Sony has boasted that the PlayStation 4 is its fastest-selling system ever, flaunting sales of 30.2 million units. That number represents consoles sold through to consumers by the way, and is accurate as of 22nd November. According to the manufacturer, the PS4 has reached the 30 million units milestone two months faster than the PlayStation 2 – and all without Japan playing ball and Black Friday around the corner.
The Japanese giant expects to sell 17.5 million PS4 consoles throughout the current fiscal year, which would represent pretty impressive growth over 2014's still impressive 14.8 million. But as we illustrated in our feature, 2016 is going to be absolutely colossal for the system, with the likes of The Last Guardian and Horizon: Zero Dawn due out. Could we also get a slim model in time for next Christmas? We're not ruling it out.

I wish more gaming headlines started with "Bloody Nora!"
@Churchy I'll make it a mission to ensure that this happens.
@get2sammyb Good man! But still, if this is true and it's already sold more than the PS2 in the same amount of time, that's pretty insane.
I could see the system surpassing the PS2 in sales all together, and become the number one system ever. It seems that it's never ending. 2016 will definitely prove it with the great games coming out, and since the system already has a wide variety of genres, I could see it surpassing a lot. Xbox One isn't even a competition for them anymore, and the Wii U is just plain horrible...the only real threat they will have coming (and it's a maybe) would be Nintendo's NX system...but again, that all depends on nintendo actually getting into it and fighting. Hopefully, all this money does not go to Sony's heads and they make an update onto the systems to spit out real money for all of us!!!!
@get2sammyb To my question on another forum and just to let you know, you cannot download movies or tv episodes that you bought onto the PS4. The only way you can watch them is with a strong internet signal and the MY VIDEO app going on. I wish they would create the update to allow this to happen though...just in case my PS3 dies.
Its unsurprising this console has sold well. The PS3, great that it was, also had some flaws which Sony has addressed. Its also been priced well too.
In my mind, the only thing it needs to address now is the PSN and its exclusive line up. I know one of these is certainly looking brighter with Uncharted 4 and Horizon: Zero Dawn but I wouldn't mind seeing the PSN brought up to speed - especially as its no longer a totally 'free' service as we now pay to play online!
And it's all thanks to a bad DRM decision on Microsoft's part that never even went to production....
Stakeholder Management, always the key to victory!
Dang, that's insane. Sony is dominating this gen. Good news to hear as this means a larger market for developers, a s that means more games to be made. I think this will be the best gen of gaming yet.
Holiday sales may see this hit between 35-40 million by the end of February, ive spoken to at least ten people claiming theyre lining up for the $299.99 model. Then if they release PSVR around the time of E3 with some pretty tasty bundles, and save the holiday seaon next year for all the first party games we didnt have this holdiay season. I know theres a couple out in the first few months of next year, but at the Playstation Experience id like them to announce a summer release date on VR and some teasers and trailers for unnanounced games coming next year. This would make the momentum of aales throughout next year a consistent flood, as opposed to spurts and leaks.
Will be 30 000 001 soon, i'm going to get my PS4 in next couple of days.
I only recently bought the PS4, gaming since the Atari 2600 so I guess I'm still attached to games consoles.
I've found it has a great range of games and remote play works well. Hope they get PS2 emulation up and running into a service soon, the PS2 Star Wars games look to get a real boost on PS4.
@Mega-Gazz Not true. It's helped for sure, but that line of thinking dismisses everything that's good about the PS4 (the marketing, the price, the games) as well as the fact that Sony's always had a stronger global presence than any of its competitors.
PS4 sells 30 million in 2 years.
Wii U sells 10 million in 3 years.
For as much of a Nintendo fan as I've long been, it's time for them to go 3rd party, and to do it now while they can do it in style, instead of when they're practically out of money like Sega and Atari were.
The only issue I have with the PS4 right now is that I wish the triggers were stronger on the controllers. Already had to replace a couple. But the harddrive replacement is really easy, which is nice. Gave mine the 2TB treatment this week. Wonderful seeing that 1.77TB of free space after it was all said and done.
Like Eek the Cat used to say, Kumbaya!!
@Quorthon Which HDD did you go with?
Please tell me Nora is still alive.
Incredible numbers in such a short time. How many units more can you even sell?
And all this with no big exclusive blockbusters to speak of! (Bloodborne is by far their best exclusive imo, but it's more of a niche game)
2016 will not only bring us tons of must own (exclusive) games, it'll be the year that we finally get to buy our own personal VR headset! Can't wait!
For the people who predict it's gonna outsell the PS2, I don't see that happening and I actually hope it won't. Not that I don't like the PS4 now, but devs are already squeezing everything out if it as it is. It's not like the 360 or even more the PS3 with state of the art tech and lots of untapped potential, it's a medium to low specced PC in a shiny box. So I hope this gen won't last longer than 5 years tops or that we get an "elite" model in 2016 with some extra horsepower; I'd like my games to run smooth on 1080p, but we're not seeing that atm with most games.
All of this achieved with a relatively weak first party/exclusive line up. That all changes too next year with plenty of great looking exclusives starting with Uncharted, I also suspect that they will beat their sales target for the year considering they are already very close to it with black Friday and Xmas still to come.
What apart from the speed bonus do you get from a 2TB hard drive? I have BF4, Star Wars, Bloodborne, BLOPS3 and MGS all big game's and 3 or 4 indie's and I still have 188 gig free, i'll upgrade soon to the 1TB when I feel I need to but with most big game's downloading in under an hour I don't see the point yet unless there's something i'm missing.
@carlos82 I keep telling y'all - exclusives aren't as important as they're made out to be.
@Quorthon 3DS sells 55 million in four years.
PS Vita sells around 5 million (?) in three years.
Sony should just give it up and go third party, right?
PS2 took 26 months to reach this, PS4 did it in 24.
That's crazy
@get2sammyb
To be fair, Xbox kinda screwed themselves over and gave Sony the reigns. But if it weren't for exclusives, the PS3 would not have came out on top, if it wasn't for exclusives, nobody would blink an eye at the Xbox One right now...
Exclusives are important, they give a console an identity and incentive, especially when you no longer find yourself on top of the ladder.
@sub12 @get2sammyb I completely agree, it was kind of the point I was getting at just not quite as direct. I personally have 2 PS4's having just got the new Star Wars edition console (keeping the other to play in the bedroom when the Mrs watches rubbish on tv) and wouldn't swap either of them for anything else.
@Kage_88 Perfect reply to @Quorthon, tips hat was basically going to say the same thing. Nintendo gain very little except losing control by going third party.
@Kage_88 I understand what you are trying to say, but Vita still sold more than the WiiU sadly (around 12 million units in 3 years). I happily own both system btw.
@Feena @KratosMD You both got that 12 million from vgchatz right? Honestly I think that particular one is guess Sony haven't disclosed Vita numbers II years as it sold like trash pretty much everywhere they also grouped it with PSP numbers when they actuallydid. I'd wager its less then 10 million but obviously I'm also guessing.
@get2sammyb I am not trying to dismiss post-release efforts and all of sony's work, but Microsoft is no slouch either. Once the public sentiment shifted and initial install base was in Sony's favour I would argue it was an uphill battle for Microsoft.
@Mega-Gazz. Dunno about that mate. Loadsa my mates hate the sheer 'size' of the xbox one and it's external brick of battery. It's simply ugly. And also PS4, everyone knows is THE faster console and is 90% more likely to run games at full 1080p/60fps. I did think about buying a xbox one for Halo and Forza exclusives.. but 2 games? That's not enough for me to splash out £300 on a lesser-powered, overweight, ugly xbox one. Nah I'd spend my money on PS4's power thank you cos it runs majority of third games better and look better. It does FIFA, COD and loads more breadth to gaming library than Microsoft ever will. Anyways, PS4 with the game broadcasts, iplayer, spotify, nice gaming community, it's PS VITA sibling with massive library of PSP, PS1, PS vita and remote play is just sweet. Lying on my sofa playing destiny or COD on me wee vita is frikkin lazy bliss!! However, once xbox one becomes slimmer, better design, NO external power brick and a sub £150 price point then I might consider it as a back up gaming device. In fact, I've yet to know any of my mates to own or even wanting to buy a xbox one! So far amongst our crowd 12 own PS4, 24 own PC, 8 own 3DS, 4 with 360s, 2 with Wii U. Bu xmas 4 more will be getting PS4. Yep Sony's done things alright this gen... just don't get complacent and grow greedy! Hope PS4 VR will proper! Live long and prosper gamers!
Great gaming console so far 1st console I got day 1 and glad I did to Well worth it.
Brilliant console
@bbq_boy So you must be the only one in your circle that owns a PS Vita, then?
@grockumus whoops sorry forgot to mention vita! 4 of us have one but 3 have stopped playing it.
@bbq_boy The only reason I mentioned PS Vita was because I frequently browse this site with one. It's a little troublesome to post on here from one, but hey, it's pretty cool it can do at.
I've been trying to get my friends to buy one for the longest time so we could play games like Freedom Wars together. I even told them about how Bestbuy was selling PSTVs for $20 at one point in time, but no one bit. I get nothing but a smile and a nod from most of them. Hell, I even bought a PSTV on release.for $100 for my close friend's birthday, and it was only used for P4G and on a couple of occasions, ad hoc play on Sword Art Online -Hollow Fragment-.
Most of the time, I feel like a serious shill for PS Vita, but honestly, I'm only trying to be more connected with my like-minded gaming friends =(
