It's the tenth anniversary of PlayStation 2 classic Shadow of the Colossus' launch today – but it's the Nintendo Entertainment System's big 30th birthday as well. Acknowledging the event, Sony posted a brief message on Twitter to celebrate the North American release of the House of Mario's iconic grey slab. "Dear NES," the organisation started, "Happy 30th, and thanks for paving the way."
While it never hit anywhere near as hard here in Europe, the NES single-handedly saved the US market from the great video game crash which occurred in 1983. It went on to sell about 60 million units worldwide, and gave birth to iconic series such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and many more. Popular PlayStation properties that debuted on the device included Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
Happy birthday, NES!

Great to see Sony showing respect like this... The nes paved the way for my love affair with gaming... Happy birthday indeed!
This started it all for me...
Where was our EU PS birthday sale. Thanks Sony.
The NES was the second games console I owned after the Atari 2600. I instantly fell in love with it. Some very fond memories indeed Can't believe its been 30 years.
@Splat Duck Hunt Loved the dog in that game. It also had clay pigeon shooting too. Happy days.
Yes indeed, happy anniversary Nintendo. No matter if you like Sony, Microsoft, Sega or whatever comapny they all owe their North American success to Nintendo.
Didn't the NES sell badly in Europe? Maybe that's why they didn't / or will not mark the date.
I'm in the US, just about every kid it seemed had a NES, it was a part of popular culture in the late 80's and early 90's.....I only remember seeing a Sega Master System once, around 95 or 96, and I was confused because I wasn't even aware of its existence (what! A Sega console before the Genesis).
That ps4 would be a very popular edition of it was released
Nice PS4. And 10 years since SOTC, too. Was thinking about the day I got this yesterday, funnily enough.
@sub12 We had the c64, spectrum and Amstrad in Europe. We got the better deal.
@sub12 it didn't do as well in the UK as the market was geared towards the home computers of the day.
Games for those sold for around 2 quid and we're found in newsagents etc, whereas you'd need to go to a toy shop to find Nintendo carts, and pay around 30 to 60 quid for them.
Needless to say, parents preferred to choose the former.
@Johnnycide @themcnoisy We got a C64 when I was maybe 5-6 and loved some of the games, but I didn't look back once we got a Master System then a Mega Drive
@sub12 Yeah, it didn't do great in Europe at all. In the early days of the Internet I was always surprised to hear people from America speak so fondly of the NES as I'd only ever seen one in the flesh. It's only much more recently that I've learned how important it was in the US.
But yeah, I believe it only sold 8 or so million units outside of Japan and North America.
The NES is not quite my favorite console of all time (that honor goes to the SNES), but it was the first one I ever played and the first one I ever owned, and as such it'll always be unforgettable for me.
NES was my first console. Love it to death
@GlynCR
DecalGirl do a very similar looking vinyl skin?

Dont know how to embed images sorry..!
The Genesis and SNES were the consoles I'd say really made me a 'gamer' but it was the NES that introduced me to this industry and for that I'll always have fond memories of it. Super Mario Bros. was the first video game I ever played and Duck-Hunt was the first one I really got hooked on. I always think back to Christmas morning 1987. My grandparents got the NES for my uncle and the entire family gathered around the TV playing Mario and Duck-Hunt all day. Fun times.
Also nice to see this website acknowledge something Nintendo. Maybe it can shut up a few idiots who think the people here only care about PlayStation (because God forbid people who create a PS-specific website focus on PS).
@GlynCR The PS4 in the picture is wearing a skin by the looks of it. The one in @FaultyDroid 's link, no doubt. Thin black line around the white edges would suggest so.
@kyleforrester87 @FaultyDroid yeah saw it earlier on the CVGSC forum someone linked to an eBay selling of the skin still think it looks nice
Not sure if id risk skinning the console, but would definetely do my controllers.
I had no idea the NES wasn't popular in Europe. I just learned something. Well, happy b day NES, I good memories with this.
Now we just need more retro-styled games on PS4. How about a Castlevania clone? Something simpler than Bloodstained.
Everyone in Europe was playing Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy ,it really was a case almost of Mario who...? My avatar is 'THE' 80s gaming icon in Europe followed probably by an egg called Dizzy .
Happy to see the NES getting some love here - it's a good day when gamers can put down their differences and just enjoy gaming, period!
@GlynCR Go onto Amazon.com and look up PS4 skins...there is a skin that goes onto the PS4 (that same exact one)...I have it on mine.
Happy Birthday Nintendo! I remember buying my NES console, loved every minute of it and had so many fond memories and a lot of great games for it...playing games like Ducktales, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, Nightmare On Elm Street and Super Mario Bros 3 with my brother, and just many classic games that I got into like Goonies 2, Fester's Quest and Astyanax.
NES brought gaming to this world, something that the Atari almost destroyed, and it held it's own...just wish that the Wii U was as successful. Also, I keep on thinking on where nintendo would be to this day, if Sony was still apart of them...that would be an incredible console with so many instant classics!!!!
my NES was my life lol. i miss the little guy. i feel like going out and getting a WiiU now.
@get2sammyb
And to define irony: Nintendo of Europe treats their fans better than Nintendo of America. Europe gets more games, gets them sooner, and gets more special editions. The recent Fatal Frame mess highlights this. Europe gets a physical release and collector's edition, North America gets a censored digital-only afterthought.
@Gmork___
Get an actual NES instead.
