In a move that makes almost no sense - to us, at least - Square Enix is partnering with Microsoft to release a special edition Final Fantasy XV Xbox One controller. It'll soon be available to pre-order in Asia.
Sporting a sleek look and some nice little details, it's an attractive pad - it's just a shame that the PlayStation nation isn't getting similar treatment. Given the Xbox One's performance in Japan, it'd surely be a waste of time for everyone involved if the controller doesn't make it West - which is one of the main reasons as to why we find this whole thing particularly baffling.

It's like the Tomb Raider exclusivity deal all over again! "SQUAAAAARE!!"
:hurtrealbad:
To be honest, I've always been curious how many copies FF games even sell on Xbox compared to other platforms. It just doesn't seem to fit at all.
@ricklongo Final Fantasy Type-0 famously did 80% of its sales on PS4.
@ricklongo I was thinking the same thing. I think a large portion of PlayStation owners, including myself, buy the systems as they'll be the most likely to get localized Japanese games. I really don't understand who this benefits. Though I wouldn't buy a PS4 version anyway as my 20th anniversary controller is just too beautiful.
Edit: @get2sammyb Ahh, it makes even less sense now. Though that figure really isn't too surprising tbh.
I wouldn't buy one anyway unless it was the same price as a regular controller cuz I don't look at the damn thing anyway when I'm playing.. And I don't try to impress people when they come over at how nerdy I really am hehe..
There isn't a more braindead company in the industry than SquareEnix. Keep sh*tting on Sony and Nintendo fans, you know, the people who actually buy your games, geniuses. I know inevitably somebody will say 'it's business' and while true there is smart business and there is dumb business. This is dumba$$ business, just like the Tomb Raider decision.
it's probably because NO ONE is going to buy it on XB1 so maybe Microsoft asked Square to give players some extra incentive to buy it on the XB1
Final Fantasy games on XBOX are notoriously poor sellers, makes me wonder why they even bothered with putting FFXV and KH3 on the XB1 in the first place (as @get2sammyb said 80% of Type-0's sales were on PS4 and the entire FFXIII saga sold much better on PS3)
@FullbringIchigo
It really makes no sense that the Xbox gets Final Fantasy but the Nintendo platforms don't. They're essentially saying the sales on Nintendo's consoles would be worth the time and effort but the small number of people that buy the game on Xbox is worth it? Idiotic. And a controller that can't compete with the Halo 5 controllers, the white and gold controller and especially the elite controller, isn't going to turn the fortunes of the series on Xbox. And what's the reward for the people who, again, actually buy the company's games? A big, fat nothing. Hope to hear the explanations soon. I'm sure they'll be as hilariously pathetic as the spin jobs done by the morons behind the decision to make Tomb Raider Xbox exclusive. It'll be interesting to see if SE is willing to take the stupidity a step further and give MS the marketing deal.
Personally I don't like the controller that much. I much prefer the Elite as well as some of the other 'game related' XB1 controllers. I don't understand the decision to make a FF XB1 controller myself either. Final Fantasy to me is a PS game - even though I know its now multi-platform.
I guess it could make sense for Square Enix - particularly as the game doesn't sell as well on Xbox. It may increase their sales on this platform and promote it to these console owners - something it may not feel necessary to do for PS owners. No doubt they benefit from some financial input from MS which in turn could benefit the PS fans as that money is used in the development of the franchise
@BAMozzy
I'm not sure I view FF as a PS franchise, since Nintendo had it first, but it's definitely more associated with PS than Xbox. You should go where the fanbase is. I have no problem with an Xbox-related controller to try and get more Xbox players interested (if they really believe a controller is going to do that), but how about something for people who have backed your games for nearly two decades? If Xbox One was smoking PS4 in sales it would at least be understandable but SE seems to be jumping ship from the console with the biggest userbase and the one that buys its games in the largest numbers. Don't care what anybody says, sometimes fans need to be put ahead of a giant corporations dollars, especially when the other company, in this case, SE, doesn't really need the help.
@Gamer83 i don't know about Square "Jumping Ship" as they have publicly admitted the whole Tomb Raider thing was a farce and they wouldn't be doing it again
but things like special controllers are commissioned by the console manufacturer themselves all they do is ask is for permission to use the IP name so this will just be MS trying to boost sales of their system by saying "Look guys we have Final Fantasy as well"
still it's not going to work, while it may sound clichéd but the XBOX user base is more interested in Shooters and Racers and RPG's just aint very high on their list of gaming priorities and JRPG's are even lower
it's pretty much a given that if you want Shooters get a XBOX, you want ANYTHING else get a PlayStation
@Gamer83 I know it was on Nintendo before but I don't know if the games are still on that console. I haven't owned a Nintendo since the Wii and barely played that.
I also don't know the ins and outs of this decision. For all I know, Sony may not of wanted a FF branded PS4 controller or some of their 'profits' going to Square Enix due to the licensing - I bet some of the profits of each XB1 FF controller go to Square Enix because it has their 'branding' on it.
Its not just down to Square Enix. For all we know they could have wanted to do a PS controller or some other Sony Merchandise but if Sony say they can't (for any reason) then they can't use these 'branded' products. Like I said I don't know the reasons or details, I don't know if Sony weren't approached etc.
Lets not forget that Sony sold all of their shares in Square Enix so maybe trying to build up a bit of rapport with MS and its console user base. There could be any number of reasons for this decision and not because 'Square Enix are jumping ship or forgetting about its PS fan base.
@FullBringIchigo Shooters maybe popular on Xbox, but so are western RPG's. After all Mass Effect, Oblivion, the Witcher all started their console life on Xbox - its also has the marketing to Fallout 4. Shooters seem to have moved to PS4 with Destiny, CoD and SW:BF on PS in terms of marketing and earlier DLC.
In terms of JRPG's though the Xbox is definitely lacking although I do feel the differences between western and eastern RPG's are not as distinct as they once were anyway.
@FullbringIchigo
Jumping ship is the wrong term, but, they've given far too much preferential treatment to a userbase that couldn't give less of a sh*t about them. Time for somebody at that damn company to wake up. If it wants to throw more weight behind a different brand that's fine, but have it at least make sense. Nintendo gamers buy more SE games than Xbox gamers do.
It looks horrible That's my opinion.
@Flaming_Kaiser Agreed! I love my Final Fantasy but this looks bad...
@Gamer83 This is not so much Square's doing as it is Sony's. There was a Fallout 4 exclusive Xbox One controller a few weeks ago as well. I belive due to the touchscreen on the PS4, Sony has nearly made it impossible for third parties to make controllers. I have yet to see a Rock Candy controller for the PS4 as well where as I see them for the Xbox One and even the Wii U.
So yeah I believe this one is Sony's doing not Square's.
I'm sure Microsoft paid them for the loss they will have but not marketing final fantasy to PlayStation players when they are generally the ones who play it. Lol
@Tasuki
Could be the case though I have a hard time believing Sony wouldn't jump on a deal for an FF themed controller. Sure it might cost a bit more to get it done if Sony had to help out, but it would likely sell very well and be beneficial to both parties.
@Gamer83 Maybe but then again why not jump on a Fallout 4 controller? I have seen all over various sites not to mention people I know who were upset that Xbox One got a Fallout controller and Sony didnt, they clearly would have paid for it. I believe Sony holds a patent for the touch screen and will only let those who pay use it as in the case with Hori. This gen Sony reminds me of Nintendo in the 80's with their patent tactics.
@Tasuki
It's definitely bs if that's what Sony is doing. Not that I'd ever buy a third party controller but people should have the options.
@Gamer83 Yep totally agree especially when it allows Sony to set the price. That's the main reason I only have 3 PS4 controllers. I can't justify paying the same price for a controller as I do a game. Although at least with a game the prices go down eventually. PS4 controllers go on sale so rarely cause they know you are stuck with them since there is no cheaper 3rd party alternative.
I thought these controllers - such as the Fallout 4 one was still a licensed and branded controller and made by the same company that makes the standard version under that license. The Artwork though is obviously licensed and copyrighted to the developer/publisher. In an agreement (like marketing rights as MS has with Fallout), I would have thought a certain percentage of the profits goes to the developer and some to the console and overall its purpose is to promote the game.
As Fallout 4 is marketed by Microsoft, its understandable why there isn't a PS version - in the same way there isn't a BO3 or SW:BF controller for xbox.
Obviously its better for the console manufacturers to use their own 1st party games as their isn't copyright issues.
I hear that the FF Xbox one controller is only a concept anyway and not likely to go into production...
@ricklongo in Japan, about 612. Or maybe less?
@Gamer83 COMPLETELY agree. What in the world is square thinking? Seems like square has gotten into bed with Micro$oft alot lately. How could they ever think this is a good idea? Especially since the biggest market for this will surely be in Japan where the xboner is basically dead. They must have dropped quite a bit of cash for this, unless of course there will be a FF15 themed ps4 with a special controller that they are keeping under wraps for now. Square was once one of my most favorite developers, now they seem to be slowly fading away one bad decision after another.
@TheIronChimp Star wars ps4 controller released recently
@SonyInfinity So I guess Bethesda jumped into that bed too since they also released a special edition Xbox One controller, huh.
Bethesda has seemingly always favored microsoft if memory serves. Really though one has nothing to do with the other. Just seems square is giving alot of love to Microsoft lately, but I'm certain money has something to do with thaylt.
@Tasuki
Bethesda has always favored MS. Both are Western companies, Bethesda's games have always run and sold better on Xbox. That alliance makes perfect sense. SE, a Japanese company favoring MS over Sony or Nintendo? Pretty idiotic considering how pitifully Xbox sells in Japan and the fact that even with fewer games released for its platforms, SE does better on Nintendo. The percentages on PS vs. Xbox speak for themselves. There's no denying SE has hopped into bed quite a bit with MS though, and it's making the wrong choices. Chances are Tomb Raider has been effectively killed off due to this stupidity.
I don't pledge my allegiance to either giant corporation and exclusive deals, when it makes sense, are fine. But when something is dumb it has to be called out and, lately, a lot of SE's choices are beyond that.
@Gamer83 Ah that makes sense but as they say business is business. It's more then likely MS throwing money their way and honestly is Square going to say no?? Not really. They jumped from Nintendo to Sony back when the PS came out now they did it again.
@Tasuki well they jumped from Nintendo to Sony because Nintendo was really showing signs of trouble and Sony was the opposite.
I cant see MS throwing alot of money their way for this - Lets face it, controller 'skins' dont sell consoles.
The best thing SE could probably do right now is just put all its energy back to Sony. That's where their fans are. Dont even bother to release Japanese franchises on XB and just win back loyalty from PS owners. Remind the Japanese why they bought consoles in the first place.
This looks terrible. It looks like it's a tie-in to Beyonce Sing Star, not FF.
