If you can hear a kind of crackling noise, that's the sound of hell freezing over. The Witness was announced for the PlayStation 4 alongside the console itself, but almost three years later, it's finally ready for release. Braid developer Jonathan Blow has taken to the PlayStation Blog to confirm that the Myst-ical first-person puzzler will bring a bit of colour to the new-gen console from 26th January.
"We'll be very happy to get the game out into the world, because we've been working on it a long time," explained a rather honest Blow. "We originally thought that The Witness would be coming out toward the end of the PS4 launch window, but... There's just been a lot to do. I think that when the game is in your hands, you'll find it to be intricate and deep, and also unlike anything else that you have played."
According to the luminary, there's a good 80 or so hours of gameplay here, so it's not your typical blink-and-you'll-miss-it indie game. It's certainly not your average pixel art escapade either, as the trailer embedded below demonstrates. You'll see colourful gardens, terrifying caverns, and even the open seas. While it all looks impressive, though, we're yet to be convinced by the puzzles, which appear to revolve around drawing lines.
Then again, we suppose that Braid looked pretty darn basic in trailers, but it turned out to be a bit of a game design master class. As such, we're certainly not ruling this one out yet. In fact, we can't wait to learn more in the lead up to launch.

Am i awaited in Valhalla?
Btw is this digital only?
I'm so glad they took their time on this. You've only got one chance at a first impression.
This is actually one of my most anticipated releases. I can't wait to roam around the world they've created. I don't even care about the puzzles, I just want to be there.

Was No Man's Sky announced back then as well? Seems like we've been waiting for a date for that one forever as well. Unless it already came out and I missed it, I've been feeling that way about No Man's Sky for the past 18 months now.
Well I almost turned off the vid after 18 seconds b/c the thought of doing those stupid minigame puzzles for 80 hours gave me a headache, but I'm glad I kept watching. Made me feel like Link in Windwaker landed on the island in Jak and Daxter: The Precurosr Legacy. Might be worth a shot in a few years for $4.98, or PS+, whichever comes first.
@rjejr No Man's Sky was announced a bit later, I think. It's definitely been around forever as well, though!
@get2sammyb Hans't been anywhere for the past 6 weeks though, has it? And no date?
And before anybody else feels obligated to mention it, yes I know about the flood destroying all their stuff, but even Obama had to stop blaming Bush for everything after 5 or 6 years.
@get2sammyb Sammy the line puzzles are maps of parts of the world, judging by the video. It showed 6 or 7 puzzles then followed by what looked like 2 mazes with a wall slamming shut on the latter one.
This game is looking pretty special.
