Sony's set to hold a big PlayStation VR presentation at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week, with launch plans likely to be made official by the manufacturer. And speaking on the latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast, president Shawn Layden has reiterated that, hinting that there's big news to come over the next week or so.
Speaking of the tech itself, the animated executive also stated that it's time for the medium to go mainstream. "It's a perfect storm now for virtual reality technology; it's a concept that's been kicking around for quite some time. I mean, some of us will remember Virtual Boy from back in the day – and a lot of different companies have had a go at VR technology. But right now we have a combination of the necessary processing power, the display technology, and we have the production technology to create a headset that's well suited for the human head."
The platform holder's presentation is scheduled for 15th March, and while there's no word on a livestream just yet, we'll be sure to bring you all of the headlines as they emerge. We'll also have some all-new eyes-on impressions with one of the peripheral's big games, which you may want to read. We can't say any more at this stage.

I really hope for Sony's sake that they get that VR support into No Man's Sky. It would be a real waste if they couldn't VR support into that game, it seems like including VR NMS support would make a lot of people who are on the fence buy it on Day 1.
@wariowarewolf No Man's Sky would be great with VR. Hopefully they implement it via a patch, or release a VR Edition
For me, it is all about price. Life aint nuthin but VR and money.
Looking forward to rigs and the London heist I just hope this isn't a flash in the pan like 3 d tele which no one watches now, or at least anyone I know. The sparks off gun fire wizzing past your eyes and many more visual effects, must surely make a more deeper, immersed gaming experience so I'm on board and will pay the launch price, hoping this will be one step closer to the vr gamers dream of
@xiofen Have you tried it?
This big VR game? It's Jumping Flash isn't it
@get2sammyb oh just give us a hint! Is it a three word title that starts with N and ends with Y??? Lol
I think VR will find it's niche following, but I do think that sections of the gaming media are over hyping VR / being mouth pieces for the companies. We have been promised the "revolution" so many times before,..........just have to see how it pans out though, I wish a company could just be happy with supporting a base console for 6-7 years without always trying to sell the newest add on or gimmick.
Don't get why they haven't confirmed if it will be livestreams or not. It's a simple yes or no question Sony.
It will be cool for about a month and then have to "move" over for the next gimmick.
@WebHead Yeah, a bit annoying they haven't confirmed that yet.
i remember this newish tech i started using back in 1998, it was called the World Wide Web, mainly used by us geeks, wasnt til many years later that it became popular, and again in 2004 i got my first touch screen phone 3 years b4 iPhone was a thing, even then touch screen phones wasn't a thing with the masses, now ppl look at u wierd if u dont have a smart phone, and the same will be with VR, it be a slow burner, will probably take 2-3 years for mainstream appeal, by then ps5/psvr2 will be on its way, with both supporting 4k/120fps, [as u already know that sony has already release a 4k phone], and will become more mainstream,
just my opinion,
@SonyInfinity Don't get too excited. Nothing crazy, but I was thoroughly impressed.
@Sunnyviji
VR has many possible and probable utilizations in areas outside of gaming.
But when it does come to gaming, I do not want to throw on a helmet, cut myself off from the outside world, and wail around with motion controls.
I just want to relax with a TV and a controller.
PSVR will likely have a niche market, but for the most part, don't believe the hype! Don't give publishers and developers the incentive to throw gimmicky crap down our throat like they did last gen.
@get2sammyb
People said the same thing in 2006, have you tried it? It's the next revolution the media said, etc, etc.
@sub12
hey thats just my opinion, and i actually enjoyed using the move controllers, was pretty awesome playing KZ3 and Resistance 3 with move, yeah and i was p**sed they didnt support it with more games, i thought it was a good piece of kit, and again just my opinion, i am all im for VR, i not one for socializing, am a bit of a recluse, solitude is my friend,

@sub12 Soz, Nostradamus.
@sub12 That might be enough for you and I, problem is the average, casual gamer, demands the new and exciting. The peripherals, and add-ons and what not, and then they scold them when it isn't exactly as they wanted. Consumers are a fickle beast, they can never be satiated and always look for the next best.
@Splat Considering there is already talk that it will also be integral part of ps5, and carry it's own brand recognition and set of games and genres, I think we can expect a little more than a month:)
@get2sammyb I have to take this response as meaning you really don't have any info on NMS VR, ohhhh how it burns my soul!
@sub12 I think he means quite literally have you tried it? As in, you can't begin to form an opinion on a piece of tech that has no comparison in the market, other than the other two headsets. Your opinion may come to pass, but everything we have read from tech journalists has told us that the experience psvr offers is almost indescribable in words, and really does trick your brain. Let yourself have fun mate, and give it a chance.
@SonyInfinity Yeah, don't know anything about PlayStation VR for No Man's Sky. I still feel like they would have announced it alongside release date if it was happening, but we'll see next week, I guess.
@get2sammyb
They probably save that announcement for E3, if it does in fact be a thing.
and sorry aboit the bad language
So long as that DanganRonpa tech demo gets made into a real game, I'm happy.
If any game deserves to virtually let the player poke around looking for clues, that's it.
I just think it's going to be a really hard sell. You can't really get a feel for it with out trying it but people aren't going to buy one just hoping for the best. I sure won't.
I'm not saying I would never buy one but no way would I with out trying it first. Which is easier said than done.
Not everyone runs a gaming site and get's a first look at stuff...
Neat!
@Splat This is definitely the biggest challenge they have. They need to get it in shops, malls, concerts, cinemas, and so on. They also need people trained to set it up properly, because a bad demo is going to put people off.
It's going to be expensive and difficult, but I do hope they can pull it off.
Even Sony has to keep making some mistakes.
Ah unfortunately Sony has actually come out and straight up said that Playstation VR is not going to be high quality in the way that oculus rift is. I mean I kind of knew that it wasn't going to be possible to be on par because of how much less powerful the ps4 is, but I still had hopes that they were somehow gonna pull off a miracle. Ah well I'm definitely still picking it up to support Sony and VR but I'm bummed about that bit of info.
I am pretty stoked though my oculus rift will be arriving in another 2 weeks. Can't freaking wait
Sure I saw something over the weekend about Bethesda looking at Fallout + VR : )
