Love 'em or loathe 'em, Naughty Dog tends to set the visual benchmark which all other developers strive to achieve. And the forthcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief's End looks to be no different, with the title's recent behind-the-scenes including a short snippet of footage which has left message boards in a spin.
We've included the animation in GIF form above. On the surface, it's not all that outstanding: Nathan Drake leans against a wall, strokes his face, and cautiously looks around. But the attention to detail is something else: his cheeks compress as he presses his fingers against them, his bottom lip flaps down as he catches it with his hand.
It's… Mind blowing stuff – and it's made all the more impressive by the fact that Naughty Dog hand animates facial expressions. After years of wrestling with the uncanny valley, Drake looks like a real human being here. And if the rest of the game can match this level of quality, then we're in for a visual feast.

It's pretty damn amazing.
Looks super impressive!
@get2sammyb He still doesn't look dead though, more like his brother just died.
@rjejr Or he's found out Elena wants to call there first child Ellie
Uncharted games have always had incredible attention to detail and this looks to be no different. The level of detail from the moment U4 was revealed (the first time we saw Drake 'waking' up in the water, the footage of the mountain sequence, last years E3 game play of the Market, gun fight and jeep chase, the level of detail is outstanding. Even the brief sequences in the recent trailer shows incredible levels of detail although I bet most focussed in on the 'action' and not to the peripheral details.
Many times throughout the previous 'journeys', I stopped to admire the visual quality and scenery. I still maintain that U3 is the most visually stunning game ever on last gen consoles and U4 looks to be setting the same incredible standard on current gen. A standard to which many other developers will aspire to but will never be able to attain.
Naughty Dog's cut-scenes and game-play are seemless and have no discernible drop in visual quality. U4 looks almost CGi quality - well at least in these compressed internet video's - maybe will look that good in game!
Wow that is impressive. Now just gimme the game dammit!
@rjejr If that's how you look like when your brother died, you look pretty relieved. lol
I feel like he just came out of some puddle and wipes his face off of the last few drops of water. But for coming out of the nearby swimming pool, his hair looks incredibly dry.
In Naughty Dog we trust
Ok, so my guess at the ending is that at the end they will open some sort of treasure or relic that releases a load of spores into the air, infecting all those around. Cut to Texas and Joel coming home. Boom.
It gives me an unpleasant uncanny valley effect.
Just look at that left hand. It looks like Wolverine's claws in the bathroom scene in The Wolverine...almost like a cartoon hand. The face is impressive, but they still have a long way to go to cross over the Uncanny Valley.
Stunning, just stunning.
@Feena Really? It looks very real to me.
I think the biggest problem this game is going to have is that it's gameplay is too stop start. Not because of cutscenes but of people stopping to take another SHARE image.
Brilliant. Played the multiplayer beta and interested in how much the graphics will improve in the single player portion of the game. In the multiplayer, I wasn't impressed.
@get2sammyb Oh, total misunderstanding and totally my fault. It is very, very creepily real. So much that it elicited an "uncanny valley response" in me. It's the bizarre sensation we get from things that looks almost 100% human but not quite. I have to spend more time with real people and less video games/studying XD
I think it's terrifically realistic anyway!
@Neolit You've heard that one before?
That's the kind of face you make when you're in a world of trouble....
I can't believe they hand-animated that. Naughty Dog must have some of the best animators in the industry
Drool.... I am so psyched for this game. Drake seems pretty concerned here. I hope this isn't foreshadowing things to come. I'm still hoping they don't kill him off.
Graphics are amazing but the Uncharted series have always been somewhere between "great" and just "good" in my opinion. I guess it's just the Indiana Jones thing, I'm not a huge fan haha
Everything I've seen so far of this game have shown it to be by far the most visually impressive console game I've ever seen and if the game is anywhere near the quality of Uncharted 2 we're in for a treat. I've just started playing that particular game on the collection and I can't believe how good it looks on PS4 and it's still one of my favourite games
Spoiler
Is Drake Married? (only upto u2 chapter 9)
@themcnoisy
Play Uncharted 3, for an implied answer to that.
So hyped
I hear that uncharted runs at 20080P and 600FPS!!!!!!
Help me this GIF is soooooo gooood!?!?!?##$%$%#$
also lol
This game is going to be so great if it ever actually comes out.
@Punished_Boss_84 thank you. Its probably the reporter but I don't want to spoil it now I know he's married. Damn interwebs. Just upto chapter 13/14 with the train and helicopter. Thank god for tunnels haha.
It might just be me but I don't see this as particularly anything go to wild about, but then again I don't think I ever been impress with any graphics :s
Showed this to my wife and she said,"Finally they've got the actor to play Drake for the movie?"
