Seeing as there are no weeaboos in the office today, it seems like it's down to yours truly to follow-up on last night's Final Fantasy XV stream. During it, the developer touched upon a ton of new details – the types of magic that will be featured in the game, for example – but the meat of the broadcast centred on a new three minute gameplay trailer showing Noctis and crew infiltrating the Niflheim Empire.
And it looks, well, kinda rad. The clip starts out slowly with some stealth, but the figurative excrement soon hits the fan, as the game's main crew are shown dismantling dozens of armoured officers. The actual sword swinging action reminds us ever so slightly of God of War, with the protagonist moving in slow motion as he launches enemies into the air, and warps himself towards them.
One really cool touch is that you'll be able to rope your allies into the action using commands, and the camera will switch over to their point-of-view as they unleash their attack. This, alongside the ability to change weapons on the fly using the d-pad, gives the combat a frenetic quality which looks very exciting in this clip. There's some uber-powerful magic on display, too – look out for the incendiary spell.
Promising signs, then. The combat's looking fast and fluid, the visuals are stunning, and the art direction's – well, that was never really a concern, was it? We'll finally be getting a release date announcement towards the end of March, so let's hope Square Enix can use that and this new footage to kick-start some enthusiasm in the game, because it had been starting to flatline of late.

The best we've ever seen it. Was sort of glad I stayed up until 5AM to watch it. Sort of.
loving the changes to the battle system and the new UI
Nice. I just want to get stuck into it to be honest. It's easy to make snap judgments about the characters/systems etc but I'm hopeful it'll all come together after several hours
@ShogunRok
A shame it was all spoiled at the TGS though! But it wasn't dissapointing like it normally is and I even feel that what they've shown indeed deserves the use of the word 'rad' in this article's title
This game makes me feel like how I felt when they were showing MGSV: I couldn't believe that a game could actually incorporate all of the things they were promising, which it eventually did. This just seems too good somehow! I can not see our PS4s not buckling under the graphical pressure of the magic spells, nor can I imagine playing a game with the scale they're promising; if this indeed turns out to be the game they're promising it to be, Squeenix single handedly invented the term 'Quadruple A gaming'.
Dat warp skill!
This seriously just made my day.... Couldn't be any more hyped right now that trailer was the business
Looks like it's come a long way since the demo and the battle system seems to be much improved. This has definitely moved back into the top 3 or 4 games that I'm looking forward to
just wow! And that music is amazing.
Now I want to like Noctis more...
I don't care if the game ends up being terrible (which I really doubt it will), the soundtrack alone is probably worth $60.
Ever since the TGS 2014 trailer I've been getting a pretty big Xenoblade vibe from this game, and that gameplay is no exception. I don't think I've ever been this excited for a game since the reveal of Skyward Sword. Can't wait.
@Feena I myself actually do like Noctis even more now.
Also, does anyone here think that he's probably the most powerful protagonist in the franchise so far?
Wow, looks like they could release it today with that amount of polish! Slowly my fears for this game are subsiding and the hype train is starting to warm up! Now I am sure it will be released on 12/31/16, take that 2016 release date!
Glad to see it looking so well. This is definitely on my top games to play for this year.
Looks damn good. I think this game just popped into my radar. Hopefully it's late 2016. Less games on my radar then haha (just Pokemon Z and Zelda Wii U).
I'm gonna say the combat looks alot of fun, but there was nothing interesting about that level to me. In fairness, all I've seen is that small portion of the level, but I really hope the level design is better for the rest of the game.
@KorvisKhan dunno I thought it was quite nice to see a new environment, been a bit tired of the same green field
@WanderingBullet Mmm he certainly looks powerful, Terra from VI was also portrayed as pretty OP.
@kyleforrester87 I haven't heard anything about how big the world is yet. I can't help wondering how it would compare in size to a game like Witcher 3, which was like 130 square kilometers (so far the largest game world created).
@KorvisKhan yeah, can't say size is hugely important for me - I like the fact the old final fantasies, type0, bravely default etc all exist in large worlds that you can cross in half a minute on an airship. My main concern with FF15 is it'll be a bit too much like Far Cry or something in terms of its map. We'll see though!
@IceClimbers When FFXV releases before Zelda U Nintendo may as well throw Zelda U on the scrap heap. I don't see Zelda U in 2016, whatever they finally call it, or whatever system they finally release it on. Though if NX is a handheld it's more likely Zelda U on Wii U, not sure any Nitnod made handheld would be able to handle that much open world.
That is one very dark video, could hardly see a thing. If this was one of the first videos I'd have almost no interest in this game, not a huge stealth fan, and it's so dark.
Watching Noctis move around like Cole in inFamous made me happy though, that blue trailing glow was very cool.
But hwy have this last night and not announce the release date then, why announce a release date will be announced on March 30th? Still not happy about that.
I kind of have a pet peeve rule - using a year as a release date for a game is fine - when it is a year or 2 away. Using it at E3 is fine, what you are really saying is is that the game will not be out that year. But once you get into a year - January 2016 is what we are in now - you can no longer use the year as a date. It makes no sense, 1/12 of 2016 is already over. And we know the game isn't coming out without at least a few weeks notice, so we know it isn't coming out in Feb either. So don't say "2016" when you are in "2016" b/c if you know it is coming out in the next 11 months then you must have a better idea than that, if not the month then at least the season, or holiday. Nobody should ever use "year" as a release time frame when you are already in that year.
@rjejr I'm pretty confident Zelda will release this year. The lack of info isn't enough to say otherwise when Fallout 4 happened - it was announced and released in the same year, with little info in between.
Yes! Looking good! I'm excited.
@IceClimbers They also showed a lot more of Fallout 4 when they announced it. And more after that. How much have you seen of Zelda U? How much in all of 2015? It could happen, but if I were betting I'd have to bet against it.
@kyleforrester87 What I'm saying is if the world is big then hopefully this video doesn't reflect on the rest of the game's level design. I just hope we see something better than that bland looking warehouse. 👆
I'd say it looks like a very generic action game. I'm more looking forward to World Of FF.
@KorvisKhan ah. Well they've shown plenty of outdoorsy environments too so shouldn't be a problem for you. As I said, for me, it's been nice to see some indoors stuff for once
wow looks awesome cant wait
Woah...
I haven't felt this much hype for a Final Fantasy game in 10-15 years. It's like reliving the days of the FFX release all over again....
@Feena Yeah, a lot of people seemed to think she's probably one the most powerful protagonist in the series.
But the amount of things Noctis can do from the footages shown so far is kinda insane. Guess we'll know once the game releases.
Looks great but why is this even called Final Fantasy? :-/
If they wanted to put the name in there for marketing reasons, they should have gone with Final Fantasy Revengeance, at least that would have made a bit more sense.
@meppi Final Fantasy started getting ropey and confusing once they moved away from the standard numbering, I'd prefer they stick to 15, 16, 17 and so on from now on!
Looks fine but still way more interested in the VII remake than this one.
The hype is real. I can't wait to play this.
Looks good, but seriously, at this point they should just name it "Final", because I'm not seeing the fantasy.
At the end there... was that... Metal Gear?!
