2016 is shaping up to be a major year for the PlayStation 4, and while we can't wait to get our grubby mitts on many of the system's upcoming titles, we thought that we'd take this opportunity to think about potential games that haven't been officially announced yet. As such, we've come up with a list of 12 titles that we'd love to see announced for PS4 in 2016. Some are perhaps a little unrealistic, but overall, we'd like to think that we've put together a selection that seems feasible – at least to some degree.

Crash Bandicoot PS4

Shawn Layden's a clever sod, and we refuse to believe that that Crash Bandicoot tee wasn't a tease. Indeed, the last time that the executive mentioned an old favourite he personally ensured that Vib Ribbon released on the PlayStation 3 and Vita, and so we expect him to be on all-fours outside Bobby Kotick's office begging for Sony's maniacal marsupial back any minute now. Hint: a case full of fifty dollar bills should do the trick, Shawn.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen HD

Bringing grand adventure and glorious boss fights to PC later this month, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is a game that more than deserves another shot on consoles, too. Capcom's open world role-playing release sports fantastic combat and is as atmospheric as they come, so we'd jump at the chance to experience it all again – this time with a lovely smooth frame rate.

Dynasty Warriors 9

Almost an inevitability at this point, we all know that there's a new Dynasty Warriors game just around the corner – but we're actually looking forward to seeing where Koei Tecmo decides to take this long running franchise. After all, with the PS4 now leading the way in Japan, we'd like to imagine that the latest hardware will act as the primary development platform, which potentially means bigger battlefields and even more enemies on screen at once. We doubt that Dynasty Warriors 9 will be a revolution, but we can definitely see some big changes coming to the series.

God of War PS4

There's a new God of War in development, this much we know – but Sony Santa Monica is acting like director Cory Barlog didn't accidentally spill the beans all the way back in 2014. As such, this is one game that we'd love to see announced over the course of the coming year – primarily so that we can stop erroneously including it in our pre-press conference predictions articles. New protag and mythology, please – bring back doofus deity Kratos at your own peril.

Life Is Strange 2

Nobody likes a rushed sequel, but DONTNOD's got to strike while the iron is hot with Life Is Strange 2. Max and Chloe's angsty adventure was a breath of fresh air in an industry dominated by big guns and even bigger biceps, and as such, we're already, er, ready to wear our heart on our tattoo sleeve with another dose of teen drama. A different cast with the same dainty vibe would very much be appreciated – just swap the dodgy ending for something a little more down-to-earth this time.

Mass Effect Trilogy HD

Arguably the most deserving set of games from the PS3 era that should be remastered on PS4, the Mass Effect trilogy's absence on new-gen consoles is baffling to say the least. With that in mind, we're hoping that BioWare has simply been saving the announcement for later this year. Indeed, re-releasing the trilogy a few months before Mass Effect: Andromeda hits store shelves seems like a pretty logical strategy to us.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor 2

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor won our coveted Game of the Year award back in 2014, but after ruminating on that decision over the last 12 months, some of the staff here at Push Square now disagree with the choice. Monolith's sandbox slash-'em-up did a lot of things right, especially with its nemesis system stealing a lot of headlines, but a poor plot and a cast of crappy characters failed to measure up to the often stellar gameplay. Riding on that reasoning, we reckon that an improved sequel could be something really special.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Look, we know that Rockstar likes to take its sweet time, but it's just taking the pißwasser now. Red Dead Redemption ripped up the record books around the same time that cowboy costumes were considered fashionable outside of hen parties, so it's about time that it saddled up and brought us a sequel. The label likes to release a new title every year, but it's been coasting on the evergreen Grand Theft Auto V for what feels like an eternity now. Surely it's time to swap Los Santos for the Wild West?

Saints Row V

Saints Row IV was a heck of a lot of fun, but that didn't stop it from feeling a lot like an expanded version of Saints Row: The Third. With some time in the oven, we think that a true sequel could turn out to be a hit, but we're just not sure where the franchise could go next. We suppose that some sort of reboot may be in order - especially after that ending – but other than that, how do you top celebrity gang lords becoming the super powered saviours of mankind? We'll hopefully find out later this year.

Sleeping Dogs 2

Wei Shen's PS3 adventure was a fantastic sandbox surprise, and we'd love to see Asia's criminal underworld resurface in 2016. With a bigger budget and deeper gameplay, Sleeping Dogs 2 could easily become one of the PS4's most enjoyable open world escapades – especially if its story hits the same highs as its predecessor. Still, it's hard not to feel as though the ship's already sailed with this one, but we'll keep believing all the same.

The Last of Us 2

Naughty Dog may have spent approximately 10,000 years building and then re-building Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, but with its stubbled star on the brink, we're hoping that it'll finally be able to leverage the power of the PS4 to accentuate the grey hairs in The Last of Us' anti-hero's beard. Actually, we think that Joel may very well be a goner in the survival horror's inevitable sequel, but Ellie will surely make a comeback – potentially packing swimming powahs this time.

WipEout PS4

We don't care who makes it – we just want a WipEout game on PS4. The now closed Studio Liverpool had something truly special with its eye-melting futuristic racing franchise, and we'd love nothing more than to see it make a blistering return on Sony's latest console. Throw some PlayStation VR support in there and we'll be practically begging to give it a shot and throw up all over the office floor - heck, we'd even settle for a port of WipEout HD at this juncture.
