As expected, Sony's just announced that PlayStation VR will launch in October for $399.99 in North America and £349.99 in the UK. The date's a little later than expected, as the platform holder previously said that it was targeting the first half of 2016, but the price is significantly lower than the competition – with both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive retailing for much higher fees. Pre-orders will open starting tonight.
The manufacturer also announced that there are over 230 developers working on the device, with more than 50 games due out during the release window. You'll be able to use the headset to play all of your PlayStation 4 games in a virtual environment – a feature that the format holder's dubbing Cinematic Mode. Finally, it announced that it's working with EA Games and Lucasfilm to create an exclusive Star Wars Battlefront game for virtual reality.

What do we think, then?
As Alan Partridge would say "Back of the net"!!!!
Hey Sammy,
That is a good price point. I was hoping for $349.99 but it's around what everyone was expecting.
Cheers!
Rob aka Graf
I'll pass.
But I'm not interested in (the gimmick that is) VR gaming.
I'm most likely in. I'd like to try it first somewhere, and see what games will be out at launch (50 in the first few months btw!), but at that pricepoint I won't need much convincing
I'm in.
@get2sammyb very excited about this. Was eagerly awaiting the all important price and I'm really happy it's not as steep as the others on offer. I'll definitely be preordering this at my local "Game" shop (UK). I'll then have until October to add funds to a gift card ready for purchase, just like I did with the ps4. Oh, and to top it off, my birthday is October 11th
@KratosMD From what I've seen so far (not a lot mind you) it seems it's a display mode, so all games and video etc.
I expected a higher price but I won't buy it on launch day. I might get it one day, right now I am still waiting for some bigger games like Resident Evil.
Stay tuned to the site tonight, guys. I got eyes-on time with an upcoming PS VR game and was very impressed. I'm technically still under embargo, though.
@GrafUlrich88 same here - either way, I'm looking forward to it. My Galaxy S5 provides entertaining VR experiences, so can't wait to see what the PSVR is capable of (I need to try out this E3)
@get2sammyb Will do!
@get2sammyb I think we know what it is now
Exactly as I expected. Now, what exactly is bundled with it? Camera? Move controller? Better question, are the move controllers required to play the games or can I just use the ds4 and it's light bar? Really don't like the waggle controllers, much rather just use my ds4. Already have a PS camera but curious if it comes with it. Also heard that psvr is getting star wars battlefront vr exclusively, that's a BIG get.
@adf86 NMS?
@SonyInfinity My next questions exactly.
@adf86 @finalstan It's a game that's already announced. Nothing to get too hyped about, but it was my second go on PS VR, and I was really impressed with it.
This tech is legit.
Having battlefront vr exclusively is probably a bigger get for the casual gamers than if they launched with NMS vr. Also the specs are pretty darn good considering how much cheaper it is then the competition.
@get2sammyb
Its $200 lower than I expected, so I'll give it that...
Well now it's just waiting to see if it will follow in PS4's footsteps or be a Vita 2.
I'm in. Already saving money for this.
@get2sammyb It's Summer Lesson, isn't it?
@get2sammyb battlefront vr?
Overall, I am impressed with Sony, now the tech needs to deliver but if what Sammy says is to be belived (and why not) it will.
Hey Sammy,
Please get more info on Star Wars Battlefront Experience, No Mans Sky, and more!!!!
Thanks for your awesome coverage!
Cheers!!!
Rob aka Graf
@DrClayman Forgot about that one!
@Sanquine Same here, actually glad it launches in occtober, gives me time to pay off my pre-order lol.
@KratosMD theatre mode basically, can play any ga,es or movies in the headset just won't have the head tracking.
Next question, are the pre-orders live yet?
@get2sammyb Oh not that one lol.
@KratosMD Yeah, I hope so anyway! Theoretically you could simulate a cinema sized screen, and couple that with some good headphones, that does sound incredible. Let's hope that's what it will end up being.
@get2sammyb Golem, Battlefront, Rigs, Crusoe, Heist, NMS, can u at least tell me if it's one of those?
Excellent price. Battlefront VR makes for a solid launch title.
On a side note, Sony just reconfirmed a 2016 release for The Last Guardian!!!
Pretty much what the majority were predicting in terms of cost and release date so no real surprise there. Having already stated I have no interest in VR - particularly at the moment or that price, I won't be considering purchasing a headset.
Still no mention on whether or not the camera will be required for head tracking.
I watched some video of Golem and that looked very clunky and slow - even seeing the person play (using Move controllers - wonder if people will need to buy those too) put me off.
£350 for the headset may seem 'reasonable' compared to Oculus and HTC's headsets but if you have to buy things like a camera, Move controllers pushes the price upwards a bit.
Can we have clarification on the cinematic mode?
I'll pre order it as soon as it becomes available to do so.
I reckon I'll bite, it's got me interested
I have no interest in VR and I surely don't want to spend about as many euros as I paid for the PS4 for something that may become the next move or something. Does anyone know if VR "works" with people that wear glasses or get dizzy easily?
@viciousarcanum Cinematic Mode lets you use your PSVR headset as a display to view the entire 16:9 PS4 menu and play all your PS4 games. Think mini movie theater on your head.
@KratosMD So Camera, Headset and Move (for certain games) controllers are required then which pushes the price up closer to the Oculus...
I'm sitting between the yes and maybe camps. £350 was the very top end of what I was expecting, and while I'm finally glad they've confirmed a theatre mode I'm slightly disheartened by the fact it's limited to only Ps4 games and Netflix only. They're just giving us bare bones there. I just hope at least they're making a loss on it at that price and that the games will sit at the same cost as current ordinary PS4 games. That said I'm finally glad to get some concrete info.
I'm in! Excellent pricepoint! I bet we'll see a PS4 slim + PSVR headset for $599 in holiday season 2017: VR FOR EVERYONE!
I've been waiting for this f*kken moment (sorry Tasuki) for over 25 years now and it's finally happening! Man, I'm so excited! I can't wait to pre order and start enjoying the road towards the release date; I just love the anticipation for huge launches like these, reading up on everything, checking your order status every day just to be sure and talking about it endlessly with friends and family.
PSVR, PSVR, PSVR!!
@blakey78 you're still buying from GAME? That's pretty risky.
@get2sammyb Cool, really need some on the ground info, enjoy!

Amazon.co.uk
I'm interested, but I still think the price is a little too much for me. Will have to see if I can afford it.
@viciousarcanum seconded!
@feral1975 there aren't many places to pre-order without paying the full price up front. Well, aside from major retailers but they tend to price things more than what they're usually advertised. At least with game I can pre-order with £20 and then add funds to a gift card. Unless I'm missing something lol, which is probably the case with me
Already got the camera so happy with that. Its the price point I was expecting so again another plus point. When I was a kid I was so excited to play the Atari 2600 it was a new experience that I had never had before which opened up my world to gaming. VR feels like another one of those moments.
Amazon and Zavvi charge on dispatch.
@get2sammyb ive been dreaming of this since i played a vr game at epcot center in the 90s.
@dryrain I thought that when you place the pre-order with Amazon, when you check out you have to pay for it, what is the protocol as I've never pre-ordered on there before?
@Sunnyviji Thanks for the heads up.
I'd like to try one to see what the fuss is about but otherwise I'll stick with my tv and pad.
Great price very affordable for me I will pre order soon.very happy so looking frwd to Wat games will eventually come out.rigs looks like a blast
Sony... Take my money!! Well done to Sony for bringing this into the market for such a good price. I really don't think people appreciate how much Sony will lose on the hardware. Granted they will make their money back on loyalties but they have been working on this for 5 years, people just want everything for nothing now days. Okay so now camera or moves included... have you never heard of Gumtree or ebay you can pick them up for £30 used. At this price Sony are really fueling the traction for VR to take off in a massive way, the next couple of years are going to be exciting times people.
@belmont A fair number of journalists have said "it's the most comfortable headset, even while wearing glasses"
I'm going to wait a couple of years to see if Sony actually supports the thing. They have a bad habit of introducing gimmicky add-ons and peripherals and then not supporting them.
Also, I'm not paying over $200 for any kind of headset unless it has some amazing killer app.
The tech will eventually drop in price.
"Maybe, I want to try it first."
Going to pre-order as soon as it pops up online. Sony hit the price point perfectly.
@Ps4all
I played one too back in the early 90's but can't remember what make it was, I was thinking about this the other day, I remember it was about £4 to play and the head set was like the size of the mellenium falcon lol
Way too expensive. And I know you can never do a direct $ to £ conversion but that's $495 in the UK! (At current rate) Mind you something you get used to as a musician.
I think they've priced it to fail personally ... Especially if you have to add on the eye and move controllers.
@Ralizah
It makes me wonder if all these add-ons have been geared towards VR as you basically need them all now to use this headset... with exception of the PSTV.. We all make mistakes lol
@blakey78 personally I hate Amazon almost as much, but considering they don't take the money out of your account until it ships, and do sneaky price drops if you pre-order really early, then I generally stick with them. Although I feel forced to get the odd exclusive with GAME if there's no option, a la Talos Principle or say a Lego special edition ( yes I'm that sad even though I never open the figure packets) I just feel despite changing hands their business model hasn't changed. Just like HMV. I don't know where you live, but where I am all the independent shops are long dead otherwise I'd support them.
I guess you need the Move Controllers and the camera as well so it's a €500.
Maybe later, I first wait for the reviews and the experiences of other gamers. Not sure what about headaches and that kind of stuff.
Boom!!! High five ✋
Not interested in the slightest
I won't touch it until it's £300, so probably a crimbo deal I think.
I am preordering this bad boy. Price was what i had expected.
@Ps4all yeah I'm the same, being a big fan of the original Elite and the Final Fantasy series I've been thinking the next big thing would be to be able to get in a ship and seemlessly go from the ground, leave the planet and land on another. And that the only thing as groundbreaking as the move from 2D to 3D would be the move to fully functioning VR.
@belmont same here. Not for me, no matter how good it is.
@Ralizah I agree, on past practice it is a big risk investing in it.
I'll be pre-ordering mine as soon as I can.
Nicest thing I can say. At least it's not 800.
@feral1975 same here unfortunately. Aside from game, you have the supermarkets, online or HMV in the more major towns and cities. I like the fact that I can put money on to a game gift card over the next few months. By doing so, I know that money can only be spent in that particular store. If I pre-order on amazon, I won't have that option. I've already got the camera and one move controller so it's just going to be the main peripheral to get
I could buy it. But I'm not going to yet.
I have no inclination to stick this on my head - if it adds nothing to the experience other than an initial wow factor. But I'm happy to be proved wrong.
@Bezzer I feel your pain, got hit by customs on a few guitar pedals, and keyboards that only sell in the states and it ended up even more than what I would have paid on the few sites that sold it in the UK.
@Slyfox30 Totally! That's why I got the camera and controller when they'd dropped in price from lack of sales.
One thing made me think, hmm I might get 1 was - 'Play standard PS4 games & videos in virtual cinema'?! That could be well cool. Good price to but not sure I will 'Jump in' yet(maybe if in the future it was smaller and didn't have wires then I might get 1) + For me I just think all those game makers making VR games could of been making normal PS4 games and making the PS4 even better. Oh well, maybe most of these VR games can come to the PS4 as normal non-VR games if this flops like MOVE/3D did
@blakey78 actually a trick I do in Amazon if I know a game is releasing near the end of the month is to pay for it by buying gift vouchers at the start. Was lucky one month and they had an offer on and got an extra £10.
@feral1975 hmm now I'm back to being indecisive again lol. Nah, if it ain't broke, don't fix it lol. I've still got my "Game virtual share" to use at some point. The next chance to convert will be October. Hopefully that's going to be roughly £100 worth of points to spend in store
@get2sammyb so does the PS VR use the dualshock 4? or only the move controllers? those move controllers are such old tech I'm a little skeptical on how well they'll work. and doesn't the dualshock 4 have the move tech already in them? I'm confused on that, but otherwise SUPER excited about the price
@get2sammyb what time are you looking to post the impressions? (GMT)
20% of people are not interested in VR, must be the same 20% that still watch black and white TV
@AhabSpampurse 1AM.
Not interested, never been interested, never will be interested in VR. That said, I hope for Sony's sake this doesn't end up like Move or Vita. The only way I can see it being a success however is if it gets something big, like God of War 4 exclusive to the device. That's why I hate these add-ons, they only serve to split the fanbase but the only way anything can be a success is if it has interesting exclusive content. Nothing Sony has, except maybe Gran Turismo, is going to push VR like God of War 4 can.
@get2sammyb late night for me then lol. Looking forward to your first impressions. You know your stuff after all I'm looking forward to a store near me having a unit for demonstration purposes. I'm already sold on buying PSVR, I still want to give it a go through. I bought a firefly headset to use with my Xperia Z3 and although some apps are OK, it hasn't exactly blown me away. PSVR for me is looking to be a top quality headset for a relatively low budget
I'd only be interested if I can play ALL my PS game's on it as the one's that i've seen being made specifically for the PSVR have give me more reason's not to buy it because they all look fantasticly poo. I would need to try it first as well because if say BF4 or COD suffered graphicaly and dont look as good as they do on my moniter then it's a big no no, also if MP doesn't run well on it that's also a big no no so lot's of hurdle's there. Impressed by the price though but it'll have to be good to make me hold off getting the Oculus for the PC which I would gladly pay £500 for.
Price seems right where it should be when you take in to account that sony themselves have come out and admit that psvr cant compare to oculus or vive. It seems pretty bad theyre not adding the camera in at least though.. as for move controllers i dont mind that theyre not included because they arent nessecary for it to work.
@blakey78 fair enough, always best to weigh it it and find what's best for you. To be fair since I'd had points saved from games boutique and GAME when they merged I was able to get free copies of Silent Hills Origins and a GTA IV walkthrough at one point.
At this price point I'm in, I'll pick the camera up sometime soon to see what else I can do with it but bring on October 😃
Sony are pulling all the right moves here. The launch titles are very solid and with SW BF they have their 'in' on the casual market. The more I think about the October release date makes perfect sense. October all the hardcores will purchase it (get a good horror game out for Halloween and for youtubers/twitch streamers), November= Black Friday weekend (throw in free PS camera+move), and then Christmas.
I personally will be getting this for Xmas. Already have the Uncharted PS4 Bundle preordered so need to spread out my expenses. Would like to know more about cinematic mode. Hope then they can add Netflix/PlayStation Vue support by the time I get it.
I literally feel like we're on the cusp of greatness.
Perfectly fair price point from Sony and more than happy to give them my hard earned cash.. Since the error of the PS3 sale price I love how Sony are now willing to take a loss are their hardware. Makes perfectly good sense for Sony not to ship with camera and move due to the amount of people that already own them and let's be honest you can pick them up on ebay now for next to nothing. Sony you're starting to become favourite company.
Ohhh can't wait, i'm off to Game this morning to put a pre order in. I do think the october date will do the NX some harm though!
I'll wait for the post-Christmas compulsive customers' regretting time to buy one of this used saving € 100.
I would love to see a Resident Evil in VR... oowwww
pre -order, Done,
HAAA haa I'm so in. The only sad thing is the wait until October.
