Gravity Rush 2 PS4 PlayStation 4 1

What a year it's been for video game revivals. Obviously the likes of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue III are dominating the headlines, but it's so nice to see Keiichiro Toyama's underrated Gravity Rush franchise make a return as well. In the build up to the Japanese release of Kat's inaugural topsy-turvy adventure, SCEJ has been hosting a livestream dedicated to the series – and 11 minutes of gameplay footage from its sequel have emerged.

The clip takes a while to get started, but stick with it. For the first half, the developer talks about the new Photo Mode that's being added to the game, which will allow you to put up props and position the heroine around them. You'll also be able to use this feature to reveal secrets to your friends – it's all part of the studio's ambition to keep you connected. Time Attacks with leaderboards and ghosts are also under consideration, apparently.

But while taking snapshots and engaging in races is all well and good, we want to know about the moment-to-moment gameplay. Fortunately, the stream shows off plenty, including Kat's three stances. As revealed earlier in the year, in addition to her normal abilities, she'll also be able to toggle between Lunar and Jupiter modes – the former making her lighter and more mobile, while the latter will give her additional strength but slow her down.

Other tweaks to the combat include the appearance of Raven, who'll be able to support the protagonist as a tag-team partner during specific story events. The studio says that it's looking into making her a playable character, too – though it's undecided at this stage. As for the world – well, it promises to be bigger than Hekseville with a South American flavour. Just judging from this gameplay clip, it looks much busier than the Vita game.

The developer's also saying that the campaign will be longer, with more meaningful side-quests and a much bigger world to explore. It's all music to this author's ears, as he's long been a proponent of Japan Studio's open world adventure. Are you looking forward to turning the world upside down in Gravity Rush 2?
