Phwoar, September was a pretty great month for PlayStation gaming, and the internal staff vote to find a worthy winner of our Game of the Month crown was a tight affair indeed. We reckon that it's been the closest competition this year, and with more blockbuster releases looming on the horizon as we journey towards the holidays, we're contemplating how intense our eventual Game of the Year coverage is going to be. But let's not occupy ourselves with that madness just yet – for now, let's talk about September's best titles.
Bronze Trophy: Super Time Force Ultra
Indie games are a dime a dozen on PlayStation 4, but Super Time Force Ultra is one pixel party that you don't want to miss. The shooter, which sees a cast of crazy characters travel through different time periods in order to seemingly blow everything to pieces, was described as "one of the best indie releases on PS4" by reviewer Adam J. Ramsey, who awarded the game a stellar 9/10.
Silver Trophy: Destiny: The Taken King
Destiny is back with a vengeance for its second year on the market thanks to The Taken King – the sci-fi shooter's biggest expansion to date. Arguably transforming Bungie's divisive property into the great game that it should have always been, we stated that with this "expensive but excellent fix, it's clear that Destiny's darkest days are over". Guardians throughout the solar system danced all night long after seeing our 8/10 review.
Gold Trophy: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Big Boss' final tale of stealthy sacrifice offers up some of the best gameplay mechanics on the PlayStation 4. Of course, we'd expect no less from series creator Hideo Kojima and his talented team, and that's why reviewer Adam J. Ramsey wrote that "it rarely, if ever, becomes repetitive to play". Adam concluded his judgement by calling the game "a fitting, brutally brilliant finale to Hideo Kojima's beloved saga", before awarding it a 9/10.
Platinum Trophy: Tearaway Unfolded
Quickly becoming recognised as the absolute best game that nobody bloody bought, Tearaway Unfolded is no simple Vita-to-PS4 port; it's a fantastic, enhanced edition of Media Molecule's already superb papercrafted project that uses the console's features brilliantly well. Reviewed by editor Sammy Barker, he described the title as a game "so imaginative that you'll feel yourself wanting to applaud it at points". The ingenious little platformer glued a 9/10 to its face in our review.

Fully agree here. MGS V is excellent but not GOTY material, Tearaway Unfolded is a masterpiece
@Anchorsam_9 Shame no one bought it, eh? Eh? Eh? Eh? Eh?
The game that's so over looked it's not even on the poll. Mad Max...
Worst game this month boba clear mile is NHL 16.
An utter car crash of a game just full of bugs, glitches and an utterly unrewarding online experience that just smacks of microtransaction orientated whore of a game.
PLEASE stop selling EA exclusive licence rights and give hockey to another developer. 2K were miles better and the competition breeds a desire to make a product instead of long lived complaceny ring their consumers of £60 for the game and potentially £100's in "cards" that are non transferable to next year's iteration.
Don't buy it!!! You say?
I like hockey, there is NO other hockey video game.
Football has fifa and pes, why does hockey get left with the biggest video game slag left holding the deeds making their games?
Certainly the best 4 games of September 15, but different order for me, best to worst:
Destiny TTK
MGS5
Tearaway
Super Time Cops
Overall, the best month of PS4's life so far, for me!
@get2sammyb HOW CAN YOU GLOAT YOU MONSTER
Seriously Media Molecule are the most charming developers of all time
MGS V is bloody brilliant. This Tearaway must be epic.
@Splat Hell yes, that game is so fun. Got a bit of stick for being a bit "unimaginative" but I love it!
@themcnoisy It's one of the best Vita games and one of the best ports ever
@themcnoisy Really, I'd struggle to recommend Tearaway over MGS5.. It's very easy, for one, but it is for kids. That said, Like Journey, it's the kind of game you should experience. But don't go in expecting to have your mind blown because it ain't gunna happen.
My advice is get it for Christmas and sit back and enjoy it on Christmas Day with the companion app - it's pretty magic. It's like watching a good Pixar movie, I guess. It looks stunning on the big screen, too.
@get2sammyb I bought it! The ending almost bought a tear to my eye, not ashamed.
@kyleforrester87 I'd probably swap MGSV and Destiny purely on the basis that it's not an entirely new game, even if I have spent more time on Destiny recently.
Played Tearaway on Vita and really enjoyed it but I wouldn't have put it anywhere near the top of the list. Best month so far possibly until November
Tearaway was great on Vita and well worth double dipping on ps4; there's so much new content it feels like its own game. The creativity is simply stunning, the gameplay beautifully relaxing, but crafting on the touch pad is awful. It's definitely worth using the playstation app.
And I have to disagree that's its solely for kids. It has a childlike charm but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable for all ages. Either that or I'm a big kid, which is fine by me!
Come on people. If you haven't got out there and bought yourself a copy of Tearaway go and do it now! It's superb.
We need to support quality games and creativity...
Yeah, Tearaway definitely isn't a kids game. I'd say both Metal Gear and Tearaway are game design masterclasses.
@Mergatro1d @get2sammyb Yeah, sorry I don't mean that it's a kid's game soley for kids, but it is designed for children to be able to play, and as a result it's not really challenging. I think we can all agree it would be better for us bigger kids if the platforming was a little more challenging and the enemy encounters slightly more taxing.
Take Fez, for example. It's a charming game where you have to find 32 cubes, the platforming is generally straight forward and you can't die. But then it has the hidden 32 cubes that are very complicated to find and the interesting back story that wouldn't be apparent to a child.
I guess I'd just have liked a bit more of this complexity in Tearaway, a challenge that was there if you wanted it, so to speak.
But, whatever, it's a great game as is.
@kyleforrester87 yeah it's not exactly challenging and I agree it would be even better if there were more taxing parts.
No SOMA love?
@iDangerMouse_ there's a demo available which is well worth checking out
After reading Tearaway is crowned king of September I thought the comment section would be an outright massacre...
For some reason people are calm or even agree. I like this community for not trashing the editorial staff for being completely and utterly WROOOONNNGGG!!! ohmagerd!!!
@DESS-M-8 That's how I feel about (American) Football games. I hate Madden games but I want to get a football game with a current roster instead of playing with one that's 15 years old. But due to corporate greed what are you going to do?
There's one or two glaring flaws in MGS V which I'm not going to discuss (due to spoilers), so I'd say it deserves second place.
Tearaway isn't my kind of game, but from what I've seen and heard it's superb.
That and this has reminded me, I really need to play STFU at some point.
I love tearaway on the vita. That is one game to get on the PS4 Also ratchet too.
I dunno. Tearaway on Vita was one of very few great games based around hardware gimmicks, and the PS4 version loses a lot in translation with the more limited controller. Tapping the back touch to activate the drumskins is way more satisfying than pressing the touch pad for some reason.
I'd have put MGS V at the top followed by Tearaway, Mad Max and then Super Time Force Ultra, but it's still a great list. A massive shame going to the system with the larger userbase did nothing for Tearaway sales but the game also had zero advertising and really didn't have much of a chance coming out the same month as stuff like MGS V, Mad Max, Destiny: The Taken King, Fifa, NBA 2K, etc. An exclusive like Mario, Zelda, God of War, Uncharted, Halo or Gears can survive that kind of onslaught because they're all well-regarded series that will get advertising. Just like with the Vita release of Tearaway, Sony just threw out there. Did the same thing with Until Dawn, but lucked out that word of mouth helped sales for that.
I honestly think that the crowd tear away is aiming for is more into phone or tablet gaming. It is a great game, but overlooked because of how it looks and zero hype.
Tearaway is an excellent game but I already played it on the Vita, even got the platinum trophy in the end. So I'm not in any rush to get it again on the PS4. I'm sure it deserves first place though. It's Media Molecule, easily one of the best developers there is.
Will Super Meat Boy be in your poll for next month? New to PlayStation players despite technically being a 5 year old game. I think it should be, so excited to play it for the first time.
@LieutenantFatman If it turns out to be one of the best games on PlayStation this month, then sure.
We've changed the rules a bit when it comes to which games can actually be nominated for GOTM. In the past, we used to disqualify any titles that were remasters, for example. But now we feel it's best to just include everything, as that gives us more choice, and it better represents the consoles in question.
@ShogunRok Sounds like a good rule change. I think it will be in with a chance. SMB seems highly regarded by many. Quite a few very good looking games releasing this month mind you so who knows.
