Sony's dumping Facebook functionality from the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation TV. The features will be fully terminated in January 2016, though various applications have already been removed from the PlayStation Store. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your understanding," a spokesperson said.
In truth, it's not an enormous loss, with the PS3 merely allowing you to irritatingly share Trophy data with your friends. We suppose that some of you may be using the Vita app to stalk your pals, but the handheld's web browser will still be an option. This all follows the removal of YouTube and Google Maps from the device, as it stumbles towards the end of its life.

Jam!
I personally don't want them wasting good money on apps like this. I'd rather it spent in game development
I wonder why Sony thought it was a good idea to make these Vita apps in the first place. It's not exactly a comfortable device for browsing Facebook or looking up directions.
I do occasionally use LiveTweet to tweet a screenshot, but nothing more.
@JeffreyG i think it was more for the Vita 3G Modle (that i have) so its got Phone like functionality honstly the FB App was most usefull for uploading stuff like screenshots to me.
@Volmun Yeah, that makes more sense, but it still doesn't seem very comfortable to use for your daily social networking to me. It was a cool idea, having a handheld that's always connected, but I don't think it was executed very well unfortunately.
I didn't need this article to tell me Sony disliked the vita.
What time is it?
IT'S TIME FOR SONY TO ANNOUNCE THEIR NEW PORTABLE DEVICE!!!
But still, the life the psvita had was way too short.
@darkswabber
Please no. Sony needs to focus on what its good at and that's home console gaming. The Vita was a great piece of hardware but Sony has utterly no clue of the handheld market. Just focus on PS4.
I used the facebook app on vita sometimes...
The Vita isn't even 3 years old is it. Sony are complete idiots when it comes to that system. There marketing has been far to weak for system that has so much potential. I just hope they do a better job with PSVR.
Did anybody use them? I only ever used it with PS4.
Seems odd to me. I find the Vita FB app is quicker and easier to use than the Android app on my phone.
Still, I guess they have traffic reports and metrics which tell them that it's not being used, and that's why they're giving it up.
Just out of curiosity, is the FB app on Vita actually made by Sony, or by FB themselves?
@darkswabber Sonys portable device will be Playstation Phones. The Z5 Premium has piqued my interest.
I never link my facebook to anything. All those false facts, the lad bible videos, closet racism and peoples selfies with their tops off. Grim.
As for the Vita, Its my loyal companion. Hopefully the store is continually updated with more old games. abandoned for weeks - it didn't even sniffle when I picked it back up yesterday. Geometry Wars 3 is superb! And Ridge Racer 4 on the go is possibly the best thing ever.
Not sure where the 'Vita is doomed' stuff comes from, but the Vita actually is healthier than ever before thanks to the stream of triple A games lately. I don't care that Sony won't develop first-party Vita games anymore. Other publishers and developers surely love the Vita.
Hey, I LIKE irritating friends with Trophy info! Seriously though, it's actually a useful social tool to help people keep up with what friends are playing. Granted, PS4 handles all that infinitely better, so I guess what they're really saying is that the old service is going out of style and not worth continuing. Fair enough, I suppose.
Good. Perhaps instead if Sony had spent less money and time on useless apps and focused those resources on advertising the console and developing more solid first party titles, maybe the Vita would've actually stood a fighting chance. Eh, it's too late now anyway...
My Vita is like a terminally family member right now; I love them but I know their days are numbered.
@WARDIE Actually it has been longer but not much, it came out 2012 in February here in the States, and Europe. Japan got it earlier the year earlier.
I love going back and reading these comments from almost 7 years ago. It shows how endured the upcoming fate of the Vita had been in place.
