It takes a brave company to ditch its own service and replace it with a competitor's, but Sony's been daring virtually all generation. We all knew that binning Qriocity – or whatever it was called – in favour of Spotify was a darn good idea, but corporations can be proud entities, and we doubt that many of you would have bet on the Japanese giant actually doing it. Fortunately, it did.
And 11 million downloads later, PlayStation Music featuring Spotify – as it's awkwardly named – remains arguably the best app on the PlayStation 4. To be honest, it's crazy to think that while the PlayStation 3 famously didn't feature any universal background audio features, the PS4 allows you to stream from a catalogue of millions of songs on-demand – for free, as well.
Sadly, it turns out that while the PlayStation community has racked up a whopping 190 million hours of listening, our collective tastes aren't very good. We've included the most streamed songs from 2015 below, but before you gag over that, we'll point out that FIFA 15, NBA 2K16, and Destiny were the most played games in conjunction with the app. So, here's what everyone was listening to:
- 679 (feat. Remy Boyz) — Fetty Wap
- Know Yourself — Drake
- Nasty Freestyle — T-Wayne
- See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth) — Wiz Khalifa
- Hotline Bling — Drake
- Trap Queen — Fetty Wap
- Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae) — Silentó
- Post to Be (feat. Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko) — Omarion
- B**** Better Have My Money — Rihanna
- The Hills — The Weeknd
We'll now present to you Push Square Towers' most streamed songs of 2015:
- All Night Long (All Night) — Lionel Ritchie
- Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! — Vengaboys
- The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) — The Cheeky Girls
- C'est La Vie — B*Witched
- Cotton Eye Joe — Rednex
- Agadoo — Black Lace
- The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) — Cher
- Gangster's Paradise — Coolio
- S Club Party — S Club 7
- The Ketchup Song (Asereje) — Las Ketchup
At least some PlayStation owners have taste, eh?

Push square towers play list is sublime...
DISCLAIMER:
No one in the Push Square office uses Spotify besides @get2sammyb. And it shows.
No Ariana Grande and One Direction?
Not sure which is worse. The top playlist, or yours..
The only game that I use in conjunction with Spotify is Rocket League, and then it's a bunch of 80's and 90's metal like Metallica Megadeth, GNR, AC/DC, Ozzy etc.
@ShogunRok Whatever, I've seen your secret CD collection.
Don't worry - I won't tell anyone!
I think everyone there should follow @Tasuki and learn a thing or two for good music!
Not my choice in music, but I don't disrespect any ones opinion, it's why it's an opinion. Lol. But a factual debate, Is another story.
I could've sworn that Wiz Khalifa, Fetty Wap and Omarion were all background characters in the original Star Wars trilogy.
@Tasuki
I also throw it on for Driveclub, I'll have to try it for Rocket League though....
Well, it's a pretty poor list overall, but it beats Taylor Swift.
"PS4 Owners Have Terrabad Music Taste". Sees Cotton Eye Joe and Ketchup song. Uh huh.
I guess the T-Swift void needed to be filled somehow.
Its the taste of people who stream music that is the problem not PS4 users.
No Steps? For shame!
Fetty wap sounds like a masturbation technique. :-/ No idea who any of the user ones are apart from Rihanna.
@ShogunRok I'm not sure if I believe you, there's no Taylor Swift on that list.
I think I've only used the Spotify app in conjunction with a game once. The game was Rocket League, and the music was big band swing/jazz.
It was pretty amazing, actually.
@Jaz007 Taylor Swift's not on Spotify.
Awesome, I have no idea about any of that top 10...
I'm still trying to find the right (non-swear) word for Pushsquare's list. Although Lionel Rich-tea is at least at number one, a guilty pleasure surely.
My guilty pleasure when gaming is Santa Esmarelda. They do a fantastically over the top, disco funk cover of House Of The Rising Sun at fifteen minutes long.
@get2sammyb no, but she is always in my heart.
I'm not even kidding. I liked her last album.
I've only streamed music a couple of times, I had a few mates round and we were playing Injustice with Mayhem, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Ulver on.
Second time was putting the xmas tree up a few weeks ago so some Christmas cheese and nineties pop was called for
@get2sammyb I have to say that list from PushSquare Towers is pretty epic, just needs some Backstreet Boys and it'll be perfect 😉😆
Barry Better Have My Money is one of my favourite Rihanna tunes.
"PlayStation 3 famously didn't feature any universal background audio features"
alot of games actually allowed you to do it...infact it was better as it would turn all in-game music off and keep the volume relevant to what's going on in the game.
Haha love the PushSquare list! lolz
You guys are too cool!
I tried to listen to enough Floyd, Bowie, Elliott Smith, Morrissey/Smiths, and more recently, Beatles to make up for the terrible tastes of the masses, but it appears I've failed miserably. Such is life! Hahaha
@viciousarcanum Sure, but everyone always wanted the feature to be implemented at OS level rather than on a game-by-game basis, which is what I mean.
All I can say is if those lists define a PS4 owner, then I will have to sell my console!!!
Never used Spotify, and if the unknowns in that top 10 are anything to to judge content on, I probably never will.
That PushSquare top 10 though... I could listen to that.
Vengaboys and B*Witched! Alright!
Been using the app to listen to the Star Wars soundtracks while playing Battlefront because the game doesn't use the music enough. Also who would have thought Bloodborne and Queen go well together?
wow i cant believe how much musical taste i have in common with everyone. heres what you might find on my mp3 player on any given day. surely these are some favorites of many of you too!
xenomorphic contamination - deeds of flesh - blotted science - absu - de profundis - obscura - diamanda galas - first fragment - angelcorpse - vintersorg - gorevent - archspire - kate bush - phobia - and of course tiny tim (im not kidding)
so as you can see, we are one in the same.
this is why i dont use horrible "music" apps
I absolutely love the Spotify app. My most played has to be blur and the cribs
@Mergatro1d I agree. Hated it at first but it sounds ace after a few beers, same with Wrecking Ball by Mill Cyren
@Gmork___ that's a pretty sweet list! Have you heard of an Australian band called Spire? Their EP, Metamorph, is superb. Dense, black, evil. Sounds like halfway between ambient doom, traditional black metal and drone. Really good and the vinyl set is awesome.
nearly all my music is classical (for which i always get taken the mickey out of for)
kind of partial to andre rieu's version of beautiful blue danube myself
oh and any version of Ode to Joy
I love your playlist! campy/fun
@mookysam XD it really does, but I never heard of him myself so i know how you feel. Lol
@adf86 great idea! I'll have to do that. Lol
I like C'est La Vie by B*witches.....
@Johnnycide no i havent heard of spire but ill check em out. have you heard of the schoenberg automaton? they were from australia but relocated to vancouver canada which is right beside where i live! i am a show promoter and they are playing my show this feb with my band Terminal Sequence.
@FullbringIchigo rachmaninoff is BY FAR my favorite classical composer. prelude in c sharp minor!! COME ON!!!!?!?!?! most intense song ever written. i heard he hated that that piece is what he was known by
@Hego Me to you should look up Eiffel 65 Blue Da ba Dee and this http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hYdvpoRhQMo
@Gmork___ nice! I'll be sure to check out both. Canadians have some pretty sweet taste in music from what I've seen. Known a few and they seem to be as passionate about bands as us Brits.
That and Metric. My girlfriend loves them, seen them live twice now and though they're not my thing, they're awesome live.
@Gmork___ yes that is an intense piece
intense and a little sad, at least to me
Dang. So we're disrespecting entire communities now? Stay classy pushsquare. 😔
Most of the music I listen to if not all its electronic/progressive house I'm not a fan of rap and heavy metal as most people are these days
Ill ignore the pushsquare list because its not very good but the top ten is full of dope songs that were super catchy over 2015 so like ✋ no hate
Was really happy when they added spotify, we use it almost daily. Works great with my sound bar and fallout running. Granted the most popular songs are not usually my cup of tea but I don't mind checking out what the youngins are listening to these days once in awhile.
The list... my god...people actually listen to that "music"? I listen to metal, metal of all kinds. Metal makes everything in life better, and more brutal. In the best way.
I don t care about general trend.... Since mainsyream now is all about rap and co..... But spotify on ps4 has been a great way to discover new artists through amazing playlists. One of the best console's feature for me so far....
I only like rock and punk so that list looks horrific in my eyes, though I do like the rap music in the Tony Hawk games.
What's really sad is that almost all of the top 40 in the US is pretty much from one genre. And that genre is really only popular in the US. It's baffling when rock superstars of 2015 like Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch and even newcomers like Royal Blood and The Pretty Reckless are nowhere on these lists, despite having mammoth openings on the charts. Even my favorite metal band Bullet for My Valentine is relatively unheard of in the US, despite having their new cd this year opening at #1 everywhere else in the world.
I find it crazy people buy consoles to play music/films & TV on, for me a games console is for playing games on I wouldn't dream of watching films on it. I also find it ironic people ripped into Microsoft over its TV stuff on the XboxOne, when people where watching Netflix on the 360 more then they where playing games.
I don't know any of the songs on that top list, but from their titles and, uh, "artists," I'm pretty sure I'm dodging about 10 bullets here. All Matrix-style and everything.
The Pushsquare playlist sucks. I agree with the most streamed songs
@banacheck the thing about this is thou people are playing the music and playing the games at the same time
@Gmork___ had a look at both and Sxhoenberg are a beast!!!! Proper old skool 90s death metal with nice bass end. My gf hates it. I'd love to hear some Terminal Sequence other than YouTube. Sounds great, but really needs some proper recording.
@Paranoimia So you don't know Drake
@banacheck The true last dedicated game console was the Gamecube after that they all sort have become digital media boxes more then anything else.
@Melucine Yes, yes they should
@sub12 I haven't tried it for Driveclub might the next time I play it. I might throw together a play list for Blops 3 though.
@XFsWorld I've heard of Drake and Wiz Khalifa, but couldn't name a song from either. I know Rihanna. The rest... nope.
When you have an obsession with Taylor Swift you can't criticize others' taste is music.
tobu ftw
@get2sammyb @shogunRok that list is embarrassing. You have missed out I'm to Sexy by Right said Fred.
What the ?!?! i don't use Spotify, does it have a limited selection of songs/artists or something? Ahem, whatever gets you vibing i suppose -i don't know which list is least to my taste.
Horrendous stuff all round lads, I'll keep fighting the good fight.
I don't listen to any of that, so I guess I am off the hook.
Bob Marley while playing the Witcher.... Groovy
"Listening to Wiz Khalifa while playing FIFA" pretty much sums up 99% of the sales people in my company.
@ComicBookGuy you work with these people? Do you have a special screaming pillow in your desk which you use several times a day?
Incidentally, anyone else notice that the people who agree with the most streamed stuff don't realise the push square list is a joke?
@mookysam
Swap the first letters lol
@Johnnycide oh it's frustrating. Not only do they oversell things that I later have to rectify, but when I wanna have a casual game of Helldivers or rocket league on the office PS4s, they are ALWAYS there, shouting "oowwhhh look at that header" or whatever.
I got nothing against a few games of Fifa, but these people are the scourge of the gamer world!
Also LOL on your second point.
@Flaming_Kaiser I know it well! That song had a mini revival in my school when I was 15, we were always playing it before our exams for some reason!
@Johnnycide You say that but I can clearly picture Sammy rocking out to B*witched while playing Fallout....
Never used it in conjunction with a game
When I do use it which is admittedly rare, my top played would be atmosphere, old coldplay (parachutes album mostly), Adele (yea I know, but that voice is sublime), old chili peppers, beatles, stp, Alice n chains, eminem, and I hate to admit it but a bit of the game circa 05/06, and lil Wayne off the Carter iii. Odd mix I know, and I could throw in mumford and sons, jacks mannequin, death cab, radiohead, and snow patrol depending on the mood.
I'd use Spotify for this if it weren't for the fact that the majority of my music collection isn't available for streaming on Spotify. If the PS4 could play music without an app that would be better.
@TheMightyPunram All Night Long would sound boss on Hotline Miami. Seriously.
@BigDaddyT0101 nothing wrong with Adele mate. She's a genuine talent. I'm not exactly her demographic, but she's a phenomenal singer as well as seeming like the type of person who would be a genuine laugh to go for a pint with.
@Spyke why don't u use the meda player app?
@SKC_Diamond Exactly 10 minutes after I finally set up Spotify on PS4 the way I could deal with it I discovered the media player.
@Johnnycide @TheMightyPunram @hego
Contrary to the article, To You I Belong is my fave B*Witched track.
Vengaboys and B*Witched? Sorry, guys, yours is quite worse.
