It's not that we've spent about six months ignoring The King of Fighters XIV, it's just… Well, we've spent about six months ignoring The King of Fighters XIV. It's not like we've got anything against the legendary SNK series – this author has certainly enjoyed previous entries – but we can't shake the feeling that this new instalment looks like a free-to-play knock-off with a famous brand slapped on its cover.
That said, it's packing a whole lot more content than Street Fighter V, and while we don't expect the core combat to be anywhere near as good, the developer deserves credit for… Y'know, at least trying to offer a complete experience for fans. The trailer embedded above, which is for the Deep Silver published European release, shows off the dozens of characters and modes that will be available out of the box.
The game's due to release as a PlayStation 4 exclusive on 23rd August in North America and 26th August in Europe. And if you pre-order from either region, you'll get a steelbook case. Look, this is obviously a pretty niche game, but SNK seems to understand that – heck, the company even dropped the "Playmore" part from its name so that it's like the good old days again. It still has all of the artistic appeal of a Gameloft clone, though.
Sorry, but it does.

Way to write off the game already with obviously ignorant statements. I'm liking this site less and less... if you don't want to write about KoF just don't. The gameplay looks incredible and the graphics while bad have been improving over the months. You seem jaded and I think you need to let other more enthusiastic members of your team cover this one.
@DominicanGlory C'mon now, it's not a good looking game. Hopefully it plays better than it looks.
@get2sammyb well if you had a clue you'd see that apart from the graphics/art style the game looks really good and SNK has a proven track record of delivering in the gameplay department. You have seemingly decided to crap on it just because it's ugly. You know what other game is ugly?
Life is Strange. And you wouldn't stop gushing about it for a while last year. See how vapid your "it looks bad because stylistic choices" argument is?
The game didn't look so good at first, but it has gotten a little better over time. With 50 playable characters, some good content, and solid online play SNK could have a good game here. Maybe SNK paid attention to all the feedback Capcom has been getting with Street Fighter V. Speaking of SNK, are you guys gonna review Last Blade 2? I'd like to see what you guys think of that game.
@shonenjump86 I'd love to review it if we get a chance to. Keep an eye out!
See now this is how you do a fighter. Ya it's more of a budget game and doesn't look as pretty but 50 characters? Story mode and full single player? This is how it's done Capcom.
I was kinda iffy on it but then BestBuy accidently priced the SE at $59.99, which became $47.99 after my GCU discount, and that was too good a deal to pass up for what seems to be a very nice collector's edition.
@get2sammyb
You kinda wrote it off Sammy, if you go to sites like Shoryuken, a lot people are eagerly awaiting this. Yup, the graphics don't look the best, but both the gameplay and content look on point.
@ShogunRok
Cool, I'll definitely will.
I think KOF really makes a great alternative to anybody who likes Street Fighter, their's some differences of course, KOF is 4 buttons, SF is 6, KOF is more focused on mobility and chaining specials, in SF you have projectiles, KOF limits projectiles despite having some shoto like characters themselves. KOF fighter designs are usually more stylish and trendy (think C. Viper in SF4) vice SF, who look more like legit fighters, or somehow associated.
Anyways, I think SF and KOF are really easy to get into if you enjoy at least one of the series and your knowledge isn't just restricted to one title, like SF4 (enjoying the Alpha series or Capcom VS SNK helps). Admittedly Capcom has been on the move since SF4, and SNK has been rather poor since post 2000 (besides KOF2003, KOF11, and KOF13, as well as the PS2 remakes of 98 and 2002). But with 14, and the recent corporate change ups at SNK, it looks likes the company may regain it's spark.
Ridiculous. The game doesn't look that bad. Then again, according to this website Journey is one of the greatest games of all time.
@Utena-mobile try dead or alive
@DualWielding
Nothing against DOA, but it's a 3D fighter,.....SFV, KOF14, although in 3D, are played in a strictly old school 2D manner.
So if you want a 3D fighter, go for DOA, if you want something a bit more old school, you have SFV, KOF14, GuiltyGear Xrd/Revelator or BlazBlue: ChronoPhantasma.
@Utena-mobile
Yeah, what DualWielding said. Also there's Skullgirls and Injustice, I have those games. There's also Killer Instinct, but that's on Xbox One.
I'm very much looking forward to this. My PS4 has been practically crying for a fighting game and this and Guilty Gear Revelator will hopefully be able to fill that spot.
Its not a good looking game so it better have it where it counts in balance and control department.
@Draythedestroyer
Control and balance are not the weak points of the series, to anyone familiar with the past catalog. Control is akin to SF but with two punch / two kick, and more mobility / rolls.
For balance, even if they have 50 fighters, the vast majority of the move sets for the previous characters are of a known quantity, and not a major reshuffling. You could do some cheap stuff in KOF 99/2000 with the strikers, but 2000 was not bad, and after that they dropped the striker assist anyways.
This article has pretty much turned me off this site. It's like an opinion piece wrapped in the cloak of news. Yes it doesn't look as visually stunning as SFV but SFV looks all kinds of bland and clunky compared to the likes of Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator-.
KoF has never really been much of a looker when stacked up to the Capcom crowd but i've always found the core systems to be better and more enjoyable despite being an original SF Fan boy. I guess it's just a case of apples and oranges for some people but I firmly believe KoF 14 will be a much better game than SFV, certainly at it's launch and if SNK support 14 going forward I think Capcom will lose quite a few to the series as word gets out.
Final point of this little rant is i'd be incredibly dubious about reading a review for KoF 14 now from this site due to this obvious bias towards the series.
Poor show on this one =/
@get2sammyb @NamelessAndi
Don't take offense to it, we all love him for his contributions to this site, but good old Sammy has "questionable" tastes at best. As long as he's not the one reviewing the game, I wouldn't worry that much, but it does venture into unprofessionalism at times (I know, I know, he's trying to be edgy and not-boring).
At the end of the day opinions are like a$$holes, everybody's got one.
@sub12 I'm all for adding you're own personal touches onto articles but the way the article comes across is very much opinion over news. Also I understand this is Sammy's article but the term "we" is used on numerous occasions alluding to the site as a whole with the opinion.
Maybe i'm just extra cranky today or my SNK side is seeping out everywhere but I feel it's not getting it's fair share through this news article and that speaks volumes to me.
King of Fighters XII (PS3)
King of Fighters XIV (PS4)
I sincerely hope the game plays great, and I'm looking forward to playing it in August. Chill!
@sub12 thanks for the info when it comes to SNK/Neo Geo I've only ever played Art of Fighting and Sumurai Showdown so this series is new to me and I would like to try a new fighter so I'm hoping its good.
Ok at least we now know the reason why you keep ignoring this game. Backhand compliment article
I dont watch games, I play them and this one seems to play good. This game may be niche, and gaming media should do their part to actually promote it so it sells a bit more. This one will release in late August and still will have more content than SFV.
@get2sammyb
On the issue of graphics, your right, it's not a looker......but if you want to compare 13 to 14.......13 used a lot of the same pre-established assets and animations already created for KOF 12.
14 is aiming for a roster of 50 fighters that will be modeled in 3D for the first time, along with all the animations, and somewhere around 14 to 15 stages (again, from scratch, unlike 13)......so cut em a little slack, SNK doesn't exactly have the resources of Capcom, who went for just 18 fighters (they did a good job with that, but it's not exactly as ambitious).
@sub12 I think for me it was this direct quote which got my back up "while we don't expect the core combat to be anywhere near as good". As you've already stated the graphics won't be as good as XIII or even XII because it's a totally new system and with XII they aimed at 20 chars and expanded further with XIII.
I really enjoyed what I played of SFV initially but I was soon back playing KoF '98 & Garou because I enjoyed the systems they used much more than what V had on offer. Might be slightly more biased nowadays to SNK but bar the barren stages in KoF 14 I think it has everything going for it to recreate the glory of '98.
I have yet to get Street Fighter 5 due to no arcade mode. I'll be picking this up DAY ONE.
@NamelessAndi
Yup, I agree with you.
This looks great 3 v 3 fighting is awesome.
Does anyone remember team battles 8 v 8 from the ps1 Namco fighters. Bring them back!
Wow this looks really bad! I like the series so I hope the gameplay is intact!
