We bet that some of you saw this one coming. Naughty Dog's hardly put a foot wrong with Nathan Drake, the luckiest man alive and protagonist of the Uncharted series. Although Uncharted: Drake's Fortune didn't quite set the world alight when it launched back in 2007, we're not sure that anyone could have anticipated the runaway success of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - a game that, even today, is still considered to be one of the best action-adventure titles ever made.
Among Thieves was followed by Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, which, while a little more divisive than the second instalment, is still a prime slice of superb cinematic gameplay. Oh, and we can't possibly forget Vita exclusive Uncharted: Golden Abyss from Sony Bend, arguably one of the handheld's top titles.
And now, we have Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Seemingly hitting the same high notes as Among Thieves, Nate's glorious PlayStation 4 introduction may just be Naughty Dog's crowning achievement - but is it the greatest Uncharted game? In order to answer that question, we've slapped together a poll and invite you to vote for the Uncharted title that you think deserves to take home the treasure. Make your decision, and then clamber into the comments section below.
Which is the best Uncharted? (137 votes)
- Drake's Fortune is still my favourite0.7%
- You just can't top Uncharted 2
- Uncharted 3 is king
- I have to say Golden Abyss, actually
- Uncharted 4 beats them all

Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 4 are the best, and I think A Thief's End tops Among Thieves in terms of pacing, combat, and story-telling. Uncharted 2 will forever be a more important entry because it changed everything with regards to cinematic third-person shooters, but Uncharted 4 is the new king of the series.
That's hard to judge really, it's like asking if "Abbey Road is better then Sgt Pepper and The White Album".
Man that's a difficult question. If I look purely at the game-play, the visuals and level of detail, the character dynamics etc, then I would have to say Uncharted 4 wins hands down. But for sheer spectacle, the story, the scale of the set pieces then I would probably go for Uncharted 2, with Uncharted 3 a close second.
There is no denying that Uncharted 4 nails the game-play elements - the combat, the rope, the wide linearity, the vehicles, the stealth etc all help elevate the actual game-play above everything Naughty Dog had given us before (imo). Visually, there is nothing else that even comes close on console to what this delivers. The story though lacks a lot of the things that I loved from the previous 3 and nothing really lives up to the set-pieces that we had in Uncharted 2 - in particular that Train sequence. Even the puzzle elements in Uncharted 2 were on a much larger scale. I also miss the supernatural element (like the Yeti's/Guardians). Uncharted 4's story felt far more 'normal', kind of like a grown-up 'Goonies' compared to the the previous 3's more 'Indiana Jones'.
it's a hairs breadth between 2 and 4 and i really can't decide between them
can i choose both as joint best?
A Thief's End is the best for me. It used to be a toss up between 2 and 3, but 4 is my new favourite. Love it.
I always preferred 3 to 2 but not by much.
Still playing 4 so won't vote until I've seen the whole game but I'll prob go with that in the end...
4 > 3 > 2 > 1 for me.
I've played all of them. I love all of them, but UC4 is hands down the best.
I will never forget when I first booted up UC2, I was in the process of studying for my A Levels, didn't know what UC was, but that game had me from the get go.
UC4 was a brilliant experience even before I booted up the game. When I headed into GAME to pick up the bundle the staff were all dressed up (shirt half tucked in & all ). That really hyped the game up for me even more & it didn't disappoint.
The set pieces bar the E3 showing were less spectacular compared to UC2&3, but that's ok, the game in general felt more rooted in realism & it really made you care about all the characters- not just Nate, Elena & Sully.
I also enjoyed the story & puzzles far more than any of the previous games.
All this before you add the sheer beauty (& Easter eggs) of the game to the equation.
Some franchises drag out far too long, but UC4: A thiefs end is not just a fitting end, but it's an end that Nathan Drake, the face of PlayStation deserves.
It's definitely between 2 and 4... I'm giving the edge to Among Thieves, but that could change. Uncharted 3 is no slouch either in my eyes. Had UC4 had more gunfights it would have been HEADS AND SHOULDERS above the others. But UC2 is more... dynamic. Uncharted 4 is breathtaking, but the slower pace was hard to swallow at first.
@Fight_Teza_Fight spoilers, mate
@DominicanGlory my bad got carried away lol
To me 3 is better than 2, I must finish 4 before decide.
Haha who is honestly voting for Golden Abyss?!
4 > 3/2 > 1 > GA
@get2sammyb
Uncharted 2 and 4 are the best for sure, but I think 2 has the superior pacing.......4 is a bit long winded in the beginning and towards the end.
The Last of Us is better than both though.
@mrobinson91 Golden Abyss was pretty fun, at least i thought so, ESPECIALLY for a Vita game
3 is a great game with some pretty big pacing / flow issues. Colin and Greg are just trying to justify that 10, I think most people with good taste know that 2 is the better game.
@Neolit
Tomb Raider (better gameplay)
Uncharted (better characters / narative)
@FullbringIchigo Oh I'm not saying it was a bad game...but can anyone really vote it above the 4 console versions?
Uncharted 2 and 4 is the best one, followed by 3 and 1. Gameplay wise uncharted 4 is the best.
@sub12 U3 for the first half of it I thought it was better then U2 but once you get to the graveyard of ships it just jumps from set piece to set piece without a compelling plot to tie them together. The action was amazing and I've grown more fond of it overtime but it was an issue I had.
Uncharted 4 for me ahead of number 2, on a technical level it was always going to be better but both raised the bar in terms of visuals compared to the competition. Where 4 really shines is the more mature story telling, heavily influenced by TLOU team and it's here where the biggest difference is felt. Well that and balancing just the right amount of combat throughout the game whilst improving on it with the introduction in stealth. Uncharted 2 also loses a mark for the rather silly shoot the blue trees end to the game but both are magnificent games and both sit nicely in my top 10 all time
@sub12 I agree that The Last of Us is better than both. U2 has its pacing issues, too, though - the opening heist is similarly slow and there are way too many enemy waves towards the end. Still amazing, of course.
@Neolit Madness. I like Tomb Raider a lot, but it's not even in the same league as Uncharted 2 or Uncharted 4 for me.
I'm really shocked people aren't into the combat encounters in Uncharted 4. They're way better than in any other Uncharted game, and certainly more interesting than anything in Tomb Raider. But each to their own.
I still think 3 is the best. I even prefer it to 4. 4 felt like a real slog towards the end. The wide open areas that were largely empty just became tedious to comb and look for treasures. Even the combat became really repetitive for me.
It's still a tremendous game, but overall I was a little disappointed. The ending was lovely, though
Oh man, when I voted and saw that Drake's Fortune had only 2% (and less than a third of Golden Abyss' votes) I was so relieved. Drake's Fortune is lucky to be considered in the same series as the others, considering how repetitive and dated it is. It turned me off to the franchise for so long that I never got the resolve to play the sequels until now.
@get2sammyb
Think about the combat mechanics with Tomb Raider though, the melee attacks with the pick axe, the rather deep upgrade system for both your weapons, transversal methods, and hand to hand combat. From a combat viewpoint, I think Tomb Raider has more depth. I haven't played Rise yet, but I'm guessing it's just as good if not better.
The combat and shooting felt good as well.
@MadAussieBloke Odd With revisit-able areas and way more to collect than just nondescript "treasures," I would say Tomb Raider has much more replayability (for anyone who loved games like Banjo Kazooie and has to collect everything ever, anyways). I also enjoy the gunplay in TR far more than even UC4, but I think that's just because you can stealth and use the bow and it makes me feel badass
@Neolit Rubbish. He can hop over the car, take cover behind it, blind fire the sniper, sprint around the side, and climb up to the sniper. Uncharted 4 is all about spontaneous thinking and moving around the environment. I think they do a really good job of forcing you to play that way, too - it doesn't allow you to sit behind cover.
@sub12 Are we talking about the moment-to-moment action or the RPG mechanics sprinkled on top? Y'all flabbergast me, you really do. The bit where you've got to get to Sully's plane where you're sliding down hills being chased by Nadine's troops and the bit where troops surround you while you climb around the jeep lift are incredibly memorable.
I couldn't tell you about one combat sequence from Tomb Raider apart from the last one where she gets her two pistols.
Again, I really like Tomb Raider, but y'all crazy.
@TeslaChippie I don't know why but something about Tomb Raider I found a little boring. I will persist with it as the gameplay is good...but I almost feel like it shouldn't be compared to Uncharted as they are good for different reasons.
Uncharted 4 p*sses all over Rise of the tomb raider, in tomb raider you allways fight on your own, uncharted has other characters with you which make for great gameplay moments.

@get2sammyb
I remember a ton of the action scenes in TR 2013. The shanty town, after the so-called rape scene, the cavern cult scene, the plane crash scene, the tower scene, inside the boat scene, etc.
BTW Sammy, KOF 14 just received a European release date untop of its NA release. Should be a good 9 out of 10.
@JoeBlogs I don't care whether you agree or not, we are both entitled to our opinion. Part of Drakes charm for me was the wise cracking treasure hunter. The fact he didn't get the big pay-off helped drive the series onward. Always searching for that big pay day. Its not like along the way, Nate didn't have relationships, character development etc.
As I said, the first 3 have a 'similar' feel to the Indiana Jones movies - hunting some treasure that 'ultimately' Indiana Jones doesn't end up. Uncharted 4 follows more of the 'Goonies' path way - not just because of the Pirate theme but the lack of any real supernatural type element and at the end of it come out with a small bit of treasure to buy a dream - in Goonies it was their house - in U4, their business. It still meant the end of chasing the dream. As a story, I much prefer the fun a frivolity of the former games to U4's but as far as the Game-play goes, the improvements over the former games has had a positive impact.
I agree that Tomb Raider's reboot is much deeper and Rise yakes that to another level. I don't think it generally matches the set pieces of Uncharted but its going for a more RPG based experience. The 'survival' mode in Rise also adds a lot to the experience. The fact that both are 'treasure hunting, third person adventures' is why these 2 get compared but I kind of prefer Rises game-play overall but its different. Uncharted 4 is more linear and delves more into the characters, and lets not forget how much of technical visual showcase it is. I feel its more like playing a movie than a 'game'. There are certain parts which really slow up the game but wouldn't be out of place in a movie.
I didn't think much to having the other characters in a lot of the combat sequences. Times when I was going for certain trophies that were ruined by AI partners and necessitated a 'restart checkpoint/encounter' got a bit frustrating too.
I know I might sound a little harsh on Uncharted but its still a fantastic game. I just preferred the story and set-pieces that 2 delivered - even some of those in 3 were better. I know 4 had certain aspects which it did better and its still in my top 5 this generation and probably my favourite PS4 exclusive (so far). I had hoped it would have more in common with U4 (puzzles, set pieces etc) and a less 'grounded in reality' storyline.
@mrobinson91 Abyss for me is the second best after number 3. Hated the first one .
@sradmatt Interesting. Have you played U2 or U4? What was it about Golden Abyss that you preferred over the other games? I enjoyed it but found it lacked the character depth that the main games do.
@JoeBlogs well said.
@sub12
4 I'm a sucker for a happy ending 😭
4 is my new favorite. But I also love 1 & 2. I almost maybe possibly even like 1 better than 2.
3 is definitely my least favorite. It has great moments but as a whole I don't enjoy it very much.
@JoeBlogs the comments section in this article is to express your opinion - not a place to pick someone at random with a different opinion and try and justify why there opinion is 'wrong' just because if differs.
As I said I couldn't care less that you don't agree or have a different opinion - it has no impact on my opinion and certainly not going to change it, I would still respect your opinion even if different and defend your right to express that without someone at random disagreeing in a way to start an argument. Why not address your post to everyone else that has a differing opinion to you?
For a start, I never said the 'Story' itself was weaker - I said it was lacking certain elements that all 3 previous games had, which in itself changed the way 'Uncharted' feels to me. The story may have other strengths but it doesn't 'feel' like an Uncharted 'story' as much to me because of the things it lacks. The previous games were more Indiana Jones and this is more Goonies which, again to me, changes the game. Some people may prefer the 'Goonies' whilst others prefer Indiana - neither is wrong or right.
The one where you collection coke zero bubbles to keep running.
@get2sammyb
4, obvious
Before I played 4, I'd say 2. But 4 was simply amazing.
@Neolit @mrobinson91 yeah that's why i think it's inclusion in the poll was just for a laugh
I still think 2 was the best but I'm only halfway through 4 at the minute. It is up there though and close between them already. Graphically it's the best and the combat is awesome. 3 story wise was a real let down for me and to be honest I'm still not 100% sure what happened about his past and the name thing. My only gripe with 4 is the amount you have to use the "new" grappling hook it's the same with Arkham knight and the bat mobile in my opinion.
@get2sammyb I wish I was half as good as that, I just seem to fumble around and get shot.
Oh and Uncharted is much better than Tomb Raider 😉
@mrobinson91 I Have Played All The Uncharted GAMES absolutely love 2 and 3 haven't played 4 yet!
I just enjoyed it found the story interesting and loved all the puzzles integrated with the notion controls. And loved the boss sequences on it too.
@sradmatt fair play. I'm about to replay it so hopefully I'll enjoy it more 2nd time round.
4 for me, I love all games in the series but 4 blew me away.I was hooked straight away and a lot of titles I've played on ps4 have promised so much and not delivered. Naughty Dog delivered. I pray that ff15 is just as addictive.
I like how this went from a discussion about everyone's favorite Uncharted to a debate about finding similarities and differences between Uncharted and Tomb Raider.
Anyways, my favorite is definitely 4. Before it was always between 2 and 3, but 4 just takes the cake for sure.
Uncharted 4's more human and meaningful theme really nail it for me. Druckmann straley >hennig richmond.
I'm 78% through u3, after playing the previous 2 in the nd collection. U3 is the best for continual blockbuster set pieces, the main badguy is awesome and some of the panning and directing of the camera is mesmerizing. On the downside the story and scripting is a shambles. Like some B movie action film. Whereas 2 had the pacing throughout, the train section and class scripting.
My vote still goes to u3, just.
mmm 2 or 4 for the best. I think I'd like 4 better if 3 didn't happen, the revisitation of some ideas and character development in 4 feels like what they should have been in 3.
so probably 2, 4, 3, 1
2 for the story and locations. 4 for game mechanics and larger and detailed panoramas
4 > 3 > 2 > GA > 1
I had the terrible misfortune of playing 2 and 3 before the first one, so my first impression of that game was unfortunately not great. But A Thief's End was amazing from beginning to end, even better than the second one in my opinion. Never played Golden Abyss.
For right now I'm voting 2, but if I had to rank the games I'd actually have 2 and 4 on equal level. It's very tough to choose. But I also think it's the immediacy of the moment that plays a factor as well. Uncharted 2 was an awesome game that stuck with me for a long time. Same with The Last of Us. I think this question would be easier to answer a year from now after some time has passed.
@sub12
Rise of the Tomb Raider is awesome and if somebody doesn't care for the story or characters in Uncharted, I could totally understand why they'd prefer RotTR. Having played both games, I give Uncharted 4 the edge. The gameplay isn't as deep but it's still just as fun, imo, in large part due to the improved gunplay. Add in the spectacular visuals and also the story and especially the personal moments between the characters, and I'm taking the best Uncharted games (2 and 4) over the two recent Tomb Raider games.
I have enjoyed Uncharted 4 but still think Uncharted 2 is a better game. Yes graphics are better in 4 but I did not feel that wow moments like I did in 2. Also I do not feel there is a massive leap in better gameplay with 4. The sudden addition of a new character as well in 4 who was never mentioned in the other games did not impress me.I felt there was a big leap between Uncharted and Uncharted 2 but not with 4.
This is the best entry for me, pacing was perfect for the story that was being told. And game series usually don't know how to end without completely messing it up so extra points that this is the final game and it's a great ending.
And good to see there weren't too many enemy waves this time round. I really can't fault this game. 10/10 very much deserved.
