As the old adage goes: one app is never enough, so why not have another one? Sony's whipped PlayStation Network messaging functionality out of the PlayStation app, opting to create a standalone PlayStation Messages app to complement it. Available right now for iOS and Android devices, the free download promises to help you "contact your friends in a quicker and easier way than ever before".
Should you download the software for your smartphone or tablet, you'll be able to check up on your pals, send messages, upload photos, and more. It's a shame that the Japanese giant couldn't keep all of this under one umbrella, as you'll still need the PlayStation app to manage downloads on your PlayStation 4. Then again, if it's good enough for Facebook, right?

Not sure if I'm just that old but there's too many messenger apps already. WhatsApp, Snapchat, FB messenger, SMS. Why would I ever need this?
Meanwhile, Amazon users are STILL waiting for the REGULAR PlayStation App. :/
@Stuffgamer1 America is strange why is everything is the USA so difficult with internetproviders it look like the big company have everything to say. For me its even more strange that a app has to be greenlighted bij different providers....
A separate app? Was there some official app for iOS? What was it for? I was looking for an app that lets me check progress on trophies ans such but could not find any official solution for that. Is there any?
Not a bad idea. Just think they are a tad late to the party.
I absolutely despise this. I don't know anyone who uses PS messages on a regular basis, so the PS app was neat to check for that one message I could get. Not gonna install a separate app for it.
@maamets Yes, it's called PlayStation App: https://www.playstation.com/explore/ps4/features/playstation-app/
Well this is a stupid idea. They should have just kept it under the original app like in terms first place. Hopefully not to many people will download this and it will cause Sony to rethink this idea and put it back the way it was. Guess I won't be using PSN messenger now.
I think its great, have used it a few times already today, its quick and easier than having to navigate using the old app.
Does make me laugh reading the replies to the announcement on twitter. Its free, don't like it don't download it jesus, I swear the internet is full of complaining self rightous douche.... Oh wait nm..
If your part of a crew or clan or whatever then its useful, & faster than the PS app itself. Dont see the cause for negative reactions..
@Flaming_Kaiser You misunderstand. Amazon has a special curated app store for Kindle Fire devices. It's not an internet provider situation at all...more akin to asking why a game is on Origin but not Steam for example. Google Play is famously open, but Amazon App Store takes effort that some devs feel isn't worth the bother, leaving people without standard Android devices out in the cold.
Nice app
I only use the PS app for messaging, and find it slow, so if this is quicker, great!
It's more than likely due the app size limit in the android play store @get2sammyb adding the messaging app might have made it too big.
@Stuffgamer1 I didnt know that still why does everyone wants to build a different version its beyond me. Im lucky with my small country the Netherlands. Not making to much sense making all different stuff here. I can understand in the US everyone wants a piece of the cake. I dont know how many of their customers use the kindle divices. Maybe you should try it on the forums of Sony.
I am really confused what's happening but today as I have updated my iPhone 7 from iOS 10 to the latest iOS 11.3 now as I open the Playstation app it simply loads a blank white screen on startup and crashes itself gradually after few seconds. Any idea how do I get it working again?
