Destiny's been blasted in the past for the price of its expansions, and we fear that conversation's going to come up again in the relatively near future. Speaking during the official reveal of the shooter's next expansion, Rise of Iron, Bungie confirmed that the new content is going to set you back $30. We assume that'll translate to around £25, unless the UK gets screwed again.
The price point puts it above the title's first two expansions, The Dark Below and House of Wolves, in terms of expense, but it's not quite as costly as The Taken King, which got a retail release. According to the developer, though, this is a "big" add-on - one that adds a new Raid, new zones to explore, a new story, and new equipment.
Are you keen on the price? Stand your ground and have your say in the comments section below.
Update: Rise of Iron is now up for pre-order on the PlayStation Store, so we've got confirmed prices. It'll cost $29.99 in North America, and £24.99 in the UK.

Watched the stream, it does look good. The price is okay for me, too. Looking forward to caining Destiny for a month
I will wait to see more but $30 I guess isn't too bad...
I might get it if its not something like £30 in the UK which Wouldn't surprise me.
I'll pass, I just want a sequel at this point
@carlos82 They already announced a sequel is being made.
@Xaessya I know I just worded it poorly but that's what I'm waiting for at this point, I've squeezed as much enjoyment out of the original as I can.
In other news, some people didn't like the way Nolan north did his lines - so they hired Troy baker to replace him. They had Troy do all the lines so Destiny would seem like one seamless experience.
😂 Can you imagine if they did that?
Looks like I'll wait for another sale then.
I do not think the price is excessive it all depends how you have purchased all the different expansions. If you bought the original game and have kept buying the expanions then it becomes expensive but if you have come later to the game you could pick it all up for the price of a new release game. if you love the game then people will still pay the money. Glad its still doing well
Wow, really milking the teats dry on this one. I was dumb enough to buy TTK when my friends were "so pumped" to get back into destiny....and we all stopped playing two weeks later. Definitely passing on the MMO genre in general from now on. FPS added doesn't help make it better.
If this turns out to be a Taken King size expansion then €30 is a bargain compared to the €20 Dark Below & House of Wolves.
@Napples still, 2 weeks ain't bad for a game really! I was done with Uncharted in less i get you'd want it to last longer but people put it in the same category as the likes of WoW. I find the lore kind of interesting so just play it for the story.
@kyleforrester87 - I'm with you! I'll give it a shot!
Until they bring back Dinklage I'll wait until Destiny 2. Can't they add a sound option to choose Dinklage or North?
While were complaining about prices its really irritating to see usd currency all the time for north america. Why not specify simply usd. Prices in canada are often 10-20 dollars more for a game here. Brand new games with taxes come to 90$ CAD. Exchange rate is killing us.
Wait, didn't they say the micro transactions would be used to fund DLC? Or was that just to fund the crappy week long events? Either way, great news for people still playing Destiny, unfortunately I am no longer one of them for so many reasons.
Looking forward to this. just hope it's worth the £25
You will be locked out of multiplayer if you don't buy it. I had to buy last years expansion just to play multiplayer.
They got me twice in the past, this time it won't work.
It just ain't worth it at all.
Sad cause I love the game when it came out.
But is it just £25?
Or are you REQUIRED to own all other DLCs just to be able to play it?
I think that was the bigger issue, forced to buy things you didnt want in order to play something you did want, which was already at an absurdly high price.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya You have to own the Taken King to play it, which required Destiny and the 2 expansions to play that so you will need 'everything' that has come before it. This is an 'expansion' NOT a stand-alone game.
The Taken King can be bought for relatively little now on disc and that gives you everything to be able to buy and play the next 'expansion'.
Its NOT a sequel, its not a stand-alone item so why do you expect to be able to just buy this? You wouldn't buy one of Telltales serial games and miss out parts 2, 3 and 4 and then expect to buy part 5....
Destiny TTK has been on sale on PSN for a while now, not sure what it costs in the shops but I bet you can get it for £15. Great value really if you come into it this late.
@BAMozzy You mean like Blood and Wine is an "expansion" but theres no requirement to own Hearts of Stone?
Or that Far Harbour is an expansion but theres no requirement to own Automatron?
I understand needing the base game, but I dont understand why I must own ALL the previous add ons to play this one, its unneccessary.
The Telltales example was one of preference, because Im sure you arent REQUIRED to own the other episodes to actually play any of them.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Both 'Blood and Wine' and 'Far Harbour' are more like side quests, separate from the main game. These have no real baring on the main game in any way.
Each of Destiny's packs built onto the existing game and essentially build up on that. Its not 'typical' DLC in that respect. Some of the content re-uses content from previous expansions, areas that became available as well as building new areas. The Taken King (for example) links events from the Dark Below in its story and some of the missions use areas from the base game (expanded on) and some from the 2 previous expansions. The last 'update' also 'updated' house of wolves content to current light levels. It can't 'work' without you having that previous content. How can you go to the Reef and do the Prison of Elders if you didn't buy the House of Wolves DLC? How can you do some of the quests (like the one for Touch of Malice) if you didn't get the Dark Below and meet Eris Morn? No doubt this will use some areas that these 'Expansions' added - the Dreadnaught for example or areas opened up from Earth, Moon, Venus and/or Mars that the Expansions added and branch off from those - but if you don't have them, then the Expansion won't work! Its more like a Jigsaw where you bought the first 100 pieces, then the Expansions built around that to get more of the picture, this will add more pieces around those - without the Expansions, the new expansion can't fit on...
@Grawlog This is effectively releasing for year 3 and I guess the equivalent to the Taken King. Destiny released in Sept 2014, Taken King in Sept 2015, Rise of Iron Sept 2016...
@BAMozzy this just further reinforces my point.
Its unneccessary.
Theres no reason whatsoever, that they couldnt add the Reef as a playable area for example without House of Wolves, but lock you out from HoW specific content.
The area is already there, so theres no realistic reason why this cannot happen other than to make money.
Blood and Wine is most definitely an expansion, it adds a good 20+ hours of gameplay with an entirely new area to explore that wasnt already present.
If I dont want to play TDB but do want to play Rise of Iron, the expansion now costs £40 as Im required to buy it regardless.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya They did add the Reef as part of the expansion, but its a social hub so not really as important but it ties into the story and you wouldn't have that if you didn't buy the House of Wolves. They added other areas on to the existing areas too as part of the expansions - some of these are needed for missions/strikes in the earlier content but you go back (or through) there for later missions/strikes. If those 'areas' aren't there because you refuse to buy the DLC, then you can't go through them to get to the 'next' part of the mission. How can you do a lot of the Taken King quests if a lot of them retread areas from the previous content - its not like they can just lock out those missions/strikes/raids for example because the new missions/strikes require you to have those areas! There is NO point buying the Taken King (for example) without the 2 previous expansions, because you cannot do the majority of that content without them - including all the added characters that play a part in it. If they update/add free content (like they did with Taken King) then you would be locked out of that (maybe even break your game) because a lot of it was updating previous DLC content - strikes and Prison of Elders! The areas are NOT already there, If you only own Destiny, you can't get to the Dreadnaught, the Reef Hub, the areas beyond the 'Servitor' strike and some of those areas that 'did' exist were basic place holders before they got reworked to add the content in later! If you don't like it - don't buy it!!!!
The difference with Blood and Wine is that it is a whole separate area in its own right. It has NO ties to anything that came before it, no overlapping story, not dependent on playing the previous DLC - its a 'separate' entity
@BAMozzy "They cant just lock out missions", yes they can, many games do it.
The good old fashioned "You cannot enter x, because you dont have Y installed" for example.
They could quite easily just add the reef into Rise of Iron, as a player hub, but simply block you from all the previous missions and "story" content.
If you miss relevant story arcs thats a by product, not a game breaker.
The only reason they dont is to force you into paying more money irrelevant of whether you wish to actually play that part of the dlc, no more no less.
Essentially this is the gist simplified: "I dont care about the story or what I miss, Im only interested in the new content and do not wish to pay fir something I wont nor want to play".
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Its not that simple - how can you play a mission in an area that was added as a strike in the DLC? How can you get to point C when you didn't buy point B. How can you chat to people, get missions from them etc if you didn't complete the previous content that was linked to their appearance in the social hubs? Its not a case of greying out missions from the director as some of those areas weren't open because you didn't play the previous content and 'beat' the enemies to open up that area so to speak. The extra content/areas are linked to story arcs, missions etc. Its like starting off in Cornwall - not buying access to Devon, Somerset or Dorset and then expecting to add Wiltshire but have no access to it from Cornwall!
Its NOT a typical game were you can buy 1 DLC miss a few and buy the next - only have access to those maps/weapons etc because the content essentially all interlocks and follows on. If you haven't bought the previous content, then this isn't for you!!!
