The new trailer may have had its fair share of real-time combat, but Final Fantasy VII Remake won't be entirely action-based according to producer Yoshinori Kitase. Speaking as part of a new video on PlayStation's official YouTube channel, the veteran explained that while more active battle systems are the rage right now, Square Enix won't forget the title's roots.
"What makes Final Fantasy and RPGs different from other games is that the players have the ability to choose weapons, capabilities, and magic to be strategic minded, so while the new game has more real-time elements, it will also maintain that strategy building element, balancing these two factors perfectly to enhance the gaming experience," he said.
Kitase-san also gave a brief update on the game's progress, revealing that he's really impressed with the performance of the PlayStation 4. "The game is still in development, and we have not fully grasped all the abilities of and upgrades made to the PS4," he added. "The graphics are superb, and more polygon volume is available to make it better."

I just looked at the incredible job they've done with the opening section of the game in the trailer and figured that if they can do that they can maintain the same high quality to all the other relevant parts of the game - summons, limit-breaks, materia development, chocobos, even squats and cross-dressing. Combat is just one tiny part of the whole, pretty sure they won't muck it up.
I love Final Fantasy VII very much, but let's not pretend that 99% of all battles weren't just hammering "X" (or "O") to repeatedly click "Attack". It wasn't until you got to certain bosses, particularly the Weapons, that you put any more thought in than that. I can still enjoy that, as my 140 hours played for the Steam version attests, but it's not like some piece of crystallised perfection that mustn't be touched. They already flirted with real-time in the original ATB system, at VII's release there hadn't been a turn-based FF since FFIII (and not since FFI in North America), so this is just the realisation of that when they have better hardware to work with.
I still prefer turn-based RPGs. :/
I would appreciate that, but I would be surprised if it even has similar depth to main series Kingdom Hearts.
I wish they had just kept it turnbased, but I suppose that's what happens when Nomura's team has done nothing except action-rpgs since the PS2 days.
I hope they're right, mainly because I don't want to sit through "this sucks because no turn based" comments again, but it would be a massive waste of the title's potential to just make it "beat things with BIG sword until win". As much as I love Kingdom Hearts, they're mostly easy games. Even though they're somewhat similar in their own way, I would love to see the action style gameplay get a better strategic edge that is rather uncommon for games like that.
Looks great, I just hope they don't change the story touch.
i like the look of the new game play after all times have changed and this IS a Remake after all not a Remaster so why not bring it up to date?
plus it looks like it plays a bit like Kingdom Hearts and i love that game play
now just keep the Motorbike mini game in and we are golden
I have no faith in SE "balancing these two factors perfectly". But I'm always willing to try something new...it just isnt something that harkens back to the original FF7. I see this more as a re-imagining, similar to the new Ratchet and Clank.
Personally, I've never been a fan of how SE handles their modern combat mechanics.
Fair enough, impressed with everything they've shown so far.
@get2sammyb Uh oh, I heard something bad. It may be an episodic release.... I'm kinda unsure though... Heres the link.

I hope that this proves false. This would be a horrible move.
@Alpha If this is true, I'm going to wait and see what happens first. Everyone seems to have gone into meltdown when they really don't know too much about it.
Look's the part i'd prefer turn based but meh, FFVII was my first ever RPG I really got into so i'm excited.
I heard about the episode release formula I hope it is not true
