As we've known for quite a while now, the PlayStation 4 is seemingly unstoppable when it comes to sales. Sony's latest machine is officially the fastest-selling console of all time at this point, and if it keeps it up, it'll end up doing even better than the PlayStation 2, which just seems crazy.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, stated that "We've just seen the most successful Black Friday in the company's history," adding: "We are now trying to benchmark against the success of the PlayStation 2 - or exceed it if possible."
Now, we already know that Black Friday was a success for the Japanese company here in the UK, where the PS4 managed to edge out the Xbox One, but we won't know the outcome in America until November's NPD report, which is expected to be published on Thursday. However, it's safe to say that House's comments make it sound as though Sony did extremely well.

Sony has pretty much won this Gen unless they get complacent and really mess up. I guess that E3 where the Xbox One and PS4 debuted really hurt MS. I mean yeah it was a bad decision with the DRM and always online policies but I didn't think it would have hurt them this much.
I mean MS has some great games lined up and have some great games out but it just seems they can't catch Sony.
This gen turned out to be very interesting.
@Tasuki
Even if they get complacent, which some would argue already happened, or mess up real bad, they'd still win this gen. Sony's audience around the world is simply much bigger and where your typical American customer adopts a new console earlier, in the rest of the world it's spread out more evenly. We saw this with the PS3 where with some nice exclusives, but ultimately brand power, they managed to catch up and even surpass 360 sales and this time around they're even more succesfull than the Xbox in the countries that were deemed MS territory.
There's f.i. the sleeping giant that is Brazil that is yet to awaken and since Sony has its own PS4 production line there since recently, (insane) prices will come down soon. And there are other (developing) countries where PS is a household name, mainly because they grew up playing PS2, and when they are able to afford a PS4, the real millions will start to flood in. Xbox as a brand was very much on the rise but they managed to snap their own neck at what I think was a crucial moment in gaming history: what could've been MS' PS2, became their PS3 and without Playstation's brand power throughout the entire world I don't see them recovering.
Is Sony leading by this much good for the industry? I don't think it is. But maybe the NX will blow us out of the water or maybe VR will show Sony was indeed busy being Sony, just on another project.
@Tasuki
Why does it have to be because Microsoft messed up? Sony dominated with the PS1 and PS2. And the PS3 even though it was very expensive, came a year later, and had tech that took years for developers to utilize, still sold as many as Microsoft sold 360s. So the PS4 selling so well is not because of any misstep on Microsoft's end (although that E3 did not help!) its because Sony makes a damn good product and people know it.
Agree
2016 - The Nintendo NX is being released, PC will extend the gap in performance with 4k gaming and Firesticks are taking off finally.
Sonys fight has only just begun.
@themcnoisy They were going to talk more about the NX in 2016, nobody has said anything about revealing it, let alone releasing it. Besides, it could be a handheld console as well, we don't know anything yet.
@Octane 2016 - The Nintendo NX is being released, PC will extend the gap in performance with Hologram gaming screens and Robots will play our games for us. Half Life 3 will be released and a good Sonic game will receive rave reviews, the new 3d Mario game will suck and Don Mattrick will become ceo at Nintendo. Sony will make first party games for Vita, David Cameron will switch to Labour and Elvis will set a new high score on the Fifa 16 bronze crossing challenge.
Hope that's better for you. Who was I kidding 4k gaming will hit in 2017, sorry man.
I think Sony is getting complacent. Which worries me. Hopefully they decide to pick it back up next quarter. Or fans may start to get angry.
Sony is #1 and it will stay that way at this point Microsoft wont catch up. But the real truth is both are doing very well selling millions of consoles! With number like that they both win. Both are making millions in profit Sony is making more. But I would love to have the earnings even of Microsoft Xbox for one year!
Sony is not complacent They are making exclusive deals for content. They are getting ready to launch Playstation VR (this may be a really big thing) They work along side many Devs in software development. No one in Sony is sitting back enjoying the show. They are hard at work still creating it.
@themcnoisy Not sure if that was a joke or not.. I couldn't tell..
@Octane yeah it was a joke. Hopefully we will get more info next year.
I looked into it when you commented and your right. That's why I put Half-life 3 will be released etc etc. I did say sorry too. Should get my facts right first.
@themcnoisy English isn't my native language, and sarcasm/jokes are difficult to tell on the internet, so I'm not always sure how to respond, haha.
I've got a feeling that people are setting themselves up for disappointment if they are expecting Nintendo to release a home console, in 2016, that's somehow amazing and will ''win back the audience Nintendo lost''. Especially considering that the dev kits are only out for a month or so if those rumours are true. I'm keeping my expectations low, that's all I know.
@Octane English is my first Language - and to be honest the comment was meant to be funny, but wasn't, it was poorly written.
I agree Nintendo are facing an uphill struggle. But never say never.
@Sevein here here!
I don't think Nintendo will even try to make the NX a co.peritor of the ps4 or xbox 1. I have a sneaking feeling they will launch a strange hybrid gimmick system to try and capture the casual crowd and it will more than likely fail. Just my opinion.
@SonyInfinity
From the way the new Nintendo president is talking it seems like it will be 'unique' but I don't think they're only going to go for casual. He knows they made mistakes with Wii U and going for the casual crowd again with a tablet-like controller was one of those mistakes.
@thedevilsjester Agreed. In fact, the PS3 overtook the 360 eventually. The latter was always doing worse across Asia and Europe, and while they were undeniably big hits, the major franchises like Halo and Gears were never as popular (in absolute numbers or per capita) outside of NA. About two-thirds of Halo 4 were sold in NA alone. Uncharted 3 was more popular in Europe than Halo 4.
In other words, Microsoft have never ended a generation ahead yet for some reason people (specifically our American cousins) seem to think they're some kind of titan that Sony had to overpower and only got a foot on the ladder because MS screwed up somehow. The Xbox line is a mess, the fact Playstation goes "1", 2, 3, 4 whereas the Xbox goes "1", 360, One, speaks volumes.
@Matroska Its a mix of revisionist history and blind fanboyism. The fact of the matter remains that with three of the four Sony consoles, they have dominated the market (assuming the PS4 continues its trend) and in the fourth system (the PS3) they were neck and neck with the 360, despite the later arrival, higher cost, and difficulty to develop for.
Its not surprising when Sony is winning; its their default position. Its surprising when they fail.
