Ratchet & Clank looks so good in film form that it's hard to believe that it's taken this long for Sony to bring the platforming icons to the silver screen. This brand new trailer for the franchise's forthcoming flick has all of the ingredients that it needs to succeed: skittish jump cuts, on-the-nose gags, and a Galantis track. Alright, the narrator may sound like he's done the voice over for a million similar movies before, but this could be big.
Perhaps the best news for fans of the franchise is that it doesn't seem like it's straying too far from the source material. Alright, we see Ratchet seemingly sold on Captain Qwark's crap, and there's a brief glimpse of Doctor Nefarious, too – both tweaks to the story upon which this is based – but the smarmy sense of humour seems very similar to the main games. Considering that this series has been a little off the boil since A Crack in Time, this could be just what it needs to bring it back around.
The new game's bloody brilliant as well. Both are due out in April next year.

@WARDIE Loading for me, try refreshing the page.
I think everyone look's great but Dr. Nefarious. Maybe it's just me but he looked a bit off. That said can't wait for this.
@Splat Looks like he's not in his robot suit thing. I assume that will tie into the plot and presumably set up the possibility of the sequel.
Quite a good cast: Bella Thorne, Sly Stallone, etc. I just think it's going to succeed/fail based on how much marketing they put into it. I could definitely see it doing well, but the franchise is not big enough among the target audience for it to succeed without being plastered everywhere.
I can't wait (for both)
"Ratchet & Clank Could Be the Best Video Game Movie Ever"
I dunno. It's going to take a lot to beat Resident Evil 26.
I want to see this movie. And asteroid is a new word for ***.
@get2sammyb Tried that and it still is working for me. No worries. I guess I'll see it next April
@Splat Organic Nefarious looks off due to his organic form not being rendered in HD, same with Drek, and his organic form only actually appearing as still images in comic book form during R&C3. Only his later cybernetic converted form ever appears in HD, or fully rendered as a 3D object.
@get2sammyb Alright Sony nut. Time to kick your ass into gear, because you just got R&C info wrong around me.
It's not a suit. He is an actual robot. R&C3 established Qwark tried to give him a wedgie for old time's sake, knocking him into machinery in his base, that effectively converted his body into pure cybernetics, increasing his height and making him one hell of a badass. This obviously takes place before that moment. Or maybe it occurs through different means, who knows.
This looks okay for what it is but entirely off from the original storytelling.
Ratchet was not a boy scout in the original. He liked Captain Quark's radio show, yes, but he was a reluctant hero and kind of an ass.
@get2sammyb It'll Fail based on if Sony knows how to market their own IP which with this and other things not third party or Uncharted (Most marketing for Ratchet throughout the PS3 was done by Insomniac themselves ) is going to be bugger all let's call it a night.
I bought a PS4 for this game. One damn game. I don't care if the low price and silence from Sony screams budget release, this was a God damn system seller for me and many I know. They might not give a toss about whether or not this game succeeds but the fan Base however small despite being equal or greater to Uncharted in sales and reputation, and the developers clearly do.
Sony has burned me before. They even burned this series before and that shows no signs of stopping with the way they are none existently pushing this. They may be a business but they need to get their heads out of their asses no matter how deep in that pool of money they may be because now is the time to realise there is more than the few demographics they targeted since the late PS3, and they need to put their feet down if they want to really take out the competition. It just worries me that Sony might lose the concept of the other side of gaming and God forbid it might bite back one day.
Hell look at Tearaway. That game arrived silently. It was cartoons and light hearted and going for that other side of gaming and did it do well? No. I'm concerned Sony has grasped the concept of doing well then ballsing it up because they can't see the whole picture. Again, most likely because they follow one money trail and one money trail only.
I enjoyed the demo at GameStop
I'm looking forward to both the game and the movie. I'm not 100% sure it'll be a hit, but I hope it is. Could be a real kick in the pants needed for the franchise.
And admittedly, Bella Thorne being in this feels like my nerd fantasy coming true.
Don't care about the movie. Just make the game good.
@Volcanox
You and plenty of others like to come here and accuse the writers of this website, a PS-specific website, of operating in a 'PlayStation bubble' yet I see your posts and I get the impression that you operate in a 'me' bubble. You and people you know may buy the PS4 for R&C, the truth is you are a fraction of the fanbase. You can rag on Uncharted all you want, the games are all well rated and Uncharted 2 and 3 both sold 6 million+. Sales of the series are over 19 million, with four games including one that did about 1.5 mil on the Vita which has a pitifully small userbase. R&C with many more games is at 23 mil total, not a single game, not even one of the great PS2 releases has sold in the 6 mil range and the PS2 had a userbase of 150 mil. Bash Sony for it's marketing all you like but they're not missing any big picture. Hell even MS for all it's problem isn't missing anything. What does the market like? Sales suggest CoD, Halo, Gears, Forza, Assassin's Creed, Fifa, GTA,, to a lesser extent than those but still sizable among Sony exclusives is Uncharted... So naturally these are the games that will be advertised the heaviest. Would I like Sony to push some of its more family friendly games like Tearaway or Ratchet & Clank much better than it has? Absolutely but these companies only allocate so many dollars and it has to be to the games that are going to sell the most. Heck inFamous: Second Son, Bloodborne and Until Dawn, the three best PS4 exclusives were advertised for crap. The thing is, at least I see PS4 and Xbox One ads. Nintendo? I've never seen you even once criticize that company but talk about missing the big picture. No third party support whatsoever, no urgency to fix that issue, and at least here in the U.S. no advertising at all. If there is a company that needs to wake up it's that one. When MS, with all the backlash it got from the consumers that still goes on right now, can find a way to blow past the sales of a console on the market for one year longer and without any support from the entire region of Japan... It's the company that has that 10mil-selling console that needs to be taken a bit more to task. I don't even see advertisements for Super Mario games here. Not seeing the whole picture is a problem across the whole industry right now, but business is business and the money has to go where the biggest sellers are. I don't love it because I believe if you have a product you should advertise the hell out of it, but market reality is different. Sony and MS both have consoles with sales tracking ahead of their last-gen consoles and out-performing what market analysts suggested they'd be doing. So while there may be nonsense going, Sony must be getting something right.
Looks like a fun, but generic, kids movie. Even some minion type characters. Can see this doing well with a large amount of advertising. That being said, I don't think I could bring myself to watch it, but I will be buying the game.
@Gamer83 I Have criticised Nintendo. Just not here as often because you know...Playstation. Being honest I think their DLC practices are insane, I can't stand 3D Zelda nor do I care for Xenoblade because I don't have the time/interest and yes the lack of advertising is killing them. However at least they are consistent. Sony got so damn paranoid after The Order that Until Dawn was basically post release ads only.
I only watch Sky 1/BBC One and since only one of those has ads, I can say comparatively, I saw a lot more ads for Splatoon around release (Every ad break in fact) than I have for anything Uncharted. I'll explain a likely reason why.
If a company already has a decent market share (Sony in the EU for instance ) then the need to advertise falls. They can spend that money or a portion in another market to try and build it up, hence why throughout the late PS3 erase the US got all the good PSONE stuff. The UK at least is the smallest market for Nintendo and whileostomy it might bite them in the assignment they at least attempt to increase their share, though pulling out of the market is far more likely now.
As long as major competition doesn't spring up in the EU, Sony doesn't have to try as hard and work on its stance here. The resources are better allocated at weaker points.
And I'll be sure to bring my ego maniacal tendencies when I go for my depression screening on Monday, thanks for reminding me actually.
@Volcanox
We all tend to function in the 'me' bubble to some degree so I wasn't suggesting anything about being an ego maniac just that maybe you need to reel in your expectations a bit for what these companies should advertise because the fact is while it'd be nice if every game got the same attention, it simply isn't that way.
I also don't think Sony got paranoid after The Order. Its advertising has always been a little subpar, compared to MS although I do think Sony has done a much better job pushing its console this gen. Still, I do agree it needs to do more for its own IPs. It wasn't just Until Dawn. inFamous and Bloodborne, both great games and I believe both came out before The Order, weren't paid any mind either. At least not from what I saw here in the U.S. A few inFamous: Second Son posters in Gamestop and Best Buy. That was the extent of it. The game still sold pretty decently though.
Let's try to stay on the topic of Ratchet & Clank if possible. Thanks for the correction on Nefarious, @Volcanox.
@get2sammyb It's okay. The scripts of these games aren't carbon scored onto my brain or anything.
To be honest though...I found the redesign for Drek more jarring, maybe because he never re-appeared at all for any HD treatment. Here I can see human Nefarious has elements that would become parts of his robotic form, namely the band over his head with his logo, and his shoulder guards.
In all honesty I welcome it though, more Dr. Nefarious (I'm not even sure he's a real Doctor!) is a character I adore and I love the portrayal Armin Shimmerman gives in each title, and actually almost every title since he first appeared. And hey, if they go into more detail about how he became a robot, then lay it on me.
Though he wears glasses. Wasn't expecting that.
Can't wait for the game. Even though there was a bunch of them on the PS3, it seems that it's been a while since a Ratchet And Clank title will be arriving...at least a decent one. Hopefully, if the movie does well, they'll think about a Jak and Daxter movie too...bring back that franchise...just not make it too dark as what part 2 and 3 where. I loved the first one and though it had potential, but then it got changed around to copy off of Ratchet and Clank more or less.
@JLPick Ratchet and Clank: Nexus (The most recent title) was in 2013. It was a solid game actually. So it's been the longest gap between games in the series to date.
As for Jak and Daxter...well Jak 2 and 3 were Naughty Dog trying to break away from the cutesy and vibrant platformer kind of vibe from Crash 1, 2, 3, Racing and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy because they got bored and lost interest in making them, thinking they wouldn't sell and felt it got stale, with no plans to ever return to that kind of game, or the series really.
I find it rather amusing they fail to see the god damn irony with that statement about being bored with that style and artistic direction of game and gameplay, after 7-8 darker and edgier/mature titles in relatively quick succession too. (Jak 2, Jak 3, Jak X, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Still The Last of Us, and whatever that handheld Uncharted was called.)
This is such a wonderful thing for dads like myself: movies like this are always a winner with kids 4- 12 and when we come home from the cinema and get to play the game the movie's based on, although my kids will think it's the other way around, will be such a fest of recognition for them. And by the looks of it the game will look pretty much like a well animated Pixar movie (remember those? ), so there will be total immersion.
If the game and movie are marketed right, and preferably come with a PS4 price drop to $299, this could reel in the Wii crowd that still hasn't found their replacement yet. If dad can play CoD and GTA and the kids can enjoy Ratchet, along with many other kid friendly games, the PS4 is the best all round console and is a purchase that is easily justifiable.
@Gamer83
I was home with the flu the other day and after accusing Nintendo of not marketing their games properly for 3 years now, it turned out they do advertise...just not when you and I are watching tv
SEE! THAT is how you do a video game movie, not live action and changing all the characters but keeping it looking and sounding like the game it was based on
now if only the Uncharted Movie would be done like this
Great trailer, they should stick it on telly around St Paddies day to build up the movie....
Never really played the games but the film looks fun, hope it's great.
Trailer looks great. I hope Sony and other film studios start taking game brands seriously. Spyro, Jak and daxter, Patapon, Resistance comes to mind.
@Boerewors
It's just weird because last gen, Wii advertisements were every where. And not just for the casual stuff either. But anyway, hopefully this is a game that will appeal to that family audience on PS4.
You cant jump to conclusions that it will be the best video game movie ever, but its looking decent.
I saw the trailer and I couldn't tell if it was a movie or a high end video game. 10/10 will watch. Even though I was more of a Jak and Daxter platformer gamer in the ps2 era, I still enjoy the series.
@get2sammyb Do we have an actual confirmed release date (MM/DD/YYYY) for either the movie or video game yet?
How about WarCraft is going to be the best video game based movie?
Sure looks better than the Angry Birds movie. That thing looks horrid.
