Activision unveiled some pretty impressive statistics for Destiny: The Taken King last week, so it's no surprise to see the first-person semi-sequel shoot to the top of the UK sales charts. The game sold best on the PlayStation 4 β surprise, surprise β scooping up a whopping 57 per cent of the sales. However, the expansion could only manage 16 per cent of the original's launch numbers β though we suspect that a lot of people upgraded digitally.
Elsewhere, it was all change in third place with PES 2016: Pro Evolution Soccer kicking off in third. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain dropped all the way into fourth as a consequence, while Mad Max rounded out the top five. Grand Theft Auto V continued to prove its popularity in seventh, while Rugby League Live 3 entered in ninth on the back of World Cup fever. Until Dawn tumbled all the way down into 13th position.

I wonder how well Destiny runs on PS3/360?
@kyleforrester87 I remember the original Destiny holding up reasonably well, but I haven't seen anything of The Taken King on PS3. I imagine this will be the last year we see meaningful support for last-gen outside of sports games to be honest.
@get2sammyb I wouldn't have thought TTK requires any additional grunt to run since it's essentially the same as 1st year Destiny. It's not exactly the best looking game on current gen consoles but it does seem to run at a solid 30fps. I just wonder if they managed to get the consistent frame rate down on last gen machines as it's a big part of what makes the shooting feel right.
Are they still releasing COD's on last gen machines..? :S
@Neolit Haha, welcome back buddy Get TTK. It's lots of fun. It doesn't have to feel like you're joining a cult.
@kyleforrester87 I reckon TTK probably demands a bit more from consoles than vanilla Destiny. I mean, it's got loads of massive fights between two or three enemy factions at a time. I know a lot of what Destiny does is handled on the server side of things, but I can't imagine the PS3 version handling that much stuff - surely it's been stripped down to a degree? It'd be interesting to see PS4/PS3 side by side.
The dev specifically said the size of the old vault and similar restrictions were directly due to supporting ps3/360. Given the huge vault and things like16 bounties, quests, etc, I am betting the last gen suffers. Just a guess though.
I noticed Xbox exclusives keep on selling really well in the UK. Forza was out 3 days later than TTK, but still manages to come in at second place. GoW and Rare Replay did also sell better than one would expect with the huge lead PS4 has.
@ShogunRok yeah maybe you're right. Perhaps lower enemy counts and such. Would be interesting to see as you say.
@Mega-Gazz I can't believe the small vault size was down to last gen holding it back :s I guess if they said it there is some logic there, doesn't make sense to me though!
So how did it break the record for "day one" players if it was only 16% of the original launch? That beat cod then?
@Jambo4170 Typical Activision spiel but:
""...Destiny: The Taken King broke the record for the most downloaded day-one game in PlayStation history and set a new day-one franchise benchmark for both total players and peak online concurrency, surpassing the original Destiny launch day last September, which was itself the biggest new video game franchise launch in history,"
Basically it sounds like the vast majority of the sales were digital, as this article alludes to, and therefore not included in this chart. Makes sense though I guess, I bought year 1 physical but when digital for TTK.
@kyleforrester87 right i got destiny was the biggest new franchise launch, but this isn't a new franchise. Its dlc/expansion of a game. Basically, are they saying TTK actually outsold the likes of COD
@Jambo4170 Dunno. But it says new day-one franchise record, not day-one new franchise record. The former doesnt state it's a new franchise, only that its a franchise that's set a new sales record
It also says "in PlayStation history", COD was never as big on PS as it was Xbox, so I suspect it hasn't beaten COD outright across all platforms.
It's all a bit confusing. And pointless too, don't forget pointless.
How much more popular is Xbox One in the UK than the Wii U. Forza Motorsport 6 topping a Mario game is a pretty big deal.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah so basically meaningless marketing guff to over-compensate and hide the real numbers. 16% of original retail is a real number. I have over 450 hours in this and added more than 50+ solid players to my friends list from playing this game and i currently have about 4 people that actually bought and play it. Sorry im not trying to bitch, just work out the real numbers.
