All that we've seen of Dragon Quest XI so far is a nice looking tech demo, and for that reason, we've always assumed that the finished product is a long way off. It comes as no surprise, then, that Square Enix has put a tentative May 2017 launch window on the game - and that's only for Japan.
The publisher is actually aiming to release the colourful role-playing title before then, but even if it hits that target, we reckon that the West won't be seeing it until late 2017. Let's just hope that it's worth the wait, eh?
Are you eager to see more of Dragon Quest XI, or are there far too many other games on your horizon right now? Slay some next-gen slimes in the comments section below.

well isn't the game meant to be on Nintendo NX as well, so i don't think it will release until that system has
plus a english release hasn't even been confirmed yet so we might not get it at all much like DQX
still DQ VII is on the way this year so that should tide me over
Makes sense really. Square Enix will want to focus on Final Fantasy XV this year anyway - that's a big one.
Didn't they already say that they wanted a world wide release on this? Maybe I am thinking of something else. Plus I kinda feel like this will be closely tied to the NX and will be a launch title for them.
@get2sammyb They really need to get FFXV out in 2016, this can wait. We just had DQ Heroes, DQH2 is due out in Japan in the spring, and DQ Builders is out in Japan the end of the month. How much DQ does 2016 need?
And Star Ocean is coming out in May in Japan, autumn in the west, also published by Squenix. BTW you missed this:

DQXI in 2017 is fine. Now where's Kingdom Hearts 3?
It's SquareEnix, I wouldn't expect it until 2021.
@FullbringIchigo No, that was a false rumour that came out of nowhere. It's announced only for PS4 and 3DS, with the 3DS version effectively being a different game that just tells the same story with the same characters. The two games have different producers. There's no producer for the NX. It's not being worked on unless it's a total secret for some reason.
They were asked about an NX version and they said they'd consider it maybe. For some reason a lot of gaming news sites all copied a misreport from a single gaming news site that was apparently written by an incredibly hopeful Nintendo fan. You had Kotaku with headlines like "DQXI announced for PS4, 3DS and NX". They still have the same headline up now, but then at the top of the article it says "Update: Were were contacted by Square Enix notifying us of a discrepancy between what they said and what we reported".
They said that SE did actually say XI was coming to the NX during the announcement - yet the slideshow they had behind the announcement clearly stated it was only for the PS4 and 3DS, as did the official site and all other materials. I'm not sure why ran with that rumour and why they seemed so reluctant to correct themselves.
As above it's only been announced for the PS4 & 3DS, I'm looking forwards to it but it's some time off yet.
@Matroska I really think it is coming to the NX but Square spilled the beans on it and quickly back peddled saying it was a rumor to cover their mess up.
@Tasuki It's possible but I don't know why they'd try to keep it a secret when they've already announced DQX for it (I think) and DQXI is on another Nintendo platform as well. I do admit that it's an odd thing to accidentally say, if that's what actually happened, it just doesn't make sense for them to hold back that info. Well, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility for a publisher to do something that doesn't make sense, I guess.
