One of the recurring features throughout the Uncharted series has been the inclusion of Doughnut Drake – a tubby interpretation of the iconic action hero unlockable in multiplayer and after completing the main campaign. The developer's opted against including the alternate character in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, however, as it feels that it's "matured beyond" the joke. "I didn't want to have a laugh at someone's expense," creative director Neil Druckmann said.
Incredibly, the developer actually went to the trouble of creating the model, before deciding to remove it. "We actually had the whole thing modelled and in there," he added. "We had a big debate about it and kind of approached it from all kinds of angles and decided that we weren't comfortable having it in our game."
We always considered the inclusion of Doughnut Drake a bit of light-hearted fun; it's ridiculous seeing someone as obviously athletic as Nate clambering around with such added weight. However, we can certainly respect the studio's decision to remove the model. And, let's be honest here, the gag's not that funny that it absolutely needs to be there.

But he's a staple of the series.
Sorry but it's more insensitive to remove him than anything, everyone found donut drake to be a laugh and a good time but ofcourse SJW's have to have their way and scare everyone from realising their visions, this industry is getting sadder by the day
@viciousarcanum Please, please, please can we not go down the "SJW" path on this site. You're free to share your feelings of disappointment on the removal of Doughnut Drake, but let's try to have the conversation as maturely as we possibly can.
I always thought 'Doughnut Drake' was in bad taste. Its one 'skin' I never used. I think part of that was because of the stress and bullying one of my twin daughters received at the time - it didn't help that her twin was very slim but I just didn't think seeing 'doughnut Drake' as being 'funny'
I liked doughnut drake shame they did not leave him as an option. Just have to stick with how a hero is supposed to look as defined by the industry
@get2sammyb Nothing wrong with what he said. The SJW movement is a real thing and it's detriment to the industry is just as real. This is a super minor thing, but it wouldn't be surprising if the reason it was cut was because they were terrified of possible outrage over a simple joke.
Again, not saying the cut actually matters, just saying it sucks that devs feel like they can't have any fun without the risk of being shredded to pieces by SJWs.
@naut Right, but let's discuss the topic at hand rather than all of the bull that's infected gamer culture in general. It's toxic and I don't want any of it to be a part of this site; we're here to discuss PlayStation, and not all of the topics that seem to go hand-in-hand with it these days.
@get2sammyb I feel like discussing why it was cut is discussing the topic at hand lol.
@naut It was cut because Naughty Dog felt they'd "matured" beyond it. They discussed it as a team and decided not to include it. No one mentioned anything to do with anyone else.
I enjoyed the Doughnut Drake character. Really added some fun to additional playthroughs. But it's their game and their call. I respect their reasons for wanting to leave it out on this occasion.
The industry is maturing and certainly has to be sensitive to many more things now it is more mainstream. Developers are making these decisions more often and I can understand why.
Pathetic, it's never a good sign if the studio has decided to take itself too seriously. I'd go as far as to say they're a bunch of d*ck heads if they think their self righteousness belongs in ludicrous fictional video games. The choice should be ours.
I get that donut drake was done with irony and not malice but I agree that ND games have matured above these kinds of jokes. It was the right call .
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Even though we played no part in the creation of it's development? Creators can do what they want with their product, after The Last of Us, Naughty Dog's reputation is on another level now which means they have tread lighter because more are watching.
I actually liked playing as Doughnut Drake in co-op multiplayer so I'm kinda sad to see him not included in the game. I'd rather they remove both the Pump and Thrust taunts as I find them distasteful.
@naut Agree, looks at Sweden and Germany
No doughnut drake = i'm not buying UC4. Kratos has a beard= i'm not buying GOW4. Jesus some fcking people!
Im not buying it now. Simple as that. Hype train derailed.
I hope they keep all the the other skins and unlocks in the game.
@adf86 half rambo half Indiana jones makes an incursion into a sovereign country, shoots hundreds in the face with no remorse and skips over their bodies to steal treasure, but chubby drake is a disgusting throw back, it's absurd.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Really mate get over yourself. Maybe you need to go play flower i hope you didn't watch the doom trailer. Ahhhh if we did the same in Europe or the US it would be ok ofcourse. Throwing a fit over something like a skin.
@Flaming_Kaiser I don't care about the game, I'm making a point about their vacuous reasoning, their video game isn't mature, nor is it designed for mature gameplay.
"Uncharted 4: A Tub's End"
@Boerewors that would be 3 as he'll sadly not be making an appearance
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
His character model was ready and I'd like to think he was in the world of UC4 at least once, filling up half the screen; his end came before the game even hit the store shelves (he probably was in a build when it should've launched though!).
Thank God that hippo Elena is still in. (Hahah, messing with the self- image of girls who read this )
@Boerewors we should all shut our pie holes and fall to our knees at the superior morality of Naughty Dog. I've only played golden abyss and I've no interest in playing the previous games, I'm genuinely disappointed that I'll miss out on the fun addition in Chubs end.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
I must say that his exclusion doesn't bother me, but the reason they're giving does. I am afraid they're taking UC in the wrong direction and making it less Indiana Jones and more The Last of Us. The way that Neil Druckman always talks about this game makes me think he's trying to force a deep and emotional narrative onto this happy- go- lucky psychopath with a death wish.
We'll see, the wait is almost over! And because it's ND it'll be getting 9+s all across the board anyway, so for Sony I think it's going to be a huge succes; their first blockbuster this gen has kept us waiting and longing for so long, that it'll outsell every other installment I think.
@get2sammyb thats why i like this site so much, Sammy. Good on you guys for just avoiding this stuff.
What's going on in here? Naughty Dog removed a feature from their game because they didn't feel comfortable about it. Moan at Naughty Dog if you're unhappy about the decision, but let's not bring in nebulous faceless factions who are unlikely to have had any influence on Naughty Dog's decision.
Uncharted 4 "A pie Arse's end"
Doesn't particularly bother me, as I haven't bought a ND game at full price since the PS1 days (Crash Bandicoot: Warped is still, far and away, my favorite game from ND) and almost never bother with the MP in their newer games, but I do have to say, this attitude of theirs is disappointing. They've "matured" past having small bits of goofy, immature humor in their games? They sound like a barrel of fun. This is what I've come to expect from Western devs in the last several years, though.
Rofl i've never really been a big fan of any Naughty Dog game's for a long while now they all seem like a one and done game but that's pretty funny, shame they felt the need to take it out. Sound's like another case of political correctness gone mad, very 21st century.
This is terrible news.
I live in Merseyside and real people here look like Doughnut Drake.
Normal Drake is some skinny git from Chester
Sad. Fat Drake was funny.
I don't play games for "maturity". I play them for a laugh.
'"I didn't want to have a laugh at someone's expense," creative director Neil Druckmann said.'
Oh, so it's OK to literally ERASE fat people from your games now?
Wow, just wow. I am so triggered I can't even.
@Boerewors Right.
And I LOVED The Last of Us. Loved it to bits.
But not every game needs to be a sombre super-serial reflection on love and loss in a world conquered by zombie mushrooms.
Games are about fun. Sounds like Naughty Dog are self-censoring in case the Offendotrons come after them, and that's just sad.
@Grawlog
I'm with you. Not everything needs mouth frothing based on a supposed or imagined ulterior motive that only ultimately serves the narrative you had in mind already. You just wind yourself up.
Naughty Dog didn't say they were removing it because people were upset. They said it's because they don't find the joke funny.
Ultimately if you don't care enough to boycott the game based on the inclusion or exclusion of an alternative skin for the main character, let's just move on and forget our troubles over a big bowl of strawberry ice cream. Or a donut.
@get2sammyb completely agree with you,let's just be grateful for naughty dog taking the time and effort to create a game which looks set to be a masterpiece.
@get2sammyb "I didn't want to have a laugh at someone's expense" is a mention of the nebulous anyone else as a factor in the decision. It's totally fair to speculate as to who that someone might have been.
Also those are sposed to be italics, how do you do those again?
I will miss him. They even altered his voice for fun's sake.
I hope they don't "mature" to the point they lose their sense of humour.
Never in my life would I see an article about Fat Drake.
I thought it was pretty funny, and this is coming from someone who has dealt with weight issues in the past (to be fair, it was more image based than being unhealthily obese). I've always seen in as a little fun in a slightly more mature game. If it was really a problem this would have been addressed much earlier, as Fat Drake been around since the first game.
It's their decision to remove it, so I'll just let it be. I'm more sad that they'll take this game too seriously, in all honesty.
@RaymanFan2 I disagree. He's saying he doesn't want to have a laugh at "overweight" people's expense. That doesn't make them "SJWs" or whatever the buzz word is this week. I doubt overweight people have contacted Naughty Dog to complain, they just don't feel it's a "gag" they should continue.
I get the impression that even making breakfast is a deep, serious moral choice for Neil Druckmann.
Someone who is so mature that they can't have a laugh at a fat joke is not mature at all.
With everything else that's being cut out of games these days, I can't say this surprised me.
Why are people bring SJWs into this it has nothing to do with them TBH they would probably get angry that hes not going to be in it now
'Kay Naughty Dog. Take your fingers out of your throats and go back to stealing some more UbiArt.
Naughty dog has become addicted to the scent of their own farts since last of us, I absolutely believe them when they declare this is a "act of maturity" rather than any sort of external intimidation.
I buy uncharted games at $30 or less any ways, I can't pretend I'm the big uncharted fan.
I don't get all the hoopla. This isn't Spielberg, they aren't replacing all the guns with Walkie Talkies and having him throw flowers instead of grenades. The creators thought that adding in the character might be misconstrued and decided against it. Their choice completely.
Let's not forget that with the improved character animations on PS4, maybe a larger Drake moved from being a fun side thing to being something that they were uncomfortable with.
@get2sammyb
If i can't play obese drake can i play with this character:D
Some of the comments here....damn you guys are messed up.
To be totally honest, I thought Doughnut Drake was always a cute addition! I just wanna pinch his chubby cheeks!~<3
I didn't even know this was a thing
