Assuming a report on Digital Foundry is accurate, you may already have a PlayStation 2 emulator inside your PlayStation 4. The site tested the trio of new Star Wars games that are available as part of the firm's special edition Darth Vader system, and concluded that the company has cunningly added support for its classic console.
It's important to note that, at the time of writing, Sony has not confirmed anything. However, the aforementioned Star Wars titles include system level features such as memory card simulation, which is something that would almost certainly be added as part of an emulator. In other words, all of this was likely sneaked into a recent firmware update.
We should also stress that there's no evidence at all to suggest that you'll be able to play your disc-based PS2 games. Recent listings on the PEGI ratings board actually suggest that the retro games will be sold via the PlayStation Store, so you may want to keep hold of your old-school system if you plan on playing all of those DVDs that you own again.
While this will disappoint some, though – especially in the wake of Xbox One backward compatibility – it's important to note that Sony's solution may actually improve these classic re-releases. Digital Foundry suggests that the company may have figured out a way to incorporate Trophies into the titles, while it's also confident that each game's visuals will be improved across the board.
Which leaves us with one very pertinent question: assuming that all of this is true, which PS2 games would you be willing to purchase for your PS4 from the PlayStation Store – and how much would you pay? This author would love to revisit a title like Bully with Trophies enabled, but there are practically hundreds of others that would be worthwhile.
Share your personal wishlist in the comments section below, and let's all hope that this becomes a reality at PlayStation Experience later in the year.
Update (11:45AM GMT): Sony's now confirmed that PS2 emulation is coming to the PS4. There's more information through here. Better keep those wishlists coming, eh?

Kingdom hearts btw I never had a ps3 so I cant get the hd collection
@Get2sammyb TBH I never played any of those I know about them thou
Klonoa 2, Rogue Galaxy, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy XII...there are so many! The PS2 JRPG catalogue alone is just nuts.
Godhand
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Vol. 1 and
Vol.2
Final Fantasy XII
Dragon Quest VIII
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition
Viewtiful Joe
Dark Cloud 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4
Too many to list
Yes to the games if I had ps4 and 10.00 to 15.00 is a good price point.
Isn't this what PS Now is for, to play old games on our current consoles?
I have about 2 dozen PS2 discs and no console, but if I wanted to pay for the same game again I would want an HD port. I'm not paying again for any games I already own and still have a functioning disc for, even if I don't own a PS2, making them not functioning I suppose.
Not sure what games I own that I woul dplay again, but if PS4 played them there are several I wouild have my kids play. Oh, I think I might still own Arc the Lad and never played it, so that would be first.
Has anybody mentioned in this or the original article that BC would make a really nice announcement at PSX in a couple of weeks?
Dragon Quest VIII. Although with it coming to 3DS, I don't know how feasible that is.
Not sure what else. Persona 3 I suppose? Final Fantasy XII? Although to be honest, I'd rather have actual enhanced remasters for both of those.
How about Chicken Little? Seriously, one of the hardest games I've ever played. Nobody else still plays PS2 discs on their fatty PS3? Mine is far from retirement
@rjejr I'm the same way. I still have my PS2 games, and as long as I do, I'm not going to pay for them again. I'd honestly rather fix my PS2 up if I wanted to play them. As for PSNow, I'd rather own the game instead of renting it, so I don't use it.
All the Tenchu games since there is no new ones out there...And the Digimon games from PS1
I'm o.k with disc based PS2 games not being playable, but I'll be mad if the PS2 classics purchased on PS3 do not transfer
Not a PS2 game, a PS1 game, but I'd like a remake of Parasite Eve. Not 2, 2 sucked, it was just a lame Resident Evil wannabe, but I bought my PS1 for Parasite Eve and I can't recall a remake or reboot. Sure it had some clunky controls by todays standards, but so did Tomb Raider, and look at that now. Best thing about Parasite Eve was the story anyway, I think it could do well w/ the Lara Croft treatment.
Think I'm going to boot it up and see how time has treated it. Probably not well, but it was only about a 12-15 hour story mode, I'll spare it for the game that got me back into videogames after a 10 year hiatus.
Suikoden V because I never got to play it
@DerMeister I'd rather own than rent, but as the world moves more in that direction I've given up fighting it. Of course the rent has to be really cheap. Really really cheap.
I'd love to play some good PS2 games with smoothed out visuals. Let's see now. A number would still just be maybes due having already played them though.
Steambot Chronicles - I never played it, but it looks pretty good and I'd love to try it with the improved visuals and without having to use an actual PS2.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted -maybe
Mercenaries: Playground of Destriction -great game unlike it's beyond disappointing sequel; still only a maybe though
Transformers (maybe) - The one based off of Armada, not the movie. I loved this game as a kid. I roamed around the open-world levels for hours on end.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms X - maybe
Fatal Frame 2 - I plan to get it on PS3 sometime, but I'd rather play it on my PS4.
Jet Li's Rise of Honor - (maybe) A fun kung-fu game. I never did finish it though, so it might not be a bad opportunity.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 - I'd get this if they added online.
I'm sure there are more I'm either forgetting, or a good number that I never played that I would love to try out.
It would be great if they added PS4 and trophy support to PS2 Classics already purchased on PS3. I already have Twisted Metal: Black purchased but unplayed on my PS3, so nice to see that one announced already! A few others I have and would love to get trophies in are Red Faction I & II, the GTA "Stories" games, and Red Dead Revolver. Also, it would be really cool if these trophies displayed as being for "PS2" rather than "PS4" on the XMB!
@get2sammyb Bully was definitely one of my favourite ps2 games, I would love to play that game on ps4.
I'd surely get games i like; provided that they actually put the teophy sysytem there...otherwise I'd rather move on and not come to old games. I already have sum PS2 titles on my PS3..sure its fun to play but it aint got no trophies so ¯(ツ)/¯
Jak & Daxter, Spyro...
To be honest I doubt I would buy or play any PS2 games. Nostalgic memories are usually far better than the reality - especially as we have grown accustomed to far bigger and better games.
My main wish list: Shadow if the Colossus, Street Fighter III Third Strike, and all the Soul Reaver/Legacy of Kain PS2 games!
Klonoa
So many good games I can't list them all, but I'll put the three I'd play first and foremost if available here:
1)Rogue Galaxy - my all time favourite PS2 title
2) Bully
3) Star wars Battlefront 2
Silent Hill series, Final Fantasy series, Metal Gear series, Suikoden series, there are many favourite games.
Dragon Quest 8, FF12, Rogue Galaxy, Suikoden 5, Grandia 2+3, Okami, Persona 3 FES, the whole Shin Megami Tensei Series, Star Ocean 3
hmmm if I had to pick just one id definitely go for Dragon Quest 8
i never own a PS2 tho...
But eww... old games...
I forgot to put my real answers: Tekken Tag Tournament, Medal of Honor Frontline and Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland (for their excellent music)
I am so looking forward to remote playing some of these! lol
It would only work for me if they could slow down the speed the world rotated and give me a 30 hour day, as I don't have the time to play the games I've got, also my ps2 is already hooked up and I've got the games I wanted first time round. But hell I'd love a 30 hour day.
Vagrant story pleasseeee, crash banditcoot, fahrenheit ....
Most of the games I'd play have been suggested already. Hopefully Sony will use around a £5 price point to generate a volume of sales because from what I've seen in the source article it suggests that the emulator is doing all of the upgrading by itself. So it's simply a matter of putting what are now 15 year old games onto the store and have the PS4 do the rest.
Burnout 3 please, thank you.
Panzer Front.
Put Dark Cloud 1 & 2 up on the PSN store and I'd buy them in an instant.
@Ja-lol Vagrant Story is ps1. You can buy it on the ps vita store!!! Great game.
Burnout 3 - pure class, on par with paradise. Crash mode is fantastic.
FF12 - Played through it twice, the characters are well fleshed out and Ivalice is a brilliant world to adventure within. (same place as vagrant story and ff tactics)
Pro Evolution Soccer 4-6 - It would be nice to go back and see if I look back with rose tinted specs. This is when pro evo hit its stride.
Disgaea 1 + 2 - I'm fortunate enough to own these on Vita and they are not as good as 5, but still brilliant games.
Yes, Dark Cloud/Chronicle would be a must and so would FFXII. I never got to play Rogue Galaxy so I'd snap that up too.
I know it was a PS3 game but I'd love a remaster of White Knight Chronicles complete with running servers again for its excellent online.
Level 5 need to bring out a PS4 game that features their georama town building mechanic, I always loved that.
Klonoa 2 would be nice.
Oh Yes @getsammy2b Fahrenheit! Loved that one. I'd also go for the frantic Smackdown Games (Here Comes the Pain!!). Lol. Awesomesauce.
So many classics on PS2, but the game I remember the most fondly is probably Burnout 3, and to a lesser extent, Revenge. Just brilliant arcade racers that I plugged a lot of time into. So fun.
As I said though, there's a heck of a lot of great PS2 games. If it happens on the same scale as the PS1 classics for PS3, I'll probably browse it every now and again and pick up a few that stand out. There's also plenty that I didn't play at the time, so it'll be a good opportunity to play some gems that I missed.
So Xbox one is Xbox 360, while ps4 missed PS3 and went to ps2 I'm super confused here??
I barely have time to play my PS4 games, but I'd say Ico!
On the left: US cover inspired by Conan The Barbarian
On the right: EU cover inspired by Giorgio De Chirico
@Feena Yep Klonoa 2 for me!!! One of the most underrated games of all time. Simply brilliant platforming joy
The emulation in the Digital Foundry video was looking really good, I'd prefer downloads and emulation to a streaming service.
I would like to see games released in 60Hz though.
Silent hill 2 100%. Though I would rather Konami do what they did for resident evil and kind of re-create it with a slightly better control system
@Observer-Hunter Konami has been declared certifiably insane this point and is locked in a room murmuring to itself: "There used be a caring game company here. It's gone now."
For the backwards compatibility, I see it as a nice extra rather than a huge selling point. But, here's what I'd want most.
@Midzark The CELL processor on the PS3 is simply difficult to emulate. It sucks, but you'll never be able to play PS3 games on your PS4 outside of PlayStation Now.
There are more than two but the two I can't wait to play are:
Fatal Frame/Project Zero
Fatal Frame 3/Project Zero 3
I even sent an email to Sony requesting any kind of PS2 games support. PlayStation Now is not a good option!
@themcnoisy totally agree regarding pes. Would be nice to see how they hold up today
Culdcept
Id buy these bad boys in a heartbeat...
I would say Dragon Quest VIII, but I'm seriously hyped for the upcoming 3DS version!
I wouldn't pay more than £8 to download a game of that age. I think Dragon Quest VIII is the only game I already own that I would rebuy digitally. It's still reasonably attractive even on an HDTV as the art style is so lovely but I think cleaning up the visuals would really make it shine once more.
@mookysam The visual upgrade will make any PS2 look much better on modern screens, look at this:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-hands-on-with-ps4-playstation2-emulation
Any PS2 game you still want to play would be worth the downloading!
The Warriors.
Looooooove that game still. One of my favorite movie licenses
I don't get it, specifically the PS2, why not emulate the PS3 with it's backwards compability so we could actually play everything Sony?
Dragon Quest VIII
Dark Cloud
Dark Chronicle
Bully
Those 4 would be a must for me, I'd love them on Vita as well!
@xX_RiscazZ_Xx cos of PSnow
@xxAcesHighxx I was playing Viewtful Joe last week on my GameCube still amazing
Its certainly a stretch, but i would snatch up Bards Tale if they added it. The Katamari titles. Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. And basically everything anyone else has listed already haha.
Star Wars Battlefront 2. If only they could have just copied these ideas for the new battlefront.
@get2sammyb Thanks, I didn't know that so Mmay Thanks
@GlynCR They can have it coexisting, it would not be the first time a buy feature would work alongside a subscription/rent system, it could actually bring more people in, that would otherwise be a bit resistant to get a subscription for a couple of games they've played ages ago.
@VatoLoco47 amen brother
I think it would be easier to list which PS2 games I wouldnt want to play on PS4. I'd love to play as much of the catalog as possible.
@soracloud28 funny thing about that is I played that when I was younger and recently got an copy of it put it in and played for about and hour and realized it was n-where near as good as the fond memories I had of it. So be warned lol. But your mileage may vary too.
Edit :was meaning Dirge of Cerberus dry lol.
@ShogunRok played 12 a little bit with a friend of mine a couple weeks ago . It's one ps2 title I've went back and played that's still really good.... Dirge of Cerberus was no where near as good as I remembered tho. Disappointing really...
Narutimate accel 2 Japan version
So i love going retro and would have a huge list of games id want to replay and even bigger list of games I never got to play. Xenosaga 1 2 an 3 front mission 4 and 5 , and all the other Jrpgs like arc the lad , ring of red , ar tonelico. Alltellor iris, the darkenguard series , the 5 thousand Hack./ 's like mutation and quarantine , grandia , growlancer, lol inuyasha lol, phantsy star online , rouge galaxy, omg and MS Saga yessssss. So many titles.........
Sry to spam but almost ever thing on this list .
I'm sure this list will excite some others especially the Jrpg crowd.-
http://www.listal.com/list/jrpgs-on-playstation-2
I've got waaaaay too many current games to play to be bothering with old ones I've already probably played and likely look horribly dated and/or don't play very well.
Nice for nostalgia, but not for me thanks...
@xX_RiscazZ_Xx that's true
@Grawlog It's too bad Level-5 went all in on mobile, they replaced Squaresoft as my favorite developer. Now it's Monolith. Rogue Galaxy was highly underrated. The midway point in that game was better than the ending in most other games. That should get a real HD facelift. And I traded in my original Xenogear discs so I wouldn't mind an HD version of that either. Maybe skip the 5 hour long endless hallway.
Rogue Galaxy, FF12, DQ8, that's all I would be interested in.
I say they should incorporate a feature like Xbox did. Any games that are supported you have on disc you can insert it and it'll download it from the store, but you still need the disc to verify to play it. Like Xbox.
None! I didn't buy a PS4 to play old games with it. I play very little on my PS3. Its still hooked up so I can get the PS Plus free games. Maybe one day every 2 months. I have 2 PS2's packed away in a box. I haven't even once thought about playing any of my PS2 games.
Baldurs gate dark alliance!
Time splitters 2, Viewtiful Joe, NHL Blitz, Bully, Dead to Rights, silent Hill 2. Would pick these up with trophy support. Also wish the vita could handle this kind of emulation but from what I've heard its not even close to possible.
SOCOM 2 ONLINE if there's no online then I'll have to play with others on LAN with a program on my pc. I really hope they bring servers back tho.
The old Tony Hawk games (Especially Pro Skater 3) so I can finally play a working Tony Hawk game on PS4
too many last gen and current gen games i need to catch up on. more excited about the future. though id lov to see some sequals to some ps2 games, the first which would be BULLY 2
It'd be awesome if these ps2 games work on vita remote too! Then my ps vita can play ps1, ps2, psp, ps vita and ps4 games. oh to play bully or dragon quest viii or Fahrenheit again on handheld would be sweet.
have to be time splitters 2 the first game i ever played on the ps2
@stupidget so true! It was the perfect platforming experience...I'd choose it over Crash Bandicoot in a heartbeat.
Wait, none, not if I have to pay for them again. I'll only buy them again if it's a remake/remaster like in FFX, Kingdom Hearts and Okami's case. I bought all of those even tho I had the original discs. Odin Sphere in HD seems promising as well.
Id love to revisit The Getaway and The Getaway Black Monday
I just can't see myself paying much for a lot of these when I own them already it can get the physical copy for cheap. My OG PS3 died so I'd like to be able to play the PS2 disc in my PS4.
However if they put Rule of Rose or the .hack series on there I might pick them up because physicality copies are so expensive.
@get2sammyb Bully for sure! I had it on my 360 and never finished it because of the rrod. I am amazed it hasnt been ported to everything like GTA.
Onimusha 3: Demon Siege
Silent Hill 2&3
Dark Cloud 1&2
Jak and Daxrer
Oni
Okami
<3
Ico, Dark Cloud, Fatal Frames, Buzz, Looney Tunes Back In Action, Twisted Metal Black, Hot Shots Tennis, Hot Shots Golf 3 and Fore, Outlaw Golf 2, Outlaw Volleyball, Shadowhearts, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Jak and Daxters, Sly Coopers, Ratchet And Clanks, Dr. Muto, Vexx, Ty The Tazmanian Tigers, Spyro The Dragons, Crash Bandicoots, the Dreamworks liscenced titles, God Of Wars, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, Tak And The Power Of Juju and Summer Heat Beach Volleyball for sure. I'd Also take The Muppet's Party Cruise, Friends and The Bible Game, just to have more party titles on the PS4, but also bring back the memories of my wife and I playing the party games together.
I'd also take the Grandia series
Mega man x collection. In a PAL territor for once would be good
That's it
@617Sqn YES! Burnout 3, I'm still dreaming about it sometimes. The most fun racing this far in gaming!
Rise to honour, tmnt battle of nexus 2
Let add them all along with PSone and PSP with cross play with the vita and buy and play with the PS2 games.
Not much for going back and playing ps2 games on the big screen but if remote play via the ps vita is supported then I wouldn't mind going back to play some classics
I would love to play a remastered, not emulated, version of these games:
Everblue 2
Rez
Rumble Roses
Urban Chaos: Riot Response
Persona 4 and Resident Evil 4 please
Final Fantasy XII
Max Payne 1 & 2
Getaway and Getaway Black Monday
Syphon Filter Omega Strain (And maybe the PSP ports Dark Mirror and Logans Shadow)
Timesplitters 2 (Wouldn't mind 1 and Future Purfect either)
Battlefront 1 & 2 (Way better then the newest one in my opinion, which I do enjoy)
Gauntlet Dark Legacy
So many RPGS/JRPGS.
I wouldn't mind as many ps2 games as possible. Loved the ps2 and it's games. Special system.
@get2sammyb @whywai88 tom clancy's ghost recon advanced warfighter this game much better
For me, it is easily these two.
narutimate accel 2 or naruto ultimate ninja 5 online multiplayer would be a good one for naruto players!
