It would have been an absolute catastrophe if Halo 5: Guardians failed to top the sales charts, but it did – outselling the launch numbers of Assassin's Creed Syndicate by 50 per cent. Of course, it's worth noting that Ubisoft's open world romp through London was the poorest performing entry in the property thus far, and was on sale for a few days less.
Nevertheless, that's still a great achievement for Microsoft's flagship franchise on a single format – credit where credit's due. In other news, FIFA 16 dribbled into third as WWE 2K16 choke-slammed fourth. Grand Theft Auto V, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and Watch Dogs – boosted by bundles – rounded out the top ten, with Guitar Hero Live landing in 11th place.
One thing worth noting is the performance of Minecraft: Story Mode, which launched at retail last week. The boxed version includes the series' first episode, and a download code to redeem the rest. It entered in fifth, perhaps serving as a reminder of the popularity of Mojang's mega-hit. We've included the full top ten for your perusal below.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 31st October, 2015

- Assassin's Creed Syndicate
- FIFA 16
- WWE 2K16

That's pretty bad considering AC its multi platform. I guess it doesn't help having your last game release unfinished. Though to be fair, I would have got Halo over AC any day.
Never was much of a fan with the halo franchise. Played the very first one on the original Xbox and knew then the series wasn't for me before it even became a massive Xbox system seller. Still its not good to see such a healthy franchise struggle as the series has a loyal and dedicated fanbase. I'm sure Microsoft are not overly thrilled with the latest sales figures for their own IP.
@iv-tecman Me too.
I had the last two Xbox's and have always found Halo to be boring tbh. For me it peaked with the first game and has got worse every game since (though I haven't played the latest one).
@iv-tecman Yeah, the Halo sales don't look especially hot at all. After the Tomb Raider article I wrote, I thought it was best not to mention them, though!
Anybody paying attention to gaming this Gen would know to wait for the 1st megaGB patch before buying AC. It is funny that the one set in the UK doesn't do really well there.
How's the AC marketing over there? Between Fallout 4, Halo, DestinyTK, COD and Battlefront commercials on TV all the time I don't recall anything for AC.
Can't believe those 2 Lego games can coexist side by side so well. AC may be a yearly entry that's growing stale but Lego seems to have a new game every 6 months. At least they delayed Lego Avengers until early 2016.
@get2sammyb well I feel like Microsoft have sent tomb raider to die releasing on the very first day of fallout 4. Fallout 4 is a juggernaut compared to tomb raider. Dedicated fans will obviously pick up tomb raider, but I don't rate the next chapter in the reboot of tomb raider chances all that good.
Hopefully with tomb raider being staggered across three platforms it might pick up sales to ensure the series doesn't get laid to rest forever. As for halo, series fatigue maybe? Next weeks sales figures will be interesting , and the week after even more so....
@iv-tecman I agree with you, but the lynch mob are after me for saying much the same thing...
@iv-tecman They really didn't have much of a choice this holiday. A week before is CoD, a week after is Battlefront. Tomb Raider is in trouble no matter what. What should've been done? Release in January?
Think some of the mixed reviews coupled with the fact a lot of people seem fed up of Assassin's Creed has led to that. Shame though, I think its superb and am loving it. Well on track for the platinum trophy too which is something I only really bother with games that I really enjoy.
The smart choice, if they were insistent on releasing it amongst all the heavy hitters, was never have it be exclusive to one console. Especially cutting out the console that has sustained the franchise for the most part. That is neither here nor there at this point, though. I am not a fan of rushing games out and prefer for devs to take as much time as needed, but TR would have been better served releasing a month ago, IMO. Either way I don't think the series will die, they will give it at least one more shot without any sort of exclusivity, if it still does bad then, it will probably be toast.
Really interested to see what the sales numbers look like for Halo. If they are great I am sure Microsoft will let us know about it, if they arent, well who knows. Regardless, I think Halo is the type of game that will continue to sale pretty well up through christmas, not just for a week or two. Still completely flabbergasted how GTA5 is STILL in the top ten. Good lord that game might hit 100 million lifetime sales, ridiculous for a game that wasn't even that great IMO.
@Tulio517. Yes probably. But they were going for the tagline 'best line up in Xbox history ' so it had to release this year.
@3Above Yeah... I feel bad for the TR team though. I'm sure the game's great.
@Tulio517 well yes it is a problem, its releasing into a very crowded month of big hitters. But it doesn't help its only available on Xbox 1, but then if it was across all platform's and released in say march 2016 its then up against uncharted, so its looking to be a title that's just going to have to stand up for itself. Time will tell I guess.
@Tulio517 Honestly? Yes.
@get2sammyb @iv-tecman what is this Tomb Raider you speak of? 😃
I can't read or see straight. Fallout 4.
I am extremely unhappy with the Halo reviews on some other sites - most of them read like a 7/10 or less then up pops a 9 or 10. I'm perplexed how obviously rotten the (paid for) reviews are. This is coming from a Halo fan.
As for some of the comments above Halo 1-3 are all brilliant, unsure how it 'cant be' for anyone the games at the time were second to none. I understand if you played it round at your mates and didn't click straight away, but give them time and they get better and better. Halo Reach is one of the best games ever.
@themcnoisy
I actually like this Halo a lot. If it would've been just a multiplayer game it would've scored higher imo, which is bs cause who really plays Halo campaign for its story? I did miss the split screen though. But Arena is great and Warzone a must play if you're in some info FPSs.
Tomb Raider should have launched earlier this year, or in May 2016 to go up against Uncharted: you would be surpirised how many people would've bought TR just to say they have an UC of their own.
@Boerewors who really plays Halo campaign for its story?
I did. Or more true - the story levels. I finished 2, 3 and ODST on Legendary. Reach I got mullered on an impossible level but all the other levels completed legendary. The original Halo is too hard without help and 4 was crap (Imo) So I love the story missions.
Yay! I really don't care for Halo, but Ass Creed needs to fail as almost everything from Ubisoft! Good job Halo's Studio!
@rjejr I've seen a fair few tv spots and makes it look like a good adventure. Maybe the carrot wasn't big enough for everyone?
@MaseSco "Maybe the carrot wasn't big enough for everyone?"
I want to blame it on the carrot being old and stale, but then COD and Halo kind of destroy that argument, don't they? Battlefront and Fallout 4 look new enough, it's been awhile for Fallout.
I enjoyed the first Halo and Reach campaigns. I never played the multiplayer because it's not my thing.
Why the heck is Watch Dogs still on here?
I'm not surprised it topped the charts but as a fan of the series I can say the hype that has been there in the past really doesn't seem to be there to 5. There's lots of things that could be attributed to that but the biggest is how badly 343 dropped the ball with what should've been the greatest remastered collection of all-time, and that was off what many people considered the worst Halo game in 4. I actually think Halo 5 is a great game though and it will do well in North America. Outside of NA, we'll see how it does this holiday and if it has the desired effect for MS.
@Boerewors
I actually play Halo in large part because of the campaign and I think a lot of others do as well. But I do agree with you grading it based mainly on that is crazy. It'd be like Uncharted 4 getting scored on it's multiplayer alone.
@get2sammyb
You're actually not wrong that for saying Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to fail. I said it when the deal happened that some deals don't make sense and that one made no sense. You're just wrong about the voice actress and your delight in seeing the series fail is kind of annoying but that's because I'm a fan of the TR series since Crystal Dynamics took over and I want to see it continue. That said, I don't stick my head in the sand like some people. SE killed this the series. I hope MS' blood money was worth it.
@rjejr Marketing for games is pretty weird. Less and less people are watching TV here, and those that do are an ageing population that generally don't play games. I don't even have a TV. BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4 don't have any adverts at all, either, so even if you did watch them, you'll not see a single ad.
So I guess here it's just down to posters in the street and on the side of buses. Can't say I ever really notice any for games, myself. You have online ads but everyone uses an adblocker nowadays anyway. I think most of a publisher's ad money must go towards bribing IGN and Gamespot.
@Gamer83 As I've said elsewhere on this site, it would actually have been a good idea if Uncharted 4 actually came out when it was supposed to, this Christmas. It would have had its PS4 sales pretty badly torn into by UC4, so why not dodge a bullet, delay it on PS4 till next year and get a fat pile of cash off MS in the process? Now they just look silly and the series is going to suffer. I'm sure it'll recover, it's gone through worse patches than this and it wasn't until the 2013 reboot that it sold anywhere near as much as the original trilogy. It's the only game in the top 5 best selling Tomb Raiders that wasn't released before 1999, according to VGchartz.
@Matroska
Uncharted 4 wouldn't have hurt TR any worse than Halo 5 will.
The physical minecraft game is just 1 episode and a download code? That's gross man I don't want that.
@Matroska All you hear about in the US is how everybody is cutting cords and switching to Netflix, but then millions of people spend all day every Sunday watching football which is full of videogame ads. And Saturday watching college football. And March watching college basketball. As long as there are sports there will be commercials. Though I guess in the rest of the world watching soccer you dont' have as much need for commercials. Baseball has 18 built in commercial breaks every game as it's base, and there are always ways to find more.
It's probably due to the simple fact that people are saving their cash for the lives of black ops 3,fallout 4 & star wars battlefront
@iv-tecman I don't care much for Halo, but I really hope Tomb raider does good. I've been a fan since the very first and I loved the reboot. I don't have an xbone but I will buy it for ps4 day one. It would be so sad if the Tomb raider franchise dies.
@Matroska yes I think your right. Gamers get their info about what's coming online from site's like ign and push square. I'm not sure TV ads are even worth the money.
