Bethesda seems to have really knocked it out with Fallout 4. The post-apocalyptic role-playing game has been headlining every major gaming website all week now, so it's safe to say that it's popular – but even its most optimistic fans wouldn't have thought that it'd be this popular.
The studio has stated that the title has shipped 12 million units on launch day alone. Let that sink in: 12 million units on launch day. That's an utterly ridiculous figure, almost putting it on the same level as what we'd expect from juggernaut franchises like Call of Duty. Heck, with this initial number, it may even end up topping Star Wars: Battlefront by the time that the year's out, which just seems crazy.
Up until this point, Bethesda's biggest ever launch was with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which shipped 7 million and sold 3.5 million copies through to consumers in its first 48 hours on the market. And, while we're only talking about shipped units when it comes to Fallout 4, you have to imagine that it will have easily outsold the developer's previous outing with retailers demanding so much stock.
Over the next couple of weeks, we're bound to hear more details on how many units the game's sold, so feel free to start making some outrageous bets in the comments section below.

That's some insane numbers! Hats off to them though. I'm about 8 hours in and it's superb. Enjoying it far more than The Witcher, which was my top RPG so far.
I'm sure they sold a heck of a lot of digital versions as well.
This is INSANE.
Well, good for Bethesda. Tried the game out recently and just couldn't get into it but there is no denying the work that was put in.
I'm actually really surprised at this. I knew it would sell well, but these are numbers that only GTA or COD could get
Well deserved. It is a great game. I still love New Vegas the most (so far). But I thoroughly enjoy this. I did notice some thing funny though.
Spoiler
Fallout 3 chasing father
Fallout 4 chasing son.
Fallout new Vegas not chasing anyone (not made by Bethesda), seems funny.
And you know what's great as well? Bethesda decided to ship out a map along with the game as well. This is how you treat your customers, EA and Activision.
"Screw QA, this engine will keep us going for at least another 5 years guys... The people love us!!!"
@nlovett218 really? I got a perk chart. No map.
@nlovett218 @Johnnycide perk chart for me too, where's my map? Unbelievably good game and the best Bethesda game I've played, actually one of the best games I've ever played. I've spent half my time just building things.
Also I don't see Star Wars outselling this and it certainly doesn't deserve to
@Boerewors Pretty much...
Everyone loves a bit of a fallout, the make up sex is great.
Props to Bethesda for making a big expansive, fresh and addictive game. But make a new engine.
Bought my ps4 for this game, not disappointed at all, especially as I can play it on my Vita while everyone else watches TV
Destiny who?.....
I didn't doubt that it wouldn't sell, haha. Myself and many other gamers out there have waited for a true Fallout sequel for years, and with the killer showing they had for it at E3, there's no way it would have done bad at retail. Bethesda has created possibly my favorite game ever. I can't put it down!
Good for them, i like the way they do things - not mentioning it three years before it even comes out, just bang its out in a few months.
I didn't pre order, mainly because i was on holiday for launch day and i also picked up mad max and uncharted collection so i want to finish those before i lose 100 hours in fallout 4.
@Johnnycide @carlos82 oh my bad I had assumed it was a map. I hadn't really looked at it yet.
@nlovett218 @johnnycide @carlos82 the map comes with the official strategy guide! If you get the guide you'll get the map!
@Renandstimpeygti in all seriousness, I got a PS3 explicitly for MGS4 and then a PS4 for MGS5 and FO4. No shame
OT: that's a lot of $60s. I hope they use it to add a Hardcore Mode mod! (my only real complaint)
Got my copy and im already 32hrs in. Only done 3 main quests too. Definitely met my expectations. My personal GOTY
I'm not really into Fallout, but I'll tip my hat to the devs. A great number.
@charlesnarles same here if I'm honest, I've got mgs5 yet to play too! Too many games not enough time eh?
@Neolit yeah the first ten hours, I got my butt handed to me, but once I familiarized my self to the controls it became so fun and fairly easy. Picking the right weapon always helps. I forgot who sold it, but if you like melee, get the electric sword, costs about 300 caps, but boy was it worth it. 95 dmg, and I one shot raiders, ghouls and occasionally super mutants.
Off the bat, I realized there would be a time skip, since he got re-frozen.
@NomNom Yeah, I noticed something similar. In Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics and Fallout New Vegas, you play as someone from a different background each time. A vault dweller, a member of a tribe, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel and a courier. Bethesda seem to have got snagged on the "vault dweller" one, since in the non-Bethesda games just mentioned only 25% of them star a vault dweller yet in their games it's 100%. Maybe in FO5 you'll be a vault dweller trying to find their nephew. We'll go through all family relationships.
One thing I'm really enjoying is - and I can't believe I'm saying this about a Bethesda game - the attention to detail. In previous games there might be a little set piece moment where a murder occurs and the townsfolk gather around to gawk. If you talk to them, though, they all utter generic phrases such as "lovely day" or "I'm hungry". It's a lot better in FO4, speaking to someone on the lift down to Vault 111 has them actually talking about entering the vault rather than saying "I like trousers!" or "I want a sandwich!" There actually is an incident that occurs in Diamond City early on that has a crowd of onlookers who all actually talk about what just happened.
When Piper decides to nickname you "Blue" she says it's because you're a vault dweller - aha, I thought, this is where she mentions my jumpsuit even though I'm not wearing it now. But no, she says "Even though you're not wearing your jumpsuit now I can still tell, the Pip Boy and the lost look in your eyes give it away". By contrast, in The Witcher 3, Yennefer says she likes Geralt's beard whether he has one or not. In FO4 there's a ton of dialogue referencing who's with you, what you're doing, what's happening nearby. It's a nice contrast from Morrowind and Oblivion where it felt like there were basically 4 people in the whole world, cloned 100s of times, and almost always totally oblivious to what was happening around them.
Eat that crappy mobile games!! Proper games need to be savoured on consoles and PCs!
I definitely love Fallout 4 so far but honestly this game is too similar to Fallout 3 - mechanics, textures, glitches. There are not many improvements. I was hoping a more "next gen" (I do play on pc, so...) experience with Fallout 4 but it seems that Bethesda did not want to risk.
Just to point out - I effing love Fallout 4 and will play a ton of it. But my personal GOTY goes to Witcher 3. Witcher 3 was a huuuuge improvement over previous installments and in my personal opinion Fallout 4 did not fully deliver.
But I am extremely happy that it is a massive commercial success.
@NomNom Who sells this electric sword and where? The best I have found so far is a serrated Chinese officer sword with about 50 dam and it's not bad. But 95 dam - damn:).
