The Last of Us has arguably the greatest opening sequence of any game – but Uncharted 4: A Thief's End may better it. That's according to the personal opinion of communications director Arne Meyer, who was speaking quite candidly with PlayStation Espana as part of a recent Naughty Dog press tour.
"In my personal opinion, this is our strongest beginning, opening sequence for games since The Last of Us, which was obviously very emotional," he said. "But I think this is probably one of the best opening sequences as well. That feeling of wanting to keep playing and wanting to know where it goes continues the entire game."
All of the Uncharted games thus far have had awesome introductions, whether it be the boat shoot-out, train collapse, or bar-room brawl. How exactly the developer intends to match that sequence involving Joel and Sarah, though… Well.

The Last of Us has hands down their best opening sequence IMO. That said if we are just talking UC it's going to be hard to top UC2.
UC2's opening was, I thought, quite slow in essence. Yes ot looks great but its a bit of platforming, cut away to a the scene setting, return back to current situation to make your way through the train wreck. As a visual piece, its quite spectacular - hanging over the edge of a cliff, the wreckage and snow blizzard but from a game-play piece its quite slow compared to the pacing of other openings.
The Last of Us wasn't great either, a slow ponderous mooch around a house, an on rails drive, a sprint and then death of a character I had no attachment to in that very short opening. Granted its a child and sets up Joels 'character' but it came as no surprise.
A lot of games are relatively slow - they are either introducing us to characters or the game mechanics. Compared to some of the set pieces in Uncharted games (for example) the openings are quite mediocre and slow. Not saying that they are 'poor' but in the context of the games, they aren't the most memorable parts.
UC2 and the Last of Us are my favorite openings to video games, so I'd love for them to top that!
@Grawlog Too much of both.
I've never played Last of Us, so I dunno about that opening, but it'll be kinda hard to top Among Thieves's intro.
'The Last of Us has arguably the greatest opening sequence of any game' entirely false.
I seriously don't know how they can top the last of us opening. Its certainly one of the more emotional openings in gaming that I've experienced. Hell, just hearing from a friend how good it was (i didn't have a ps3 when it launched) put me on a last of us media blackout that lasted until the game came out on ps4. Being someone who reads a lot of gaming news going from the last of us lauch, to its remaster release without knowing what happened or anything about the game really is something I consider to be an achievement in itself. Just the fact that the game lived up to its hype as did it's opening is a statement to the games strength. Uncharted is going to have to really pull out all of its strengths to top that. We are so close, yet so far to seeing if the proof is in the pudding.
I always liked Mass Effect's opening on Eden Prime.
The Last Of Us opening was brilliant for emotion because of the quality of the acting. Whoever wasn't affected by that has a heart of stone like Olgierd Von Everec.
ND's PS3 games usually start so slow it is a hassle to replay them. In Uncharted 3 you need to beat 3 chapters before you can shoot.
And yes, all these self praising gets old.
Crash Bandicoot has the best opening xD
I don't know if I can wait one more month for this
@Plateface Care to name better?
Yea, Last of Us is going to be pretty hard to beat as an opening sequence. It gave a good sense of how quickly the virus effected everyone and the pain that ensued. The small touches like the mention of the outbreak in the newspaper in the bathroom and the news segment showing the explosion on TV as it happened in the background....all really good in placing the player in the scene. Such a great opening for a great game, and if UC4 is able to be better then it will truly be one of a kind.
@WARDIE Bioshock (and Infinite), Mass Effect 2
Quite simply it won't beat The Last Of Us opening scene! It's impossible, that's the peak of gaming immersion with great storytelling. Aslong as it gets close to that height though, it will have done well.
I thought UC3's opening was the best of the Uncharted games - cool walk into the bar and it started where the story did, shock end that makes the player want to continue.
What made The Last of US's opening so good was how quickly it engrossed me into the game. 15 minutes in and I already felt devastated by Joel's loss. No other game has ever gave me feels like so quickly.
OK, so we all know this game will be brilliant, so I don't want to read or see any more and let it surprise me a little bit!
@ApostateMage "has a heart of stone like Olgierd Von Everec" That one made me smile. Of course, I'm super excited for UC4 and can't wait for Blood & Wine.
@BAMozzy I suppose it all depends on your definition of "game" as the storytelling for me, provides all the context whether I am invested in the story and therefore the game itself. ND games have all been "playable movies."
