Star Wars Battlefront couldn't be launching at a better time. The world is currently gripped with force fever, as J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated The Force Awakens readies itself for release. DICE appears poised to take advantage of the situation, with its flashy multiplayer focused Battlefront reboot possessing all of the presentational pizzazz of a big-budget sci-fi blockbuster. But we did have worries during the recent beta that the game may be all flash with very little substance to back it up. So, what are the critics saying at this stage?
IGN - In Progress
Star Wars Battlefront captures everything I love most about Star Wars. It's playful and imaginative, driven by a sense of adventure and fun above all else. In those ways, developer DICE has made exactly the Star Wars multiplayer shooter I've always wanted. The catch is that it comes with baggage, and doesn't always know what to do with itself.
Polygon - 8/10
In a sea of multiplayer-focused shooters, Star Wars Battlefront distinguishes itself as much by what it does as what it doesn't, and that comes at a price. Its old school simplicity doesn't always mesh with its attempts to bring those ideas into 2015, and it lacks some of those back-of-the-box bullet points that most modern AAA shooters wouldn't be caught dead without.
Videogamer - 7/10
Star Wars Battlefront, then, is one of the best experiences of the year, if only for a short while. Completionists may stay with it to unlock figures for the in-game diorama which shows how many challenges you've completed, but others will find their interest has waned long before that. Too limited in its maps and modes to keep people hooked, it will nevertheless provide enough fun to jump onto once in a while, hear that famous score and maybe take down an AT-AT. Those who wanted a Battlefront III, however, will have to wait a little while longer.
GameSpot - 7/10
Battlefront doesn't go much deeper than its ambitious surface appeal. It front loads its best content, only to fade in quality as the hours roll by. Star Wars Battlefront's skin is beautiful, but its legs are shaking, and threaten to buckle with time.
Giant Bomb - 3/5
There's a whole lot of Star Wars seeping out of every pore of Battlefront, and no amount of forced fan service took away from the fact that some moments in this game reminded me of the many things I love about the film franchise. If the impending release of The Force Awakens has you in the mood for a casual online shooter set in the Star Wars universe, this game can certainly provide that for a dozen or so hours. Battlefront initially checks all of the boxes for being a great Star Wars game, but its limited amount of content and lack of meaningful progression kept me from wanting to return for more than a brief visit.
Destructoid - 6/10
Star Wars Battlefront feels authentic in many ways, but that authenticity is aggressively pursued at the cost of gameplay, and is often tacked-on. If you're in the mood for a relatively shallow shooter with caveats you likely won't be disappointed, but I wish that DICE had a little more time to polish it and add more substance.
Are you feeling the force – or will you be leaving Star Wars Battlefront in a galaxy far, far away? Force choke us in the comments section below.

"Those who wanted a Battlefront III, however, will have to wait a little while longer"
Probably the most depressing thing you could write for a review of the game.
Loved the beta , it's going to be first game this generation I've bought at full price.
I was worried about it's staying power in keeping players interested longer than a couple weeks. If they release new maps every month or so, it might be worth it, but no way am I paying for that season pass at that outrageous price. Ugh. Thanks for the update, Sammy.
I was going to pre-order this. But.. something keeps holding me back.
@LieutenantFatman
The force?
cant wait loved the beta and got it pre ordered
Not surprised as it really did feel extremely shallow in the beta.
Not to mention this is DICE that's behind the game, so it's bound to be a mess.
Shame really as I would have loved a top tier Star Wars game.
It could average a 1/10. It's still going to sell like gangbusters.
I canceled my pre-order when they announced the $50 Season Pass.
"Entertaining as these deep, involving missions are, there aren’t many compelling reasons to replay a Survival mission you’ve finished."
Also, I mainly play co-op and if what the reviewer said is true then I'm glad I did canceled it.
Anyone fancy stumping up £120 for the version with all the dlc?
7/10 base game, awarded 7 for the 37 year old sound effects. I would rather watch the original film for the full immersive experience.
I was bored of the beta long before the end and cancelled my pre order on the back of it which looks like a good decision. As I feared there simply isn't enough game to justify £100, which is what it effectively is and they couldn't be bothered with a single player campaign? It'll sell well because many seem to like to spend huge amounts on mp shooters, which are effectively free extras in other games. This had the potential to be something truly special but looks more and more to be a cash in on the upcoming movie.
Got bored of the beta after 30 minutes, but I'm not really the target audience for this game. If I knew the whole thing would be £50 I might have invested, but all the extra dlc cost is not for me in this.
Loved what I had played of the beta but so many other games on my radar at the moment, would rather get rise of the tomb raider and that will keep me busy until xenoblade chronicles X comes along
IGN - Bribe from EA in progress...
Saying that i enjoyed the Beta. Will get the game but when it's a bit cheaper tho.
Great fun was had in the beta, but its too dear to buy now, best wait for a January sale price...
Ahh not much of a round up yet is it? Keep adding them! lol
I have mine on pre-order. I do have a lot of concerns and reservations about it but its 'Star Wars' and I can't deny the visuals and sound effects are superb. I don't know if this will have the longevity and I am really disappointed it doesn't have a lot of the features that previous Battlefront games had. I really hoped it had a good campaign and I was looking forward to '1313' until that was cancelled. I have owned a 'Star Wars' game on pretty much every generation from the 'arcade' version of Star Wars to Rogue Squadron, from Knights of the Old Republic to Battlefront, The Force Unleashed to Lego Star Wars..
I know there is another Star Wars game in development - which is being developed by EA Visceral with Amy Hennigs direction which has been described as "Star Wars in the style of Uncharted", and "along the same lines" as gritty and glitzy third-person action adventure Star Wars 1313 by Nolan North so that is something I am really intrigued and interested in but in the mean time, this will suffice.
I am sure I will get some value from it despite my reservations. Whether it lasts the course of time or not, it does have the potential to be fun and offer a good number of hours of play. In terms of costs, I got a good deal on my pre-order at the time (it cost me £35) and whilst I can't see me playing as many hours as Destiny for example, I can see it having a better cost per hour than some other games.
I don't see the problem season passes for game's have been £40 for year's now it's not new.
I love Battlefront 2, and I still play it every so often. But this is one of those games where it might be smarter to just get the damn GOTYE for $60. I love Star Wars but that DLC kills it for me
@xMEADx if next doors' dog laid a turd on your lawn every day for two years, you probably would get less angry over time.
The fact would remain, however, that you had a lawn full of dog eggs.
Just because publishers have carved up full price games to sell back to you for a long time does not make it ok.

Comment of the day
From what I hear, most reviewers attended that Dice Review Party thing which puts them all under legal contract to not post reviews until 9pm the day of release. And of course this is pretty common nowadays but it's really evident with the big blockbusters. Lots of sellouts who attend and then post rosy reviews nearly 24 hrs AFTER the game releases.
That was a harsh review by Videogamer. I may have only played the beta, but can say the game was fun. It may not last as long as games like Destiny and stuff, but being a battlefront game, it will last fairly good. Plus, its competition is bo3, which is a fun game, but fairly different, and fallout 4, which is completely different, And maybe even AC Syndicate, which kinda sucks.
Turned the Wii on last night, fired up Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, got all the star wars fix i needed...
Just give me an HD version of that game.
After seeing a few trusted Twitch streamers play the EA Access release, I lost all hope in this having enough content to keep me satisfied. Sounds like a decent bargain bin purchase if there's still an online community after 3-4 months.
@ReigningSemtex yes , so much yes. Fallout will have me sitting pretty till xenoblade comes out . And then ps4 wont see me for a while.lol
Just need to get use to Wii u controls, if it ported to ps4 I'd be soo happy
Monolith is owned by Nintendo so no chance of a port any time soon, the wii u pro controller is actually really quite comfortable. Xenoblade is right around the corner now I can almost taste it 😊
It's basically trash, glamorous trash that'll still sell millions of copies. Good for EA.
Updated this article with new reviews now that the embargo has lifted. Our review will follow later in the week.
It's fun, but expensive, still want it....
This exclusivity towards EA sucks! Screw you Disney, now the only way to get a good Star Wars game is if Bioware make it!
Goddamit, if only it had a campaign!
You could tell it would be fun in the beta but would grow old quick, i'm holding out for R6V no need for a season pass with that game as apparantly the map's are free and that's the only thing worth getting the season pass for.
I had this pre-ordered since it was available to, but I have cancelled my pre order this week. After playing the beta i was underwhelmed but kept my pre-order alive, but after playing a few hours on the EA all access I've decided there just isn't enough content there to purchase at full price (£42 at Amazon). Maybe if you fork out another £40 for the season pass it might feel like a full games worth.
After seeing what happened with destiny I've decided to wait for the Inevitable Game of the year edition which will likely come next year with all the dlc.
Star Wars 1313 anyone? shame.
@Johnnycide depend's what you consider a dog turd to be, I think £40 is reasonable when you get map pack's and new weapon's 4 time's for the year break it down and it's £10 for a bunch of gun's and new map's each time, it's when the publisher's of SP game's try and charge £40 for their's as well it become's a rip off. I'm not getting Star War's on release but it has nothing to do with the season pass, it's because imma waiting for R6V. Also you don't need the season pass to enjoy the game I bought BFH and put many hour's into it and never bought the season pass as the game didn't deserve it, still had plenty of fun though.
@xMEADx I'd take a turd
I like the game for what it is: a family friendly shooter. I don't know if they set out to achieve this, but this is a game that can be enjoyed with pretty much the entire family and the rating doesn't make any sense. Sure, you choke some people here and there, but overall kids won't relate this game to actual real world violence I think.
It captures the feel of SW brilliantly, it's easy to understand and pretty much pick up and play, but I don't feel this is worth $60, let alone $110. If you happen to own both the PS4 and One btw, I suggest buying it on the PS4 or at least trying it with Acces: the performance of the PS4 version is significantly better, and then I didn't even get to experience the final code like I did with the Xbox One version.
This sounds like the opposite of Fallout 4. Star wars Battlefront, lots of polish and good looks but not much substance. Fallout 4, not much looks or polish but lots of substance. I'll stick with Fallout 4. If they would make a campaign for Battlefront I would buy it.
I won't deny I picked up a deluxe edition last night. Battlefront was a huge part of my gaming life in the past, plus I liked the beta. Also, seems people who reviewed via PC version didn't enjoy playing Squadron mode with a mouse and keyboard... Watching Angry Joe's stream last night made me wonder how many people actually reviewed the console version, because whenever he'd whine about something it was usually flying with a mouse.
Meh! Unacceptable! For seasoned devs to release something "lacking in content" in a climate of games like MG5 and Fallout 4 is pretty lame... All the effort in nailing the aesthetic is pointless if the games no good.
@JoeBlogs they are all evil and dumb, if you're making worthwhile content and you feel your game should be more expensive then just put the price up. It's straight forward.
I will probably skip this. There are much better games I should get first.
I think it looks great! And people are complaining about playtime? You'll get more playtime than TLOU and Uncharted. I know I will. The game was quality in beta and looks fantastic! Season passes are ridiculously priced I agree but if you don't like whats offered don't buy. For me I will get the game and if I feel £10 is worth it per the new maps, weapons and a game mode I will buy it. We've had season passes for years? It works out slightly cheaper than buying all of the DLC separately... And if you are going to get your moneys worth I don't see the problem!

this became exactly what I expected. A pretty but shallow shooter. I have no ambition to play this at any time. Well, maybe if its on PS+ but that could take a while..
@B3ND3R The flying controls were indeed horrible in the PC beta, which is a big reason I wanted Battlefront on PS4 instead. Still very much looking forward to playing it, too, despite all the complaining around the Internet.
Ouch. While I expected the game to be somewhat mediocre, I wasn't expecting scores like this. Especially since EA doesn't shy away from trying to buy good impressions. The latest Reddit debacle where mods were bought off by EA to ban people who posted not so glowing impressions about battlefront shows just how low they are willing to go to try and get people to buy their crap.
Can't wait to play this tomorrow , haven't got time for boring games like Fallout ,Skyrim,Bloodborne etc do this quest do that quest build armour , ride a horse ,throw a dwarf ,fall in love with a digitised maiden and argue with others about who's the hottest etc , I want something I can dip in and out of for 30 mins because that's generally what my life allows .The reviewers panned Driveclub also , I loved that game from day one. Each to his own ,each to his own , I'll make my own mind up.
Anyone know if you can play multiplayer online splitscreen? It seems like too much to ask, but that would be great!
@Dief88 so far I am enjoying it greatly (on PS4).
Just logged about 2.5 hours and loving it so far.
Bought it, love it.
I was honestly not-so "blown away" by the beta, but I will still get it just to play it now and then - it surely is no time sinker like cod but quite some fun now and then i guess, especially with my clan friends ^^
@Johnnycide Well said, that's the best comment this month. I couldn't agree more.
@carlos82 I'm with you, buddy. Sadly, I lost interest as soon as I heard this was going to be multiplayer. I'm just not a fan of MP I'm afraid
I'm interested in this, but not sure I have the time with Fallout 4 being so great and such an investment. For what I got for 60 in fallout, compared to what I get for 60 with battlefront, well it's not really a comparison. Maybe I'll check it out when it hits the bargain bin, especially since EA and Disney have the rights to star wars which means we will probably see a new movie and new game every year.
Getting the game tommorow can't wait tbh my mate's are having a great time
I love SW. I'm in the 501st. I hated playing this game:
SP AI is in all seriousness the worst I've seen in years, decades maybe. They just stand there.
MP is set up so the rich get richer while the newcomers get creamed. So fun to get killed by T-21Ds and imploding grenades for a few hours straight........ Not.
The Rebels get extremely effective camouflage while the Imperials are always in white......
Everything is the ROTJ version which is plain lazy.
The TK helmet's tears and traps are blue instead of grey.
I got stuck in a rock but was still somehow able to kill the AT-ST in front of me with only an E11. Jump didn't work, so lucky I had a jump pack or I would have had to reset.
1st person is boring (no iron sights at all??) but 3rd is impossible to use with their control setup (ever played MGS4??)
The musical score is a shoddy rendition of the extremely iconic and known-by-heart themes.
The voice acting is jarringly inaccurate in terms of accents etc.
The aircraft turn as opposed to rolling, so there's auto-leveling only sometimes which makes dogfighting impossible.
There's no "take cover" mechanism or even crawling, which are pretty vital to a shooter.
The maps are TINY.
Kill tickets in SP have transformed into coins you must collect for your kills to count. I lost my first try with a better score than when I "won."
That's a total score of unlucky 13 legitimate frowny faces out of 10, which far outweighs any enjoyment I experienced. Pretty... pretty... pretty disappointed.
