Stitch up your sides and prepare yourself for a rib splitting adventure, as Sony has finally announced that Ratchet & Clank will release on 20th April in Europe – a little while after its pre-confirmed 12th April launch in North America. For some reason, France will get it on 15th April – we assume purely to make our lives that little bit more complicated.
"The first instalment of Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 4 will tell a new version of the origin story that many of you will remember," community lead James Stevenson wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "It features modern Ratchet & Clank controls, new planets, new and improved gameplay, all-new boss fights, new flight sequences, and much, much more."

I can't wait. This generation needs a new Ratchet and Clank, hopefully its as good as Future Tools of Destruction or Crack in Time.
@thedevilsjester The demo we played at EGX was very promising.
@thedevilsjester Same. My only worry is the game getting swept up in Uncharted 4's hype.
@DerMeister It will. Poor planning by Sony.
@get2sammyb @DerMeister I think most true PS4 fans are going to buy both (games like these are one of the reasons we choose Playstation...right?), though it would be nice to separate them, just so I have time to appreciate them without rushing.
@thedevilsjester Agreed. Dark Souls III is right slap bang in the same period, too.
@get2sammyb I know
@thedevilsjester I definitely agree. I'm just kinda sad about it, because it's my favorite series, and with this and the movie, I feel like it would a waste to see R&C die in sales hell.
April 19 is my birthday - maybe if preorders come a day early maybe this should be my pre-birthday gift to myself?
Awesome, can't wait for this! April is going to be expensive though!
One the games I'm looking forward to most this year...! Played some at EGX and it was brilliant.
And whilst I see people’s concern over this being released close to Uncharted…I’m not sure it will make that big an impact on sales. Out of all my friends, nobody is buying Uncharted but a fair few are buying R&C day one. We can’t be the only ones like this and I imagine there are lots of people who will buy both.
@Quintumply You can say that again! DiRT Rally, Ratchet & Clank, Dark Souls III, Uncharted 4 - I want all of them!
@mrobinson91 I'll be getting both, though I will likely wait a bit on Uncharted 4, until I have platinumed Ratchet & Clank. Everyone in my family, my kids, me, my wife, we all love Ratchet & Clank so its going to get much, much more play time than Uncharted 4 will.
Poor Ratchet & Clank. And people over on Nintendo Life claim Nintendo is the only one who poorly plans and selectively advertises their games. How foolish of them.
Gutted that this is coming out around the same time as Dark Souls III. Going by, well, every Souls game ever, I'm going to be playing that solidly for at least a couple of months. Will definitely get Ratchet & Clank afterwards though - really looking forward to it!
@get2sammyb To be far to SCE I don't think they have much of a choice, they will want to cash in on the movie but Sony Pictures want it out before may because Marvel usually drop one of there films then. So April was probably the best month because it's far enough away from Star Wars and before Marvel. And with the game been a half price I don't think Sony expect much from it anyway (from sales rather then quality)
@adf86 @Neolit I'm sure it'll be fine, but it did seem like a good opportunity to "reboot" the series and put the spotlight back on it. Uncharted and Dark Souls are going to hog the limelight now, though.
You're quite right, though - slightly different audience for this.
@thedevilsjester Yep agree. We also need a Sly for this gen too!
The games being a week apart may not hurt sales of R&C too much, but I think if U4 was 2 months later then R&C may have had it's own PS4 bundle, but I can't imagine them putting out 2 different hardware bundles a week apart. And not just Sony, but in store marketing will be all about U4 as well. At least R&C has 2 weeks in the US. That may be enough time for PS4 owners to spend the $40 ahead of U4.
I'm still waiting on FFXV and bundle news before I buy a PS4. Plenty of time yet to make that decision.
Not sure it will get lost in the hype of Uncharted as you have a movie so everyone is going to be talking about the characters. Also the game is totally different. If they were the same genre it might be an issue.
Uncharted, Ratchet, Dark Souls 3 and possibly FF15 launching within 3 months of each other. Wow. 2016 will be amazing.
I understand they want it to coincide with the movie, but why not release it in January or February and give it another marketing push when the movie's out? The game is said to be ready for months now and they're just waiting for the movie to come out. Maybe they should've pushed Uncharted further back to September, cause although one might argue both are totally different games, people can only spend their money once. This game can sell on nostalgia alone, but Dark Souls 3 and a new Uncharted will beat nostalgia any day of the week.
@Boerewors I disagree. Ratchet & Clank's latest release was Nov 2013 (about 2 years ago), and they had quite a few original releases on the PS3 (6 original titles for the PS3 not counting the HD collection), where as Uncharted has only had 3 games, with the latest releasing a little over 4 years ago (Nov 2011). How could you classify it as a nostalgia buy?
Although I am definitely getting both, if I had to choose one, it would be R&C hands down. A game that everyone in my family can play and enjoy, vs one that only I would play.
@thedevilsjester
It's essentially a remake of the first R&C, but it'll be a nostalgia based purchase for me not so much because of the game, but because of the genre it's in. It's like you said the kind of good ol' family fun that brings me back to the days of Spyro, Crash and Banjoo Kazooie. We had the 2d sprite based revival, now we're seeing a comeback of the 3D platformer. A franchise doesn't have to be old to bring a feeling of nostalgia; when I play Shovel Knight it's like I'm 10 years old again!
The 20th-25th are a little busy.
Star Fox Zero, UC4, and now this are all in that same few days. I don't think Dark Souls III has an EU date yet and it'll probably end up there too.
@Boerewors Its not a remake in any way shape or form. Its a reboot. Its a completely new game from the ground up. Its not the same story, not the same levels, and not the same weapons or mechanics (other than the basic R&C game mechanics that all R&C games have). The only thing it shares with the first R&C is that its an origin story. Nothing else.
To put this in perspective, see more recent reboots like Tomb Raider (2013), which in no way resembles the original Tomb Raider game from 1996.
@Boerewors @thedevilsjester It's actually a mix of both. The devs call it a "reimagining". It's going to have some of the same levels (Such as Gaspar and Pokitaru), but they may not be the same as before, or just expanded. The weapons have a mix of new stuff and what's been in previous games.
It's not going to be totally the same, but not vastly different either. One such example is the Snagglebeast battle happening in different circumstances.
@thedevilsjester Yeah, it's going to retain some elements, but for example I really doubt James Arnold Taylor's boy scout Ratchet will end up hating Clank for a good third of the game like Mikey Kelley's in the first game.
And neither approach is necessarily worse, but at the time it was cool to see a buddy platformer where the buddies hated each other.
@thedevilsjester
Is it me or do I detect some hostility? I had the privilege of playing the game twice already and I'm 100% positive that I played those levels before. Reboot, remake... That wasn't the point I'm making. First you want to prove me wrong on the nostalgia bit and now I say remake instead of reboot... Who gives a F, that's not what we're discussing here. Launching this game a week before UC4 is just plain silly... Whether it's a reboot or remake or nostalgia driven or a completely new genre.
@get2sammyb @Quintumply
Naughty Dog can't get its sh*t together, Uncharted 4 won't hit until June at the earliest. Which is whatever anyway. I was more p*ssed when it got delayed because that April 27 release date would mean Ratchet & Clank gets buried. If ND somehow gets its act together and Uncharted is ready for April, then this is p*ss poor franchise management and it doesn't surprise me that the relationship between Sony and Insomniac isn't what it used to be.
@Gamer83 Better the companies take their time to polish the games than rush out a turd fest don't you think? Screaming like a spoiled brat only gets 'spit in burgers' if you catch my drift - check out Super Troopers movie for meaning!. I'm psyched for R&C! Can't wait to see movie in cinemas too ^_^
@Boerewors I guess you have a masters degree in business? Have you worked in sales before? Why don't you get a job with them and prove them wrong Your thinking could bring so much joy and huge profits to the hard workers in the industry.
@bbq_boy
Ouch... The SDF thinks it's personal! These things are called "discussion boards" for a reason; we discuss games, the industry, devs, publishers and whatnot. We react to news or share experiences and tell others how we feel... No need to act like that, I wasn't attacking anyone, I was just giving my opinion, about a round disc of hardened TFP you put in an angled box shaped piece of plastic...
@Gamer83 i think their relationship was bad before this happended. Sunset overdrive was the nail in the coffin. That game looks awesome and should have sold a lot better.
@Sanquin Please watch the language -Tasuki-
Holy Cannoli! My two favourite franchises releasing within 9 days of each other! Definitely going to be doing an R&C and Uncharted 4 marathon run ;D
I'm not really fussed about R&C i'll be getting DS3 and probably Uncharted, I don't think I count though i'm ex Xbox will probably pick this up on the cheap though.
Love, love, LOVE the Ratchet & Clank series.
Will get the game, and also watch the movie with my then 9 year old daughter.....
I will buy all 3 games no problem I want to see the reboot happen.
Now this is one of the select games that tempts me to forget about my PS3's backlog and waste money on a PS4, but I think I can wait.
@Boerewors no hostility but it's not a remake. It's going to have a little bit of the existing areas in the same universe from the first game, it only make sense, but not only is all of that "existing" content newly designed but the majority of the game is going to be new content, new worlds, new game mechanics, and a reimagined story. That hardly qualifies as a reboot or a nostalgia purchase. They already did an HD remake of the first game, that's not this.
@Boerewors I found a good video, an interview with the developers (the production director to be specific), where he states that its going to be a completely new game based on elements from the PS2 version. Looking at the video that accompanies the interview shows this really well, and they address the concerns that its just going to be an HD remake.

I came across this video recently and remembered the conversation, thought you might like to watch it.
A good quote: "Almost everything in this game is new"
