If you're still yet to be wowed by the latest generation of consoles, then it may be worth seeing how your faithful PlayStation 3 stacks up against the PlayStation 4. Alright, this Call of Duty: Black Ops III comparison actually features the Xbox versions – but it's probably safe to assume that the differences will be more pronounced across PlayStation platforms, with the PS3 proving such a challenge for third-party publishers and all.
The difference between the versions is, frankly, amazing. Some areas feature completely different assets, while the lighting and geometry is much worse on the last-gen consoles. It's worth adding that if you buy the game on the PS3 you won't be getting the campaign either, as apparently it simply wouldn't run on the older systems. In other words: it's time to upgrade to the new-gen if you can – you won't look back.

I don't think last gen Call of Duty was never about the graphics, was it? Even on ps4/xbone, they aren't great looking games in my opinion.
@NathanUC call of duty 4 looked unbelievable and far ahead of the competition at the time. So I disagree.
They have nerfed the last gen versions. Absolutely no reason for the arrows in the centre of one shot to be so spaced out on the last gen versions.
are you blind LOL , thats sounds just as stupid as those people who were trying to say fallout 4 is the exact same as fallout 3 in graphics department. stop looking at the landscape look at the whole screen the small stuff the computers with details and new things popping up and the stuff in the deep background , you cant be a real gamer if you think there not good graphics because WTF is good that garbage of halo of late or how about witcher 3 great game but mediocre at best graphics on the console versions but this game is stunning in detail and looks.
Man, I honestly feel sorry for the people who STILL haven't upgraded to PS4 yet. They've missed out on so many great games already, and the technology is definitely far superior.
@NathanUC True, but the difference is gigantic between the versions. I understand not everyone can afford to upgrade, but...
@themcnoisy While I do agree that CoD4 looked pretty good, I still think it was GRAPHICALLY behind other games such as Halo 3 or even Resistance: Fall of Man. Besides, like EIGHT CoD games have released since then! I haven't found any of them graphically impressive. Of any, I'd say MW2 was the best work for it's time, but even that paled in comparison graphically to games like Killzone 2.
The last gen versions of BO3 sure do look awful, but at least they appear smooth. I think any CoD player can agree with me that a smooth frame-rate is way more important that HD textures. I do think it should have a lower price tag than $49.99 US though.. digitally releasing the multiplayer only game on last gen for $29.99 seems more fair to me.
All this from a guy who's multiplayer FPS of choice is still Killzone Shadow Fall.. so I guess take it with a grain of salt.
For me it looks like they forgot to add the textures to the Xbox 360 verison.
Things I got out of watching this video:
1. If you own a new gen console, buy that version.
2. If you don't own a new gen console you can still just buy the old version, it won't look as pretty,but you arne't missing much.
3. B team was working on last gen. I'd really like to see last years 360 COD game compared to this one, or even the one before that, b/c I've seen games like GTV and Uncharted 3 and those 360 graphics seem to be the bare minimum of effort, less to do w/ what's under the hood, more about the effort. If this years 360 looks better than the last 2 years of COD on 360 I'll rescind that comment.
New gen hardware is nice, but I'm still not convinced those graphics are $300 better than the old ones. PS1 to PS2 yes, and PS2 to PS3 most likley, but this gens jump is still the smallest and least worth the money for 1 any game. Thankfully there are several games out now to justify the cost, but no 1 game has impressed me all that much.
If you still got ps3 or 360 and didnt watch these silly comparison videos would you even care as long as the multiplayer still plays well...i personally couldnt give a rats ass about how they differ, its all about how they play and even after watching this it wouldn't put me off buying it on ps3 if thats all i had
@rjejr I'm really interested to read your impressions when you do upgrade. It's honestly the little things for me, like the patching system, install times, and all of the social features.
Also, 1080p genuinely makes a massive difference. When I go back to my PS3 now, things look very blurry.
Yeah, I have the same feeling ... like I would look at a alpha version.
Anyway, I wouldn't buy it anyway, because it doesn't have a single player experience (campaign) and I don't play multiplayer games.
@get2sammyb Maybe I should just wait and buy a PS5 so I can see the upgrade to 4k, which I feel sure Sony left out of PS4 on purpose so it would have something left for PS5.
I'm not really interested in the share stuff, and even on my 52" 1080p tv I'm not expecting to be blown away on PS4. Really, if Uncharted 4 came out on PS3 w/ the U3 engine I'd be fine. FFXV w/ the FFXIII engine I'd b fine, TLG w/ the HD Ico look I'd be fine. My 50 year old eyes are going I'm afraid, minor little improvements don't appeal to me.
Though in this case that 360 version looks putrid. Like those GTAV graphics after the update, then they had to patch the update to make them look good again. Maybe these 360 graphics have been upgraded?

@get2sammyb No Vue article?

Not only is the Campaign missing but quite a few other features will be too. Things like the gunsmith and Paintjob, I don't think some of the bonus DLC ('Nuketown' and the 'Giant' Zombies maps) is included either and there is tallk that it won't get the Season of DLC too. I have heard it only runs at 30fps too.
I can't believe that they needed to change as much as they have though. I know some of the things like the birds in the sky or papers blowing about may need to be removed but a static vehicle, static floors and even the walls... I could understand if the general look was the same but with lower res. It looks worse than CoD4 did and that was quite basic!
I don't think CoD has ever been the best looking game available but I also don't think it ever looked that bad either. Most of the games that looked better were running at 30fps anyway. It was never going to compete with Uncharted, Last of Us, Gears of War etc as these because of the differences in frame rate. Never the less I thought it looked 'good' if not great!
Wonder what the wiiU could have done.
@rjejr
One of the reasons you haven't seen a big difference in graphics between the PS4 & PS3, most of the games that have been released where last gen games hence the PS4 & PS3 version of most games. Black Ops 3 was made for current gen consoles first & for most PS4 & XboxOne, then scaled down for last gen PS3 & 360. I am not surprised how the PS3 & Xbox360 looks, before you go into anything else the PS3 & 360 only has 1GB of memory towards the PS4 & XboxOne's 8GB. Just look at Uncharted 4 when that releases, and lets not forget how stunning The Order 1886 looks.
Sorry that was the Wii U that had 1GB the PS3 & 360 had half a GB.
@sonicmeerkat
I spent the whole video thinking "Black Ops 3 on Xbox One looks exactly like Black Ops 2 on Wii U...."
@banacheck Actually both the PS3 and XB360 have 512K of RAM - 1/16th! The XB360 has a flexible 512k but the PS3 is split into 2 256k - one of the main reasons multi-platform game developers struggled with their PS3 port.
Even though the majority of games so far have effectively been ported up to this gen, the technology has given the visuals a lot more depth, much better particle physics and dynamic lighting over the last gen - as well as the resolution boost, higher polygon counts and probably more AI like wildlife too.
We are getting more and more games that are developed purely with this gen in mind and developers are also getting to grips with the consoles and better ways to optimise. This is the first CoD to be built purely for this gen. Treyarch have nothing to do with the last gen version other than I guess giving the 'code' and layout to another developer. I wouldn't be surprised if that developer had early code to try and make it work before Treyarch added the 'polish' which may explain some of the differences too.
@get2sammyb - Going on the PS Store on PS3 after owning a PS4 is the worst. I find myself yelling "load all ready" at the TV...
@ElkinFencer10 Well see I feel like it'd be more appropriate to say wiiU is like gen 7.5 considering they're already discussing the NX.
@Splat Yup, the stores on PS3 and Vita are awful (which I can say without even owning a PS4). Thankfully we have the web version.
@sonicmeerkat
No, it's just the end of its life span. The NES had a 6 year life span; the SNES had a 5 year life span; the N64 had a 5 year life span; the Gamecube had a 5 year life span; the Wii had a 6 year life span; and if they've said that they're announcing the NX in 2016, that means it will be a 2017 release, giving the Wii U a 5 year life span. It might feel short since the Wii U released a year before the PS4 and the Xbox One, but it's actually exactly on par with the console release pattern that Nintendo has always followed.
(Note that I was basing on North American release dates; the NES and SNES were staggered in terms of releasing across the globe).
Those differences are nothing to do with the power of the consoles. The last gen versions simply haven't had the effort put into them, and probably for good reasons like market share. I'd say previous last gen versions of cod looked better.
