The perception among gamers is that the PlayStation 4 is flopping in Japan, but while it's certainly not firing on all cylinders in the Eastern nation, it's still doing reasonably well. Today's big Media Create update has revealed that the console has now crossed two million sales in Sony's home territory, which is a decent achievement considering the device is not even two years old in the region.
The system sold 27,311 units in the Land of the Rising Sun over the course of the week ending 15th November, which puts its life to date tally at 2,005,949 units in total. By comparison, the Wii U has sold 2,679,614 units since launching on 8th December 2012, while the Xbox One has managed just 59,746 units since 4th September 2014. The PS4 has sold more in the past two weeks than Microsoft's machine in over a year.
And we still get the distinct impression that there's much more for Sony to achieve. While it does have a handful of domestically appealing releases under its belt now, the market is still waiting for the likes of Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5, and Final Fantasy XV. When those games come out, there'll be a surge of new PS4 purchases, which should help propel it towards its next major milestone.

I got enough to get a PS4 now. Gonna see what deal I can get on Black Friday.
@Apczak Thanks for the heads up.
I think 2016 will be the make or break year for console gaming in Japan, if indeed the NX is launching. Till now there's hasn't been a real reason for Japanese people to upgrade because most titles are either avaliable for the PS3 or they just aren't attractive for Japanese gamers, but 2016 might see some change. Although Persona is still coming to the PS3, FFXV isn't and titles like Dark Souls 3, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6 and the upcoming DQ games might attract lots of gamers.
Although it's obvious that the console market is shrinking, you still have this feeling that 1 succesful game or console could break the trend. It will never be like it once was, but gaming is still very much a big part of people's lives there and I wanna believe they need a home console equivalent of Pokemon or Yokai Watch, a game so influential that owning a console doesn't make you a lazy slacker, but one of the cool cats (I am that old indeed).
The last 2 Tokyo Games Shows gave me hope, but we cant deny that lots of Japanese gaming companies are really struggling and Japan is becoming less and less important in the industry. I like Japanese devs and console manufacturers the best when they don't consider the Western audiences too much and when we are surprised with some crazy games or ideas for the consoles. Nintendo's failed attempts to bring some Japan into our lives aside, we don't see the Japanese influence as much as I would like and the PS4 is as dull as it is succesfull at times. Luckily it won't take long till PS VR arrives, which could be a massive succes over there and I a pretty "Japanese" thing to do for Sony.
I hope Scalebound and Recore help the Xbox because I want to see Xbox get more Japanese games. But congratulations on Sony!! Hopefully this will get more Japanese developers to consider making games so there's a bigger chance we'll get to see them over here in the west.
Personally, I love Japanese games over Western games, so any good news from Japan is good news for me. (^_^ )
