God of War maker Sony Santa Monica is hiring in a big way for its in production PlayStation 4 exclusive game. A sponsored post on Gamasutra reveals that it's looking to add 50 people to its already sizeable team, as it moves to complete work on a project that's well into production. It's highly likely that this is Cory Barlog's game, which is expected to be some kind of God of War reboot.
The recruitment listing is mostly about studio culture and employee perks, so it's definitely aimed at developers looking for work. But if it's bulking up, it's probably safe to assume that the direction of its new project has been determined, and it's now starting the final push towards the finish line. We reckon that whatever it's working on will be officially revealed at E3 later this year.

Never been a fan of the God of War series. I was kinda hoping they'd make something new.
@WanderingBullet I am not a fan of the God of War series either so if this has the same formula/mechanics then I will be giving it a miss.
I'm hoping it isn't a god of war, but a new IP altogether.
@crazykcarter I definitely don't think it's unloved, the first 3 were absolutely brilliant and rank among the best rated trilogys ever. Not to mention God of war 3 ended on one of the best high notes I've ever seen, the perfect send off. The problem comes down to ascension, and the belief that kratos story is done (should have been after 3), and it's time to move on. I'm excited either way, I just believe 3 should have been the end for kratos story, it just ended so violently and perfectly.
@NomNom @BAMozzy @WanderingBullet Some time ago they had started work on a science fiction RPG, which I think was set in space or on another planet, but unfortunately Sony cancelled that project for whatever reason. It's a massive shame then because Sony Santa Monica is a very talented studio (whether we liked the GOW games or not, we can all appreciate how amazing they looked and played) and I would have loved to have seen what else they could do.
It can't be easy for any developer when they have to keep making the same games over and over again. They've been working on the God of War series for years. In fact they have been working on the God of War series since 2005, with a new version every few years.
God of War 2005
God of War 2 2007
God of War Chains of Olympus 2008
God of War Ghosts of Sparta 2010
God of War 3 2010
God of War Ascension 2013
And maybe God of War 4 2016
As much as those developers, Artists, Programers etc wanted to get into games development and enjoy their jobs, it can't be fun or easy working on the same IP for over a decade. How do you keep being creative when you aren't pushing yourself in new directions and creating new ideas.
Games development usually takes around 3-4 years, and possibly more when you're working with new hardware. If they release a new GOW this year or next year it doesn't leave them much time to develop a brand new IP to launch this generation. The PS4 will be 3 years old this November, so if they don't manage to release a new GOW until next year, then they will maybe have enough time left to develop a new IP before Sony move on to the PS5.
If it takes them around 3-4 years to develop a new game after releasing GOW next year, the PS4 will be between 7-8 years old by the time their next game releases. Most people (including Sony I think) have already said this generation won't last as long as the PS3 & XB360 did.
I know Sony Santa Monica can do more than God of War, Sony just needs to let them try something new.
Don't me wrong though, I actually enjoy the God of War series, but I am sick of the same Greek Mythology. If they're working on a new title in the series, I really hope it has something new. Maybe Norse Mythology or something.
Personally I like the lore and gore, its just the hack n slash, button bashing, boss battling game play I don't like. Any game that has a 'combo' count is almost certainly never going to rock my gaming world. I don't like DmC, Dante's Inferno etc either. Even if this is the 'best' example of the genre, its still a genre I don't enjoy playing.
With a few 'tweaks', from my point of view, I could see myself playing a God of War game because the 'lore' and settings are interesting and the visual presentation is good but I guess the tweaks, I would want, would disappoint 'fans' of this franchise. It certainly wouldn't be a Boss Battling, Combo counting, Button Bashing game anymore...
@crazykcarter It is widely loved the world around, just catches a lot of flak from the commenters on this site.
I hope it's a new God of War, may be set within a different mythology (Egyptian?) with a new protagonist.
Dream scenario would be to take on Kratos at the end ala Red from Pokemon Silver.
I hope it's a new IP, but it's probably not... I've never really been into God of War.
@crazykcarter They let slip last E3 they were working on a GoW game. Unless they are creating two AAA games at the same time, which I doubt, this is 100% GoW.
I finally got to play Asension this week and it reminded me how much I love the series. Totally needs a new protagonist and setting but otherwise keep feeding me GoW games.
@KratosMD The Third one i love ascension was not bad but it was just good nothing more for me.
I can't wait to see how massive the gods will be in this game!!!
I'd love a new god of war game but with a different protagonist and new set of gods. Kratos story has been told and at this point if they bring him back, it will feel forced just like Ascension did. It'd be a shame for sure for this ip to die because of the story, as the gameplay has always been top notch.
@WARDIE Did Santa Monica actually work on the psp games, though?
