One story that's gone under the radar a little bit is the success of Minecraft: PS Vita Edition in Japan. The game's barely left the Media Create charts since its launch, and has sold almost 400k copies on the handheld in Sony's home nation. There's a market for "building" games in the East, then – and the upcoming Dragon Quest Builders may have the brand power to catapult the genre into the mainstream.
Perhaps identifying the potential popularity of the spin-off, the PlayStation maker has announced a custom Vita model that will launch alongside the game in Japan on 28th January. For a very reasonable ¥25,980 (~$211), locals will be able to nab a silver system alongside the game and a Metal Slime earphone jack figurine. It's a really cool looking device, with a slime's silhouette also printed on the rear touchpad and on the d-pad.
Sony's already made one custom Dragon Quest console for the PlayStation 4 and it sold like crazy, so we're expecting this well presented set to prove similarly successful for the Vita. Sadly, it's unlikely to ever make its way overseas, but pre-orders are available from the Sony Store if you want to try your luck with an import.

Dat d-pad!
Looks amazing!
I thought DQB was a PS4 game?
That photo makes me think Vita should be a pocket sized tablet screen/phone and the sides should be removable and fold in half to also fit in your picket. Besides all portable consoles having TV out all tablets should also have detachable buttons that can fit in your povket. I know it's been tried several times before and always seems to fail, but I just hope somebody manages it before Apple. Amazon is really pushing tablets, and it's home Fire has a vontroller, but after their severe crash and burn with their phone I'm not sure how many more big gambles they'll be taking.
Vita Phone should be a thing though.
Edit - actually the buttons on the end can be 2 separate clip on pieces, it doesn't need to be 1 long piece that folds in the middle. They could call it PS Triforce
Gorgeous machine. Meanwhile, in the west, R.I.P Vita
@audiobrainiac my vita has rarely been off the shelf over the last year. Stored on my memory cards are acclaimed games and I own a grip so the vitas really comfortable. The big issue is the strangely omitted hdmi out - if I could link it to my larger (24 inch so not so big) screen then I would definitely play it more regularly. Also the missing L2 and R2 buttons - I have found mgs3 to be a complete ball ache which imo includes using remote play on other games.
The more I think about it - who the hell designed the vita?
Pros; Nicely powered - a lovely ui - great screen - superb launch games - sleek design - remote play
Cons; Minimal onboard memory - Expensive memory cards - uncomfortable without a grip - no hdmi out - crap camera - unusable back touchpad - no L2 or R2 buttons
Its like the handheld version of the Dreamcast.
I would want one of those. Love the design.
If I had the cash is buy it. I'm still in the odd minority here in the west that loves and plays the Vita more than anything else! Really looking forward to the game too:-)
yes... yes it is...
