beautiful shot you almost feel as if you kicked the ball yourself!
Polygon - paid off
Gamespot - paid off
IGN - no bribe
FIFA is distinctly average this year. Can you have a good match yes, string a great goal together yes, feel fully in control no. Its the same as last gen except you cant slide tackle players off the ball and the use of licenses is better. That's it.
The email I just got from PlayStation kinda says it all, really. Subject line: Get ready for EA SPORTS™ FIFA 16, top up your wallet now!
That being said, it's been a few years since I bought a Fifa game and I do miss Ultimate Team. Sorely tempted by PES but I will take the plunge back into EA's pit. @Neolit is right, though: I have played more Rocket League than any other game since I got my PS4 and I am wondering how long it will be before I ditch Fifa for those lovable little Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars.
@AshMK got the same email even though I've it pre ordered and payed for :trollface:
