Republished on Saturday, 2nd January 2016: We're bringing this article back from the archives as we look back at some of Push Square's features from 2015. The original text follows.

Originally published on Monday, 16th November 2015: We're at the tail end of the crazy Christmas releases period now, and inevitably our attention is beginning to wander to next year. But while we're generally an argumentative lot here at Push Square Towers, we're all in agreement on one thing: 2016 is shaping up to be the PlayStation 4's biggest year to date.

We decided to put together an article to illustrate that, and if you've already scrolled to the bottom before reading this introduction, you'll see why. If you haven't read on yet, though, you'll find 25 upcoming titles that we think are going to be big next year on Sony's new-gen box. Sure, we haven't included every single game – there are many, many more – but that alone makes our point even more potent.

The question is: which of these are you most looking forward to – and how many of your favourites did we miss? Don't forget to let us know in the comments section below.

Dark Souls III

From Software's established approach to action role-playing games may be wearing a little thin, but with Bloodborne being one of the best games of 2015, we've no concerns over the quality of Dark Souls III. Expect enormous bosses with the best names in the biz and some brilliant artwork across the board.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Building upon what was already a pretty good game in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is all about giving you even more freedom when it comes to approaching and completing missions as augmented super-agent Adam Jensen. Whatever style of play that you choose to flaunt, everything that we've seen of Mankind Divided so far points to an engaging and polished futuristic affair.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Hitting PS4 as well as the Vita in early 2016, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth looks like the Digimon title that many fans have been waiting years for. Combining monster collection with dungeon crawling and stylish turn-based battles, Cyber Sleuth could end up scratching that traditional Japanese role-playing game itch – at least to some degree.

2016_fea_scr_5.jpg

DOOM

When DOOM was blown wide open at Bethesda's E3 2015 press conference, it was clear that developer id Software was putting its focus on one thing and one thing only: the shooting. Boisterous and satisfyingly brutal, the franchise's first new-gen outing looks set to make a dent in 2016. Sure, we doubt that it'll do much to reinvent the genre, but we all know that DOOM's going to be bloody fun – with an emphasis on bloody.

2016_fea_scr_6.jpg

Far Cry Primal

Yes, the Ubisoft formula's getting real repetitive – but Far Cry Primal will find you climbing towers in the Stone Age. In an industry dominated by sci-fi and fantasy worlds, we're hopeful that this historical sandbox will bring something a little different to the table. Plus, who doesn't want to ride a woolly mammoth?

2016_fea_scr_7.jpg

Final Fantasy XV

Oh look, it's that game that we've been writing about for almost a decade – what could we possibly have left to say? On a serious note, though, Final Fantasy XV could be something special – assuming that it ever actually makes its way onto store shelves. Makes us believe, Square Enix.

2016_fea_scr_8.jpg

Firewatch

One of the many "lower profile" titles that will help contribute to the PS4's success in 2016, Firewatch sees you assume the role of a lookout ranger in the Wyoming wilderness. With talent from Telltale working on the title and artwork from Olly Moss, we anticipate that this will be one of the breakout hits of next year.

2016_fea_scr_9.jpg

Gravity Rush Remastered

Even after just one game, Kat remains one of the more promising protagonists on PlayStation. And with Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama busy beavering away on Gravity Rush 2, it's exciting to see the Vita original making the low-gravity switch to the PS4. This game's a known quantity, but we can't wait to see how Auldnoir transfers to the big screen.

2016_fea_scr_10.jpg

Hitman

It may have the strangest rollout method in AAA history, but IO Interactive seems to be returning to Agent 47's immaculately tailored roots with reboot Hitman. Gorgeous sandbox playpens packed with murderous potential headline this stealth-'em-up, which is sure to find you getting creative with your kills for weeks.

2016_fea_scr_11.jpg

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Free from the shackles of the Killzone series, Horizon: Zero Dawn is shaping up to be a seriously successful new series for Dutch developer Guerrilla Games. Billed as an open world role-playing game, the studio appears to be injecting the very best of Monster Hunter into a visually stunning post-post-apocalyptic setting. The potential's high for this one.

2016_fea_scr_12.jpg

Mafia III

Assuming that new developer Hangar 13 can step away from the Grand Theft Auto comparisons that have plagued the Mafia series since its inception, then its third instalment could make you an offer that can't be refused. Set in New Orleans in 1968, Mafia III's aiming to spin a yarn all about inequality and the importance of loyalty.

2016_fea_scr_13.jpg

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Literally taking the franchise to another galaxy, Mass Effect: Andromeda could easily end up being one of 2016's biggest deals. We obviously need to see a lot more of the game itself, but we have confidence in BioWare and what it supposedly wants to bring to the franchise with this upcoming instalment. We'd expect to finally see this sci-fi romp get the attention that it deserves at E3 next year.

2016_fea_scr_14.jpg

Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Fans of the original Mirror's Edge managed to keep the Faith [Sorry – Ed] for seven years, and it's paid off: Mirror's Edge Catalyst is honestly looking outstanding. DICE has clearly been given the go-ahead to make this release as a bit of a passion project, and the love really comes across; the first-person parkour-'em-up controls like a dream – and it looks stunning, too.

2016_fea_scr_15.jpg

NieR Automata

Despite cultivating a cult following, the original NieR never quite became a household name. We doubt that its sequel will either, but with Platinum Games at the helm, it's looking to really elevate its predecessor's gameplay. With some cool character designs and outrageously fast action, this is an outing well worth keeping an eye on.

2016_fea_scr_16.jpg

No Man's Sky

Hello Games' ambitious space sim seems to grow in importance with each showing – and seeing as it's been at practically every press conference since 2013, expectations are unsurprisingly at astronomical levels right now. Whether or not No Man's Sky can actually deliver is impossible to determine, then – but we can tell you that it's going to be a big deal in 2016.

2016_fea_scr_17.jpg

Persona 5

We all know that it's going to be good, so waiting for Persona 5 to actually release is the main problem here. As intriguing and as effortlessly stylish as ever, slaying shadows will no doubt be a staple activity of 2016. What's more, the franchise is really on the cusp of catapulting into stardom following the success of Persona 4 and all of its subsequent spin-offs. Let's just hope that Europe isn't kept waiting this time around.

2016_fea_scr_18.jpg

PlayStation VR

Alright, we know what you're thinking: PlayStation VR isn't a game. However, Sony's virtual reality headset threatens to slather another layer of craziness on top of what is already shaping up to be an enormous year for the platform holder. We've tasted the tech and it definitely works – now all we need are some finished titles.

2016_fea_scr_19.jpg

Ratchet & Clank

While we've tried to include as many fresh and interesting titles in this article as we can, we're quite comfortable with Ratchet & Clank offering more of the same. Insomniac Games' re-telling of the first title looks and plays exactly as you'd expect it to – but after over ten years working on the franchise, it's honed its craft. From the little snippets that we've played, it could threaten A Crack in Time's crown.

2016_fea_scr_20.jpg

Shadow of the Beast

Brutal, eye-catching, and boasting a great gameplay flow, Shadow of the Beast may not be the most high profile title on this list, but it's certainly one that we're looking forward to. Blending almost rhythmic action with plenty of gore, it's not a subtle game, but it is downright enjoyable. If it can keep its claws dug into us throughout its finished form, then we'll be in for one heck of a satisfying ride.

2016_fea_scr_21.jpg

Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness

Forget about the franchise's past mistakes along with this entry's daft name, and Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness [Urgh - Ed] is looking pretty good. Boasting a colourful cast of characters, expansive adventuring, and an action-packed battle system, the series' fifth instalment could well be the most ambitious entry yet. If it all comes together in the finished product, 2016's RPG lineup just got even better.

2016_fea_scr_22.jpg

Street Fighter V

The brawler with a plan, Street Fighter V's life begins early next year, and it'll be kept ticking with fresh playable characters and regular game updates. If its network tests are anything to go by, then the title's already got a confirmed placement in the competitive fighting game scene, and we can't wait to see it show up at all of next year's big tournaments – we've been watching Street Fighter IV for what seems like an eternity, after all.

2016_fea_scr_23.jpg

The Last Guardian

We'll have been waiting for it approximately ten years when it eventually arrives, but wherever Fumito Ueda's involved, you know that it's worth the pain. ICO was originally intended for release on the PSone, but the ever-young animator refused to compromise his vision and switched development to the PS2. The exact same scenario is repeating with The Last Guardian, and we expect the results to be similarly memorable.

2016_fea_scr_24.jpg

The Witness

Announced at the PS4 reveal party and delayed more times than we can count, The Witness is Jonathan Blow's first game since breakout hit Braid – which debuted all the way back in 2008. A first-person puzzle title which is guaranteed to harbour more secrets than we care to imagine, this vibrant open world adventure looks and sounds fascinating.

2016_fea_scr_25.jpg

Tom Clancy's The Division

It was Ubisoft's customary conference closer at E3 2013, but hype for Tom Clancy's The Division has been dwindling ever since. A third-person shooter set in a post-pandemic New York, there's some cultural commentary going on with this Christmassy escapade. The French publisher will need to work hard to recapture the positive response that the original demo received, but it'll be a special game if the final product can live up to its reveal.

2016_fea_scr_26.jpg

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is the big one, isn't it? Certainly from a commercial sense, Nathan Drake's swansong is shaping up to be the best selling entry in the series. And from what we've seen of the game, it'll earn every unit that it moves – after all, that highway chase sequence is in a different league to practically every other video game set piece.

Do you agree that 2016's looking like the PS4's biggest year yet? Which of the above games are tickling your fancy – and which could you live without? Collect your ticket for the hype train in the comments section below.
